10. Lumbini
Crowds of Buddhist pilgrims are an everyday sight in Lumbini, the traditional birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, Lord Buddha. With archeological finds that date back to around 550 B.C., the legendary site attracts scholars, scientists and curious visitors as well. It was here that Buddha’s mother, Maya Devi, gave birth near a tree in the garden, which is now a temple bearing her name.
9. Janakpur
Located in south-central Nepal on the Terai plains, Janakpur was once the capital of a millennia-old Indian kingdom known as Mithila, and the Maithili culture still thrives here. Hindus believe Janakpur is the place where Lord Ram wed Sita, also known as Janaki, and thousands of Hindus from all over the world flock to the temple of Janaki Mandir each year to celebrate the anniversary of their marriage.
8. Nagarkot
Perfect for travelers who want to experience the beauty and majesty of the Himalayas without arduous physical activity, Nagarkot is best known for the views it offers of the mountains and the Kathmandu Valley. Perched on a high ridge to the northeast of Bhaktapur, the village of around 4,500 inhabitants commands views of eight Himalayan ranges.
7. Khumbu
Each year, the determination to trek to the summit of Mt. Everest brings thousands of adventurous travelers to Khumbu, the Everest Region located in northeastern Nepal. The journey begins at the Lukla airstrip where a clear two-lane trail eventually leads hikers to Everest Base Camp. Located primarily within the Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu is home to the Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar where most expeditions to the mountainous peaks are staged.
6. Chitwan National Park
One of the best wildlife-viewing destinations in Asia, the Chitwan National Park in south-central Nepal offers needed sanctuary for rare and endangered species like the Bengal tiger and one-horned rhinoceros. The chance for a close-up look at exotic wildlife, including elephants, leopards, Indian bison, rhinoceros and sloth bears, is the park’s greatest attraction.
5. Pokhara
With its tranquil lakes, verdant shorelines and mountain views, Pokhara is a popular resort destination for travelers from around the world. Known as the gateway to the Annapurna region in northwest Nepal, the lakeside city offers respite to weary hikers, and provides opportunities for outdoor adventures too, ranging from leisurely paddle-boat rides to white-water rafting.
4. Patan
Situated across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu, Patan is as well known for its artisans as for its stunning display of Newari architecture. Built in the 17th century, the palaces, courtyards and temples of the Patan Durbar are the city’s star attractions. With its multi-columned façade and gilded spires, the recently restored stone Krishna Temple is particularly striking, as is the recently restored Sundari Chowk, a courtyard with an elaborately carved sunken bath as its centerpiece.
3. Bhaktapur
One of three ancient capitals in the Kathmandu Valley, beautifully preserved Bhaktapur experienced a fair share of damage during the 2015 earthquakes. Fortunately, most of the city’s temples and shrines, which are the main attractions in this place known as the City of Devotees, escaped unscathed. Less crowded and hectic than bustling Kathmandu,.
2. Annapurna Circuit
The Annapurna Circuit in northwest Nepal offers hikers an outdoor experience nonpareil. Showcasing the varied landscapes of the Annapurna Region, the classic trek leads travelers high into the Himalayas, across plunging gorges, over desert plateaus and through lush subtropical valleys dotted by terraced farms.
1. Kathmandu
The country’s cultural capital, Kathmandu is the place where most adventures in Nepal begin, as all flights from overseas land in the city’s airport. A crowded metropolis of more than 1 million inhabitants, Kathmandu is a chaotic mix of tourist shops, trekking agencies, hotels, restaurants, religious sites and artisan workshops.

Nepal | 2014 | Nepal Travel | Annapurna Circuit | Upper Mustang | Lo Manthang | Visit Nepal | Nepal Trek | Trekking | Himalayas | Pokhara | Kathmandu
A short video from my time in Nepal (2014). Mostly includes footage from my 17 days combined trek of the Annapurna Circuit (Thorong La Pass) and the Upper Mustang region (Lo Manthang).
Our trek began at Besisahar (Lamjung), and over the next few weeks, we trekked the classic Annapurna Circuit, via Bahundanda, Chame, Pisang, Humde, en route to Manang. From Manang, we took the side trails at Kecho/Ice Lake and Tilicho Tal (via Shree Kharkha), then continued our trek to Yak Kharkha-Thorong Phedi-High Camp, crossed the Thorong La Pass (5416 m), and to Muktinath. Pardon my expression, but Tilicho Lake is beautifully tranquil, and a must visit place.
From Muktinath, we continued north to Kagbeni, and from here onwards, we entered the restricted Upper Mustang region. The valley was closed to foreigners until 1992 and this ‘Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang' dates back over a thousand years. We continued the high desert region and tibetan influence of Upper Mustang via Chele, Ghemi, Tsarang/Charang, en route to Lo-Manthang (3840 m), and Chhoser (4 km from the Nepal-Tibet border). 2 nights were spent in Lo Manthang, a fascinating experience. Another must visit site in the region are the cave dwellings in their thousands, near Chhoser. The scale of the Zhong Caves is truly something to behold, and undoubtedly one of the world's great archaeological mysteries.
We then started our return trek to Jomsom, via Drakmar, Ghilling, Chele and Kagbeni. At Jomsom, we got some much needed shower, then continued our trek towards Marpha-Kalopani-Ghasa-Tatopani-Sikha-Chitre-Ghorepani, and the unforgettable sunrise views at Poon Hill, on our very final day. From Poon Hill and Ghorepani, we trekked (literally ran) towards Ulleri-Tikhedhunga-Birethani, then from Nayapul, took the bus towards Pokhara. How glad we were, to finally reach home.
Throughout the trek, I met so many wonderful people, made lifelong friends and visited some of the most amazing places, the film doesn’t even come close to showing the real Nepal, its beautiful people and the good times had by all. My heartfelt thanks to everyone.

Nepal Mountain Bike - This is Mustang
Nepal’s Mustang is often compared to the fabled Himalayan valley of Shangri-La. Cut off from the rest of the world on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Mustang is a high altitude desert of rich red and ocher land, deep gorges, and the world’s highest peaks set against an infinite blue sky.
Mustang is home to an endless network of ancient trails that were once used by caravans carrying salt from the Tibetan plateau to the great plains of India. In the heart of the Mustang lies the world’s deepest valley, carved by the wild waters of the Kali Gandaki river between the two giant mountains Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
Follow Rob J Heran as he explores the solitary trails of Mustang through magical villages and mystical monasteries.
