TravelPlanet360 - Boston Freedom Trail - Fall 2016
The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile-long (4.0 km) path through downtown Boston, Massachusetts that passes by 16 locations significant to the history of the United States. Marked largely with brick, it winds between Boston Common to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown. Stops along the trail include simple explanatory ground markers, graveyards, notable churches and buildings, and a historic naval frigate. While most of the sites are free or suggest donations, the Old South Meeting House, the Old State House, and the Paul Revere House charge admission. The Freedom Trail is overseen by the City of Boston's Freedom Trail Commission and is supported in part by grants from various nonprofits and foundations, private philanthropy, and Boston National Historical Park.
The Freedom Trail was originally conceived by local journalist William Schofield, who in 1951 suggested building a pedestrian trail to link together important local landmarks. Boston mayor John Hynes decided to put Schofield's idea into action. By 1953, 40,000 people were walking the trail annually.
What is it like to be a Boston Freedom Trail actor?
Christian Ruiz, a theater major at UMass Boston and actor for the Freedom Trail Foundation, talks about playing Revolutionary war hero and pioneering African-American Salem Poor.

The Ivy League Colleges
Eight U.S. colleges comprise the 'Ivy League' -- an elite group of private universities that enjoy a reputation for providing excellent education and attracting top students.
It is interesting to note that the term 'ivy league' originally referred not to academics but to sports. The original Ivy League brought together not minds, but football teams. That said, these eight universities have some educational and institutional traits in common beyond their athletics programs. All are long-established, highly selective private universities; all are in the Northeastern U.S.; all benefit from sizeable endowments and generous alumni financial support; all are highly selective -- and all provide need blind aid that often make them less expensive than in-state public colleges.
Is an Ivy League school right for you? If so, which one?

Green space created in New York City
This HD video shows you the final product of years of hard work to build new green space in New York City. The project is called High Line and it runs on the old train tracks above the city from Gansevoort Street to West 20th Street. The first section of the project opened on June 9, 2009. The second section, from West 20th Street to West 30th Street opened in June 2011.
According to the Friends of High Line website, The High Line was built in the 1930s, as part of a massive public-private infrastructure project called the West Side Improvement. It lifted freight traffic 30 feet in the air, removing dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan's largest industrial district. No trains have run on the High Line since 1980. Friends of the High Line, a community-based non-profit group, formed in 1999 when the historic structure was under threat of demolition. Friends of the High Line works in partnership with the City of New York to preserve and maintain the structure as an elevated public park.
In 2004, Friends of the High Line and the City of New York conducted a process to select a design team for the High Line. They selected the team of James Corner Field Operations, a landscape architecture firm, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, an architecture firm, and experts in horticulture, engineering, security, maintenance, public art, and other disciplines.
In November of 2005, The City took ownership of the High Line from CSX Transportation, Inc., (which donated the structure), and the City and CSX sign a Trail Use Agreement. Taken together, these two actions effectively preserve the High Line south of 30th Street.
Over the next four years the first section of the above ground park begins to take shape. The tracks are removed, cleaned and stored for later installation in the landscape design. The team begins to bring in dirt and install the plant material. Walkways and stairs are added for access throughout the track system. Tracks where then reinstalled into the design as the final touch. This reminds everyone that visits the High Line that you are standing on a part of New York history.
The next time you are in New York, you have to check out the High Line project and support the Friends of High Line. This project is truly something special and it will be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.
