VARANASI | KASHI |
Varanasi is a city on the banks of the river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, India, 320 kilometres (200 mi) south-east of the state capital, Lucknow, and 121 kilometres (75 mi) east of Allahabad. A major religious hub in India, it is the holiest of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism and Ravidassia. Varanasi lies along National Highway 2, which connects it to Kolkata, Kanpur, Agra, and Delhi, and is served by Varanasi Junction railway station and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport.
Varanasi is also one of 72 districts in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. At the time of the 2011 census, there were a total of 8 blocks and 1329 villages in this district. The main native languages of Varanasi are Hindi and Bhojpuri.
Varanasi grew as an important industrial centre, famous for its muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works, and sculpture. Buddha is believed to have founded Buddhism here around 528 BCE when he gave his first sermon, The Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dharma, at nearby Sarnath. The city's religious importance continued to grow in the 8th century, when Adi Shankara established the worship of Shiva as an official sect of Varanasi. During the Muslim rule through Middle Ages, the city continued as an important centre of Hindu devotion, pilgrimage, mysticism and poetry which further contributed to its reputation as a centre of cultural importance and religious education. Tulsidas wrote his epic poem on Rama's life called Ram Charit Manas in Varanasi. Several other major figures of the Bhakti movement were born in Varanasi, including Kabir and Ravidas. Guru Nanak visited Varanasi for Maha Shivaratri in 1507, a trip that played a large role in the founding of Sikhism.
In the 16th century, Varanasi experienced a cultural revival under the Mughal emperor Akbar who patronised the city, and built two large temples dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu, though much of modern Varanasi was built during the 18th century, by the Maratha and Brahmin kings. The Kingdom of Benares was given official status by the Mughals in 1737, and continued as a dynasty-governed area until Indian independence in 1947. The city is governed by the Varanasi Nagar Nigam (Municipal Corporation) and is represented in the Parliament of India by the current Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, who won the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 by a huge margin. Silk weaving, carpets and crafts and tourism employ a significant number of the local population, as do the Diesel Locomotive Works and Bharat Heavy Electricals. Varanasi Hospital was established in 1964.

Diya floated by a devotee on river Ganga.
River Ganga or the Ganges is a major river of the Indian subcontinent, associated in myth and reality with the land and people of India as well as neighboring countries like Bangladesh. In Hinduism, the river Ganga is personified as Goddess and holds an important place in the Hindu religion. In Hindu mythology, it is believed that bathing in the river Ganga causes the remission of sins and facilitates the attainment of salvation or nirvana. This deep-rooted truth is proved by the fact that people travel from distant places to immerse the ashes of their kin in the waters of the Ganga at Varanasi or other places located on the banks of this holy river. Some of these sacred places, located on the Ganga, are Varanasi, Haridwar and Prayag.

Orchha cenotaphs : Chatri memorials to rulers of Orchha, along Kanchana Ghat of river Betwa
There are fourteen 'Chatries' or Memorials to the rulers of Orchha, grouped along the Kanchana Ghat of the river Betwa. There are the 17th and 18th centuries beautiful cenotaphs of the rulers of Orchha. Amidst this group of cubical structures with temple like spires, Bir Singh’s cenotaph alone has explicit Islamic features on it.Prince Salim was fleeing Agra. He had rebelled against his father, the all-powerful Mughal emperor, Akbar. Akbar sent his right-hand man, Abul Fazl to capture the Prince. They passed through the kingdom of the Bundelas. The Bundelas were fierce Rajput chieftains who ruled out of their hidden city of Orchha. In fact the word Orchha means Hidden. The Bundela cheiftain, Bir Singh Deo came to Salim's aid. He had Abul Fazl killed in an ambush and sent the head to Salim. It is said that upon seeing Abul Fazl' s head Salim grew so angry that he threw it into his toilet.Prince Salim eventually reconciled with his father and returned to Agra. Bir Singh Deo's favor was not forgotten and he was showered with Mughal patronage. With the coffers now full, Orchha now entered its golden age. The Bundelkhand style of architecture flowered and several fairy tales like palaces and temples were built. The Chattris or Cenotaphs were built to honor the dead ancestors of the Bundela rajas. The first Raja of the dynasty offered drops of his blood to the Goddess Kali and was called Bundela - One who has offered drops. His descendants carried this name till the line was faded.
The historic town of Orchha, nestled on the banks of river Betwa, was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput Chief, Rudra Pratap. Here, the river Betwa splits into seven channels, also called the Satdhara. The legend goes that this is in honor of the seven erstwhile Chiefs of Orchha.

