Varanasi City Guide | India Travel Videos
Join us as we visit Varanasi city in this travel guide featuring the best things to do in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Varanasi (also known as Benares, Banaras and/or Kashi) is the spiritual capital of India. As the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism you find many people from all over India visiting as well as tourists. In terms of attractions in Varanasi it is a destination worth visiting for the experience rather than a checklist of places to visit. Coming to the various ghats by day and night reveals what Varanasi is all about. You can take a boat ride in the morning for sunrise or later in the evening for sunset but the rest of the time I'd recommend just walking along the ghats and getting lost in the maze of back alleys in the old part of the city. At night be sure to check out the many evening performances and also it is worth visiting a burning ghat but remember to be respectful by putting away your camera.
Things to do in Varanasi Travel Guide:
1) Ganga Aarti (श्री गंगा आरती) performance at night in Varanasi where Brahmans hold large bowls of fire in their hands while offering holy mantras to river Ganges, Shiva (Hindu God of destruction), Surya (Sun God) and the universe
2) Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट) main ghat on the Ganga River
3) Wandering around in back-alleys in the old city quarter of Varanasi
4) Manikarnika Ghat (मणिकर्णिका घाट) burning ghat where bodies are cremated along the Ganges River
5) Boat ride in Varanasi on the Ganges River either for sunrise or sunset
6) Visiting the many ghats in Varanasi during different times of the day and in the evening

Varanasi City Guide | India Travel Video transcript:
Alright guys it is our second last destination here in India. We have finally made it to Varanasi (वाराणसी) & this is our first morning exploring the ghats.
Ghats is the word used to describe the steps that lead down to the river’s edge. There are a total of 87 ghats in Varanasi (वाराणसी), some bigger than others, but we just focused on a handful, starting at Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट) & working our way down. Along the way we saw former palaces built by royal families, cheap guesthouses that cater to backpackers & plenty of temples.
As lively as the Ganges is by day, we also made time to visit by night so we could watch the Ganga Aarti ceremony. This is a fire worship ceremony that takes place at Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट), with lots of singing, chanting, burning candles and billowing incense. You can watch the ceremony from the steps or aboard the boats for a small fee arriving early to claim a spot as it gets busy.
So one of my favorite things to do here in Varanasi (वाराणसी) is just wander around like go exploring through the old town is just like a labyrinth, it is like a maze. There is so much people watching. There is a lot of animals & cows. There is also a lot of opportunity to shop as well.
Lastly, it wouldn’t have been a proper trip to Varanasi (वाराणसी) without taking a boat ride down the Ganges River. We were up before the crack of dawn to meet our boatman, and our early morning wake up call was rewarded with one of the best sunrises we saw in India.
So we're wrapping things up here in Varanasi (वाराणसी) at the train station. We've done all of our train travel in India by trains so it is kind of appropriate that our very last journey to Kolkata is by train.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.

Varanasi, India - Travel Guide and Top Things To Do
Varanasi, located in North India, is one of the most sacred religious cities in all of India. It's a holy place, located next to the Ganges River. Dying in Varanasi is considered sacred, yet at the same time it's a city where people come to celebrate life and to splash in the water of the Ganges.
In the Varanasi travel guide I'll go over some of the top things to do in Varanasi. Unlike other huge cities like Delhi ( which boast an enormous amount of attractions to see and things to do, Varanasi is more about just being there. You don't have to rush from place to place seeing the sights, but it's all about hanging out either along the Ganges River or within the narrow Varanasi lanes and exploring, observing, and just watching. Spending the time just to sit and watch is one of the most rewarding things to do in Varanasi, India.
At the beginning of this video I first start the day at about 6:30 am with a leisure boat ride along the Ganges River. It's one of the most popular things to do, and for a good reason; Seeing the bank of the Ganges River from being in the river offers a truly magical glimpse into the life and death that takes place in the morning. Fog is especially common in the winter, and the day I went the fog was thick. Along with taking a boat in the Ganges River in Varanasi, another great way to explore is just on foot along the ghats. A ghat is a series of steps which lead down to the river. They offer a nice place to walk or a place to sit and watch. There are ghats throughout Varanasi. Dashashwamedh Ghat is the main one, but there are also two burning ghats where they burn bodies as well. One day while I was walking past the smaller of the two burning ghats in Varanasi, I was able to observe a funeral taking place where they sunk a body into the bottom of the Ganges River. Along with the rituals that went along with it, it was amazing to see.
If you're not along the river in Varanasi, the narrow ancient lanes are a great place to explore. You'll find all sorts of stores and shops selling cloth, spices, conveniences and some food stalls as well. Varanasi desserts are particularly famous, but also try round rotis and the local paan mouth chew. Within the lanes of Varanasi you'll also find Hindu shrines and temples like the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The line to enter the temple can be seriously long and the security is extremely tight in the area. One of the best ways to get around Varanasi, when you're on the main roads, is by taking a bicycle rickshaw. You'll be amazed at the places you can fit, but it's always a fun ride. Don't forget to stop on the side of the street to indulge is some delicious Varanasi street food while you're at it.
Finally, no trip to Varanasi is complete without mentioning the nightly aarti puja prayer ceremony, which is a ceremony dedicated to the gods of the Ganges River. This nightly ritual includes a line of holy brahmin who all perform rituals using fire, incense, and motion to bless the night. It's quite an event and something interested to witness.

