“Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is in the Alaska panhandle west of Juneau. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the area around Glacier Bay a national monumentunder the Antiquities Act on February 25, 1925.[3] Subsequent to an expansion of the monument by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) enlarged the national monument by 523,000 acres (2116.5 km2) on December 2, 1980 and in the process created Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve,[4] with 57,000 additional acres (230.7 km2) of public land designated as national preserve to the immediate northwest of the park in order to protect a portion of the Alsek River and related fish and wildlife habitats while allowing sport hunting.
“Glacier Bay became part of a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, was inscribed as a Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and in 1994 undertook an obligation to work with Hoonah and Yakutat Tlingit Native American organizations in the management of the protected area.[5] In total the park and preserve cover 5,130 square miles (13,287 km2). Most of Glacier Bay is designated wilderness area which covers 4,164 square miles (10,784 km2).”

EPIC BACKCOUNTRY HIKE IN DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE
Had an amazing time in the backcountry of Denali National Park and Preserve. We were fortunate enough to fly out with Kantishna Air Tax and spend some time at their lodge before our hike. We took the long 6 hour bus ride back to the beginning of the park for our way back.
For flights into the park, check out Katishna Air Taxi:

Alaska 2018 - 16 [Hiking in Denali National Park]
Come along on a couple of hikes we did in Denali National Park. We hope to get back to the park for more hiking before we leave Alaska. (See more photos and info in our blog post:
Mt. Healy Overlook Trail
This trail is 2.7 miles one way with 1700 ft. in elevation gain. But it’s totally worth it. The views up there are beautiful!
If you’re worried about running into bears while hiking in Denali National Park, this is a well-traveled trail and you will see people on it regularly. After the first part of the trail, you start to lose tree coverage. So be prepared with sunscreen.
Triple Lakes Trail
At 9.5 miles, the Triple Lakes Trail is the longest trail in Denali National Park. It was a crappy day and we had no intention of doing the whole thing, especially after Mt. Healy the day before.
We started at the southern end off of Alaska Highway 3 so we would get to see the lakes pretty quickly. There were few people on the trail so definitely be bear aware here. Bring your bear bells and bear spray.
We didn’t quite make it to the second lake. The part of the trail we hiked was mostly shaded so it would be perfect for hiking in Denali National Park on a hot day.

A Grizzly Bear in Denali National Park, Alaska
We came up on a large Grizzly Bear [ close to the road in Denali National Park, Alaska. It was working its way downhill, constantly munching on berries. It did not seem bothered by our car (or the other tourist cars/buses queued up behind us). In fact, at one point [00:36] is get to within 15-20 feet of us. After that is walks on to the road in front of our car and continues walking on. We follow it for a while (keeping a respectable distance) and continue taking videos and photos. It scared some tourists who were on the road and they took cover in their cars (not visible in the video). Eventually it got spooked and ran away presumably because another tourist car came at it from the other direction.
I've used a combination of videos and some still images just for continuity.
This was recorded near Mile 15 of the Denali National Park (the last point where private vehicles are allowed).
Date Recorded: August 17, 2012.
Camera: Nikon D7000.
Lens: Nikkor 18-105.

Kesugi Ridge Trail via Little Cole Creek and Byers Lake in Danali State Park - Epic Alaska Hike
On July 4, 2017 3 of us set out to hike the Kesugi Ridge trail in Danali State Park, which is just a few miles south of Danali National Park.
We started at Little Cole Creek Trailhead on July 4th at 9pm and finished our 30+ mile journey at 11am on July 8th.
It was an amazing trip. Before doing the hike I did a bunch of research and couldn't find a good video on YouTube detailing the hike. Hopefully this helps anyone who sets out on this amazing journey.
We were blessed with mostly amazing weather, but you need to be prepared for everything on this trial from bright sunny days, to rain, to fog so thick you can't see 100 feet. You also need to be on the lookout for bears and other wildlife.
We took 4 nights, and 5 days (2 were short days) to complete this hike. We saw some people who did the whole thing in 1 day (they were running it) and others who did it in 3 days or 4. I enjoyed the pace we did it at and if anything, I would take an extra day to enjoy the views. It's not a race to get this hike done, but an experience.
Special thanks to BenSound.com for the music.
