ST AUGUSTINE AND CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS | POKEMON GO PARK | BEACH VISIT
We're headed down to St. Augustine to see Castillo de San Marcos, but first, we have to stop by Pokemon Go Park in Jacksonville Beach, Florida!
The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States (Castillo San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico is older). Located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay in the city of St. Augustine, Florida, the fort was designed by the Spanish engineer Ignacio Daza. Construction began in 1672, 107 years after the city's founding by Spanish Admiral and conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire. The fort's construction was ordered by Governor Francisco de la Guerra y de la Vega after the destructive raid of the English privateer Robert Searles in 1668. Work proceeded under the administration of Guerra's successor, Manuel de Cendoya in 1671,[6] although the first stone was not laid until 1672.
After Britain gained control of Florida in 1763 pursuant to the Treaty of Paris, St. Augustine became the capital of British East Florida, and the fort was renamed Fort St. Mark until the Peace of Paris (1783) when Florida was transferred back to Spain. In 1819 Spain signed the Adams–Onís Treaty which ceded Florida to the United States in 1821; consequently the fort was designated a United States Army base and renamed Fort Marion, in honor of American Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. In 1942 the original name Castillo de San Marcos, was restored by an Act of Congress. The fort was declared a National Monument in 1924, and after 251 years of continuous military possession, was deactivated in 1933. The 20.48-acre (8.29 ha) site was then turned over to the United States National Park Service.
Castillo de San Marcos was twice besieged: first by English colonial forces led by Carolina Colony Governor James Moore in 1702, and then by Georgia colonial Governor James Oglethorpe in 1740. Possession of the fort has changed six times, all peaceful, amongst four different governments: the Spanish Empire, the Kingdom of Great Britain, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America (Spain and the United States having possession two times each).

City of St. Augustine
St. Augustine (Spanish: San Agustín) is a city in the Southeastern United States, on the Atlantic coast of northeastern Florida. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement within the borders of the continental United States. It is the second oldest continuously inhabited city of European origin in United States territory after San Juan, Puerto Rico (founded in 1521).
The county seat of St. Johns County, St. Augustine is part of Florida's First Coast region and the Jacksonville metropolitan area. According to the 2010 census, the city's population was 12,975. The United States Census Bureau's 2013 estimate of the city's population was 13,679, while the urban area had a population of 71,379 in 2012.
St. Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565, by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, Florida's first governor. He named the settlement San Agustín, as his ships bearing settlers, troops, and supplies from Spain had first sighted land in Florida eleven days earlier on August 28, the feast day of St. Augustine. The city served as the capital of Spanish Florida for over 200 years. It was designated as the capital of British East Florida when the colony was established in 1763 until it was ceded to Spain in 1783.
Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1819, and St. Augustine was designated the capital of the Florida Territory upon ratification of the Adams–Onís Treaty in 1821. The Florida National Guard made the city its headquarters that same year. The territorial government moved and made Tallahassee the capital in 1824. Since the late 19th century, St. Augustine's distinct historical character has made the city a major tourist attraction.
In 1965, St. Augustine celebrated the 400th anniversary of its founding, and jointly with the State of Florida, inaugurated a program to restore part of the colonial city. The Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board was formed to reconstruct more than thirty-six buildings to their historical appearance, which was completed within a few years. When the State of Florida abolished the Board in 1997, the City of St. Augustine assumed control of the reconstructed buildings, as well as other historic properties including the Government House. In 2010, the city transferred control of the historic buildings to UF Historic St. Augustine, Inc., a direct support organization of the University of Florida.
In 2015, St. Augustine celebrated the 450th anniversary of its founding with a four-day long festival and a visit from Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia of Spain.
On October 7, 2016 Hurricane Matthew caused widespread flooding in downtown St. Augustine.
On March 4, 2019 Tracy Upchurch was appointed to replace Mayor Nancy Shaver after she resigned due to health concerns. Tracy Upchurch served as mayor of the city of St. Augustine from 1990-1992. Upchurch is currently a practicing attorney, professor of law at Flagler College, and the interim mayor of the city of St. Augustine.

