The Hiawatha treats you to 10 tunnels, including the famous 8771-foot Taft Tunnel, and 7 steel trestles – one of which is 220 feet high. Stunning scenery and grand vistas await!
The gorgeous, paved Coeur d'Alene Trail begins in the historic Silver Valley, and continues along the Coeur d'Alene River past sparkling Lake Coeur d'Alene, through rolling farmlands to Plummer.

Idaho bike trip 2018
The Mountain High Sowsport Club from Portland, Oregon, organized a 5 day trip to Idaho (with an optional 6th day), September 1 - 3, 2018. We rode our bike on 3 or 4 trails, including:
1. The Sacagawea Heritage Trail in Kennewick, WA.
2. The Route of the Hiawatha, a 15-mile dirt road through 10 train tunnels and 7 high trestles.
3. The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes (the CDA Trail) - a 72 mile paved bicycle trail across the Idaho panhandle, from the Montana border to close to the Washigton border.
4. A few of us also used the Silver Mountain gondola for uphill transportation so they could ride a mountain bike trail from the top of Silver Mountain down to the town of Kellogg, Idaho.

Independence in Idaho 2013 Skate
This was the 10th year that the Idaho skate trip has been attended by Skate Journeys instructors, staff, students, family and friends. It's in Kellogg, Idaho (about 40 miles east of Coeur d'Alene off I-90) right on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alene's. This 72-mile paved trail stretches east/west from Mullan to Plummer with great scenery and wildlife.
Typically this trip is around the 4th of July week and through the weekend. Most of us stay at the Silver Mountain Resort, but some stay at the local campgrounds.
This is an un-hosted event, but can usually be found on Meetup.com, Facebook, Skate Journeys or Skate Now. Skate as much as you like, at your own pace and at your own risk. Mostly it's a group of friends getting together for skating and hanging out. In years past we've met up with skaters from all over; Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Miami, Washington D.C. and Post Falls as well as Salt Lake City (co-hosts Skate Now), California, Tucson, Vancouver BC, Virginia among other places. Family and friends who are not skaters can join on what ever wheels they have or enjoy running on the trail or playing in the water park at the Silver Mountain Resort.
The trip is intentionally casual, but well organized. We usually coordinate shared meals for those who wish to participate.
Many thanks to Skate Journeys, Skate Now and all the organizers for making this such a great event.

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
Coeur d'Alene is the largest city and county seat of Kootenai County, Idaho, United States. It is the principal city of the Coeur d'Alene Metropolitan Statistical Area. Coeur d'Alene has the second largest metropolitan area in the state of Idaho. As of the 2010 census the population of Coeur d'Alene was 44,137. The city is located about 30 mi east of the larger Spokane, Washington. After the 2010 Census the two metropolitan areas were merged into a single Combined Statistical Area with a population of 679,989. Coeur d'Alene is the largest city in northern Idaho Panhandle. The city is situated on the north shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene, 25-mile in length. Locally, Coeur d'Alene is known as the Lake City, or simply called by its initials: CDA.
The city of Coeur d'Alene has grown significantly in recent years, in part because of a substantial increase in tourism, encouraged by several resorts in the area. Barbara Walters called the city a little slice of Heaven and included it in her list of most fascinating places to visit. On November 28, 2007, Good Morning America broadcast the city's Christmas lighting ceremony because its display is among the largest in the United States. Coeur d'Alene is a resort town, with the Coeur d'Alene Resort taking up a prominent portion of the city's downtown. It is also located near two major ski resorts, with Silver Mountain Resort to the east in Kellogg, and Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort to the north in Sandpoint.
