Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and surrounding areas are being evacuated due to wildfires in the Smoky Mountains. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have called evacuations as ash pours from the sky over the cities.
Tennessee Emergency Management Agency declared a Level III State of Emergency for the affected area.
TEMA said hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed as of Tuesday morning. An estimated 14,000 visitors and residents have been evacuated.
According to TEMA, four people have been hospitalized in Nashville and Knoxville with burns.
An emergency notification was issued by the Sevier County Emergency Management Agency.
The City of Gatlinburg and nearby communities are being evacuated due to wildfires. Nobody is allowed into the city at this time. If you are currently in Gatlinburg and are able to evacuate...evacuate immediately and follow any instructions from emergency officials. If you are not instructed to evacuate...please stay off the roads.
Local officials ordered mandatory evacuations for Mynatt Park, Park Vista, and Ski Mountain. Evacuations were also ordered for the north end of Pigeon Forge.
Video posted on Twitter shows the Park Vista Hotel in Gatlinburg with flames rising outside the windows. Multiple news stations in the area reported that people were trapped inside the hotel, but according to WVLT, everyone was evacuated from the building.
UK couple 'left in empty hotel' as wildfires raged in Tennessee
A British couple caught up in deadly wildfires in Tennessee have told Sky News how they woke up in an empty hotel with fires burning around them after staff allegedly forgot to let them know they were evacuating.
Adrian and Lesley Hughes said they emerged from their room at the hotel in Gatlinburg to find they were the only people left in the building.
When Mr Hughes ventured outside, a firefighter told him the town - home to about 4,000 people - had been evacuated, and that they needed to pack up their belongings and get out.
Four people have now been confirmed dead and many more are missing following the outbreak of the fires on Monday.
Elk vs. Photographer | Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Update: I've been in contact with the photographer in the above video and we would both like to issue a statement regarding the news of the National Park Service's decision to put the elk down.
My statement:
I am deeply saddened by the fate of the elk. It has certainly pulled a black cloud over this whirlwind viral video experience.
I spoke to the reporter who broke the story and she assured me the decision was based on a pattern of aggressive behavior that began prior to the incident documented in this video. The behavior was the result of visitors feeding the elk and conditioning them to seek food from humans. This video only serves as an example of the elk's dangerous behavior, not an impetus to it.
Again, it brings me great sadness to learn of this beautiful animal's demise and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding it.
I'm looking into a destination for proceeds from this video to help the NPS educate visitors on the dangers and consequences of feeding wildlife.
I also want to be clear that James, the photographer, was not complicit in a behavior that led to the elk's demise, but rather was made an example of the result of such behaviors. The elk approached him from behind, likely looking for food as he was conditioned to do.
Statement from James (the photographer):
I love and respect animals and that's why I photograph them and don't hunt them. I am deeply hurt by the loss of such a beautiful creature that in its own way bonded with me. I looked forward to watching him grow to a mature bull as the years passed.
I'm truly heartbroken to know he is gone.
Original video description:
While photographing elk at sunrise in the Cataloochee Valley of Great Smoky Mountains National Park I turned around to see what appeared to be just a curious young bull sniffing a photographer's camera. I snapped a few frames of the apparent harmless encounter.
But the elk became more interested in making trouble than simply the scent of a camera. He started physically harassing the photographer, escallating to full on head-butts.
I quickly switched the camera to video and let it roll (much of the time wondering when I should seriously consider intervening).
Most people who see this ask why the photographer seems to just take the abuse. I asked him in an email what was going through his head. This is his response:
My first thoughts were wow, he's getting pretty damn close here. But I've been up close before without incident. I hoped being still and passive would see him pass on. When he lowered his antlers to me, I wanted to keep my vitals protected and my head down. I felt that standing up would provoke him more and leave me more vulnerable to goring. I think that while protecting myself with my head down, having my head down was a signal that I was rutting with him. I was concerned at first, but when he started rearing back and lunging at me later on, I got scared and pissed off. That's when I wagged my finger at him to cut that shit out. I was relieved to see the Ranger coming.