Saint Augustine, Florida - Fort Matanzas National Monument (2019)
Fort Matanzas National Monument was designated a United States National Monument on October 15, 1924. The monument consists of a 1740 Spanish fort called Fort Matanzas, and about 100 acres (0.4 km²) of salt marsh and barrier islands along the Matanzas River on the northern Atlantic coast of Florida. It is operated by the National Park Service in conjunction with the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in the city of St. Augustine.

Fort Matanzas St Augustine, FL
Fort Matanzas
The year is 1748, and as the sun begins to rise it emits a powerful glow that radiates off the eastern side of a small, stone structure situated in the middle of nowhere. The inhabitants of this simple building include seven Spanish soldiers, who have just risen and are beginning to engage in their daily duties. The main focus of these individuals is to maintain the safety and security of the residents of St. Augustine, who live several miles to the north. The seven soldiers patrol the waterways surrounding the Matanzas Inlet from their fortified watchtower and temporary residence: Fort Matanzas.
In essence, the fort was the lock on the backdoor to St. Augustine, Dick Orsini, captain of the Queen Matanzas II ferry, said.
Fort Matanzas is a monument that commemorates the Spanish phase of Colonial American history in Florida. The name Matanzas comes from the root word mata, meaning to kill. Hence, Matanzas refers to the place of many slaughters.
In 1562, French Hugenot Jean Ribault attempted to establish a base within Spanish America in the name of the King of France. His attempt failed, but two years later Fort Caroline was built on the St. Johns River under the direction of Rene de Laudonniere. The Spaniards viewed the establishment of Fort Caroline as trespassing on land they had discovered and explored. Therefore, King Philip II sent Pedro Menendez to build a settlement in Florida.
On August 28, 1565, Menendez, after a brief confrontation with French forces led by Ribault, established St. Augustine. Two weeks later, Ribault, whose troops outnumbered the Spaniards, set out to attack and gain control of St. Augustine. Fortunately for the Spaniards, a hurricane struck the northeast coast of Florida, scattering Ribault's vessels down the coast. This allowed Menendez's troops to travel on foot and capture the enemy base.
Eventually, the remaining French troops surrendered. Menendez had 245 prisoners put to death on the beaches 14 miles south of St. Augustine - thus, the name Matanzas.
In 1569, a wooden watchtower and thatched hut were built just north of the Matanzas Inlet to house six soldiers. These individuals took turns scanning the ocean waters for possible enemy threats. If a ship was sighted, a runner or man on horseback or in a log canoe was sent to alert St. Augustine.
In 1733, Gen. James Oglethorpe founded the English colony of Georgia on land claimed by Spain. On June 13, 1740, Oglethorpe began the siege of St. Augustine by blockading the Matanzas River. Due to the approaching hurricane season, the lack of naval support and the fact that St. Augustine was well prepared, Oglethorpe raised the siege and withdrew his forces.
The siege of 1740 convinced Gov. Manuel de Montiano that he needed to build a better, more equipped watchtower than the existing wooden structure. Montiano therefore summoned engineer Pedro Ruiz de Olano to build a stronger, more reliable stone structure.
The English gained control of Fort Matanzas, as well as the rest of Florida, by treaty in 1763. They, too, maintained the fort as a watchtower. Unfortunately, by the time Florida was ceded to the United States in 1821, the interior of the Matanzas fort was in ruins.
On Oct. 15, 1924, the fort was proclaimed a national monument, and in 1933 control of the fort was transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service. Today, due to much stabilization and restoration, the fort stands similar to its original design.
Fort Matanzas was made of coquina, a natural fragile-shell-stone. its main strengths were its strategic location and its armament supply. In 1750, five cannons were mounted to cover all approaching directions. Today, two cast iron cannons, mounted in 1793, remain. At the rear of the gundeck there was a water cistern that was capable of holding 1,500 gallons of water.
Fort Matanzas was built on an island less than two acres large. Today, due to time, tides and man, the island now occupies more than 200 acres and is referred to as Rattlesnake Island. The fort is accessible by boat only. The Matanzas Queen II, a ferry capable of holding 22 passengers, makes trips from the Visitors Center to the fort daily.
Dick Orsini, who has ferried passengers to the fort for 24 years, said the biggest change he has seen over the years is the addition of new bathrooms. He also said, The number of visitors coming to the fort is growing steadily. Annually, 50,000 people visit the park.
Orsini stressed all people should visit the fort. It is a part of history, a very early part of our history, he said. If you come to visit, let the ambience seep in. The fort is special because when you visit you go back in time. Even if it is only psychological, you have a chance to step out of the 20th century.