TRAVEL VARANASI | FEEL BANARAS | KASHI 2019 | INDIA
#Varanasi, once known as #Kashi or #Banaras, #Benares, is a historical city in northern India. The city is sacred to Hindus and Jains and also one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with settlements dating back to the 11th century BC. Many Hindus believe that dying in Varanasi brings salvation/nirvana and so they make the trip to the city when they realize that they are close to death. For some, the culture shock of the burning corpses in plain view can be a bit overwhelming. However, the scene of pilgrims doing their devotions in the River Ganga at sunrise set against the backdrop of the centuries old temples is probably one of the most impressive sights in the world.

Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva . It has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city in older times was known as Kashi .][not in citation given]
The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the Ganges. The city has been a cultural centre of North India for several thousand years, and has a history that is older than most of the major world religions. The Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in Varanasi. Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, located near Varanasi.
Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. It is often referred to as the holy city of India, the religious capital of India, the city of Shiva, and the city of learning. Scholarly books have been written in the city, including the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. Today, there is a temple in the city, the Tulsi Manas Mandir. The current temples and religious institutions in the city are dated to the 18th century.[9] One of the largest residential universities of Asia, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), is located here.

Varanasi, India
Recorded February 10-11, 2013
Varanasi is a city on the banks of the Ganges in the Uttar Pradesh state of North India. A major religious hub in India, it is the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism.
During my two night stay in the city I take two different cruises on the Ganges River. The first being just after sunset for the nightly Aarti ceremony. The second was at sunrise as thousands of devout Hindus plunged into the waters of India's holy Ganges River in a ritual they believe can wash away their sins. I also visit Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism.

EXPLORING VARANASI | INDIA travel guide
India is an assault on all of the senses. Our first stop on our travels in India is Varanasi. Arguably INDIA'S most INTENSE CITY due to it's huge population, the smells, the animals and of course it's people.
In this India Travel Guide we show you the perfect day in Varanasi and How to survive India's most intense city.
Our Varanasi Travel Guide Today starts off our day by walking down to Assi Ghat to watch the Ganga Arti, a ceremony that takes place every morning to wake up mother Ganges. This is said to be one of the oldest continuously running ceremonies in the world and if you can get yourself out of bed extra early, its not one to miss!
Next we took a sunrise boat ride down the Ganges River. This is the number one thing recommended thing to do whilst travelling in Varanasi.
The Ganges River is extremely sacred to people of the Hindu faith. It's believed that one drop of Ganges water is enough to purify ones soul. Because of this thousands of people come to bath in the river every single day.
Next we took a stroll along the ghats, taking in the many fascinating sights along the way. In total Varanasi has 83 Ghats, all which serve different purposes. There are Ghats for bathing, washing clothes, fishing, docking boats and the most sacred of open air cremations. In order to get the full experience, its best to visit the Ghats at different times throughout the day.
We were in Varanasi during the incredible Kumbh Mela Festival. So the city was more crowded than usual as people made their pilgrimage to bath in the river ganges.
Stayed tuned as the next stop on our Indian adventures is the city of Agra, and the home of the Taj Mahal! To get there we are travelling by indian railway on a 3rd AC train.