So I guess at some point if the Ranger hadn't of pulled up, I would have had to disengage the best I could. I've joked with my friends that at least he took me for a buck and not a cow!

One year ago, today, I almost died. Here is the video of the incident.
I'm primarily posting this in an attempt to help others learn from my mistakes. This is a reminder to be safe, pay attention and KNOW THE ROAD before you try to enjoy it. I failed on all 3 of those accounts and it nearly cost me my life.
I wrote my story below, a day after the accident happened while I still remembered everything that happened. It was mainly for myself, but I decided to share it on facebook, and now here. A year later, and I have more than learned my lesson and realized my mistakes. I of course take full responsibility for my mistakes and realize it could have been worse.
Here is the full story pasted here: since YouTube's character limit unfortunately doesn't allow me to post the full thing.
Shortened story below:
Sunday, Jan 4, 2015, I received a second chance at life.
What happened? To put it simply, I was going faster than I should have been and got distracted at the one moment that required 110% focus on an unfamiliar road.
As an auto enthusiast, when you have a nice somewhat fast modified car with a loud exhaust you tend to like tunnels. They make your exhaust sound that much better, sort of like singing in the shower… Well, I found myself accelerating through this nice long and dark pair of tunnels; I had done this many times before in other tunnels. At the exit, I could barely see because it was so bright, a person standing and holding something while motioning. Wondering what they were doing, I stared, and stared, reaching the top of 4th gear, all while trying to comprehend what they were trying to tell me. Then I figured it out. They were telling me to slow down and watch the curve ahead, but it was too late. When I think about it now, I don’t ever remember seeing the road ahead until I was nearly out of the tunnel. In my mind I had assumed that it just went straight. At that point I was exiting the tunnel straight as the road curved to the left. I had no time to slam on my brakes beforehand. Realizing I was going way too fast for that section, I applied the brakes softly in an effort to keep the back end from sliding out, but, combined with a bump and rough switch in surface texture from concrete to asphalt, I lost traction. I began sliding to the left, the car oversteering, rotating counter-clockwise, over the center marker. I counter-steered, turning the steering wheel all the way to the right, but kept sliding to the left into the turnout. It was at this moment I knew, I had fucked up.
I slammed into a berm and expected to come to a complete stop, but the terrifying journey wasn’t over. I went over the edge. It happened so fast all I can remember is everything crashing and spinning. I thought I was rolling over down the side of the mountain. I was confident I was going to land upside down and get crushed. I was on the world's worst roller coaster that could only end with death, or so I thought. I came to a stop, still yelling, not fully comprehending what just happened, or how far down the mountain I was and that I actually just crashed my car. Luckily for me, I landed on a rock wall that was part of a drainage pipe that went through the mountain. It was the only horizontally level piece on an extremely steep sloped hill. Had I spun off a few feet before or after, I’d be dead.
I never thought that I would be one of the guys that wrecks his car in the canyons. I’m not even close to being a pro driver, but, at least before the accident I took just slight pride in my situational awareness while driving, my somewhat decent understanding of vehicle dynamics and how various driver inputs affect a vehicle in motion, my autocross and canyon experience, and the fact that I haven’t gotten any tickets or into any accidents since I got my license (for what it's worth). I messed up. I got too comfortable at the wrong moment and it got the best of me. It shows that things like this can happen to mostly anyone. The whole cruise up there was relaxed, leisurely, until that moment. I definitely wasn’t purposely trying to take that corner fast, I was caught up in the moment flying through those long tunnels, got distracted, and didn’t see the road ahead of me. I panicked last minute and that ultimately lead to this entire situation. I’m disappointed in myself, and I know some others may be disappointed in me as well. And I know it could have been worse in so many ways, and I’m kicking myself for that. But ultimately I’m glad to be alive and well and that I did not involve others in the wreck.
Car is a modified 2004 Subaru Forester XT.