Barasoain Church | Malolos, Bulacan (Aerial Drone Shot)
Aerial view of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish - Barasoain Church - The Cradle of Democracy in the East | The First Philippine Republic.
Barasoain Church (also known as the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish) is a Roman Catholic church built in 1888 in Malolos, Bulacan. It is about 42 kilometers away from Manila. Having earned the title as the Cradle of Democracy in the East, the most important religious building in the Philippines, and the site of the First Philippine Republic, the church is proverbial for its historical importance among Filipinos.
Etymology
The term Barasoain was derived from Barásoain in Navarre, Spain to which the missionaries found the place in Malolos in striking similarity. When the Filipino revolution broke out, the Spanish authorities coined the term baras ng suwail, which means dungeon of the defiant because the church was a meeting place for anti-Spanish and anti-colonial illustrados.
First Philippine Republic
The Philippine Republic (Spanish: República Filipina, Filipino: Repúbliká ng̃ Pilipinas), more commonly known as the First Philippine Republic or the Malolos Republic, was a nascent revolutionary government in the Philippines. It was formally established with the proclamation of the Malolos Constitution on January 23, 1899, in Malolos, Bulacan, and endured until the capture of President Emilio Aguinaldo by the American forces on March 23, 1901, in Palanan, Isabela, which effectively dissolved the First Republic.
The First Philippine Republic was established after the Philippine Revolution against Spanish Empire (1896-1897) and the Spanish–American War between Spain and the United States (1898). Following the American victory at the Battle of Manila Bay, Aguinaldo returned to the Philippines, issued the Philippine Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898, and established a revolutionary Philippine government. In December 1898, Spain sold the Philippines to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris, making the United States formally the Philippines colonial power. The Malolos Constitution establishing the First Philippine Republic was proclaimed the following month. The Philippine–American War began in February 1899, which the Philippine Republic lost.
The Philippine Republic was the first constitutional republic in Asia. Although there were several Asian republics predating the First Philippine Republic for example, the Republic of Formosa or the Republic of Ezo, the Republic at Malolos was the first to frame a comprehensive constitution duly approved by a partially elected congress.

Top 10 Home Builders for 2019 - Who Sells the Most Homes in the United States
Builder Magazine has released its list of the biggest builders for 2019, based on 2018’s final numbers. There are plenty of familiar names on the list and for the 12th year in a row, D.R. Horton is at the top. In fact, the top 4 remain unchanged from the previous year.
Battle of Pensacola 1781
Early in March 1781 the long awaited Spanish attack on Pensacola began. On the afternoon of 11 March Gálvez' ships were at the entrance of Pensacola Bay, having already taken control of Santa Rosa Island. On 21 March 1781, Campbell made a humane proposal to Gálvez that the town and garrison of Pensacola should be spared. Unfortunately, in the night, before the Spanish commander replied, one of the British officers in charge of a fort burned several houses. Whether or not this act was committed with Campbell's knowledge is not known but it gave Gálvez grounds for accusing him of insincerity.
Spanish grenadiers and Havana militia pour into Fort George. Oil on canvas, United States Army Center of Military History
Detachments from Mobile and New Orleans arrived 28 March 1781, and on 19 April reinforcements, naval and army, Spanish and French, from Cuba led by General Jose Solano y Bote arrived. Campbell inspired his troops to defend Fort George. However, without naval protection nor adequate artillery to engage a counter assault, the Spanish artillery fire breached the ramparts on 8 May 1781, and struck a powder magazine. A powerful flotilla of warships neutralised outer British defences and began an amphibious siege of the town on 9 May 1781. John Campbell surrendered Fort George to the Spaniards on 10 May 1781. Under generous terms Governor Gálvez allowed the British troops, including Campbell, to return to New York.
Campbell was initially taken to Havana where he was paraded around the city, an act for which the Governor Juan de Cagigal was later imprisoned by the Spanish authories. Campbell was then repatriated to British territory. He remained in British-held New York City until the British left under the Treaty of Paris on Evacuation Day, 25 November 1783. Campbell lived just off Wall Street on the corner of Trinity Place and Thames Street.