Boat ride at Triveni Sanagm during Ardh Kumbh Mela in 2007
Pilgrims enjoying boating rides at Triveni sangam during Ardh Kumbh Mela at Prayaga in 2007.
More than 70 million people visited Ardh Kumbh Mela at Prayag in 2007.
Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river. It is considered to be largest peaceful gathering in the world. It is held every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik and Ujjain. Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these four places every twelfth year. Ardha Kumbh Mela is held at only two places, Haridwar and Allahabad, every sixth year.
Ardh Kumbh Mela is celebrated once in every six years after the hosting of Maha Kumbh Mela festival, the celebration of which takes place after every twelve years. The venue keeps on changing from time to time. There are primarily four locations for conducting the Ardha Kumbh Mela, namely Prayag near Allahabad, Ujjain, Nasik and Haridwar. Ardh Kumbh Mela has been drawing more and more crowds year after year. Pilgrims visit this religious mela for the cleansing of their soul.
During the festive period of Ardh Kumbha Mela, a tent city turns up to provide refuge to the thousands of worshippers. Plenty of religious Hindu organizations set up their camps. Different theatre groups come in the forefront and enact plays that depict scenes from the religious scriptures of Hindus. The story of war between the demons and deities for obtaining the nectar is acted out, which brings out the significance of conducting Kumbh Mela. The festival of Kumbha Mela is truly a spectacle of faith.
Triveni Sangam is the 'confluence' of three rivers. Sangama is the Sanskrit word for confluence. The point of confluence is a sacred place for Hindus. A bath here is said to wash away all of one's sins and free one from the cycle of rebirth. Triveni Sangam, in Prayag (Allahabad) has two physical rivers Ganges, Yamuna, and the invisible or mythic Saraswati River. The site is in Prayag, India.
Allahabad built on a very ancient site of the Aryans formerly known as Prayag, is located at the junction of the holy rivers Ganga and the Yamuna. The city acquired its present name in 1 largest religious gathering in the world, is held every 12 years at the confluence of the holy rivers attracting millions of Hindu devotees. This historically famous city was a centre of the Indian Independence movement and the home of the Nehru family. Today Allahabad is a rapidly growing commercial and administrative city in Uttar Pradesh.

Ghats leading to river Ganges in Varanasi
Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Mark Twain, the English author and literature, who was enthralled by the legend and sanctity of Benaras, once wrote: Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together . According to the 'Vamana Purana', the Varuna and the Assi rivers originated from the body of the primordial Person at the beginning of time itself. The tract of land lying between them is believed to be 'Varanasi', the holiest of all pilgrimages. The word 'Kashi' originated from the word 'Kas' which means to shine. Steeped in tradition and mythological legacy, Kashi is the 'original ground ' created by Shiva and Parvati, upon which they stood at the beginning of time. Varanasi is the microcosm of Hinduism, a city of traditional classical culture, glorified by myth and legend and sanctified by religion, it has always attracted a large number of pilgrims and worshipers from time immemorial.
To be in Varanasi is an experience in itself an experience in self--discover an eternal oneness of the body and soul. To every visitor; Varanasi offers a breathtaking experience. The rays of the dawn shimmering across the Ganges, the high-banks, the temples and shrines along the banks bathed in a golden hue soul stirring hymns and mantras alongwith the fragrance of incense filling the air and the refreshing dip in the holy waters gently splashing at the Ghats. Varanasi -- the land where experience and discovery reach the ultimate bliss. Varanasi is also renowned for its rich tapestry of music, arts, crafts and education. Some of the world renowned exponents India has produced in these fields were schooled in Varanasi's cultural ethos. Luminaries apart, Varanasi abounds in the art of silk weaving, an exotic work of art which manifests itself in precious Banarasi Silk Sarees and Silk brocades which are cherished as collector's items across the world today.
Varanasi is not only the cultural capital of India but occupies a significant place when it comes to commerce. The city is a flourishing commercial center. The shopping hotspots in Varanasi are Chowk, Gyan Vapi, Vishwanath Gali, Thatheri Bazar, Dashswamedh Gali and Golghar. Banarasi silk saris form an indispensable part of Indian Bride's trousseau and no Indian weddings are complete without them. To search some of these, one can visit the Temple bazaar and government-run emporia at Godaulia, Lahurabir and the Chowk. Varanasi is also famous for its brass-work. One can check Thateri bazaar for wall paintings and other articles. Otherwise one can just stroll down the lanes in the heart of the city and marvel at unusual objects on display such as brassware, copperware , wooden and clay toys and antique designs of heavy gold jewellery .
The other shopping attractions of varanasi include the hand-knotted carpets of Mirzapur. The wholesale flower market of Varanasi is also very popular in north India. The sale of flowers is very high particularly during the festivals of Deewali and Dhanteras. The city has a tremendously rich tradition of handicrafts, which makes for a wonderful shopping in Varanasi. Besides the illustrious fine silk and brocade fabrics one can also buy shawls, glass beads , bangles ,masks of Hindu and Buddhist deities lampshades, Kamandalam used by the saints to carry water etc. Most of the hotels have shopping arcades or showrooms within the complex. Banaras is also famous for mango varities such as Langda or Malda .Betel leaf is another specialty of Banaras and is a part of the cultural upbringing of the people of Banaras. The musical instruments made by the craftsman of Banaras are used by the renowned artists such as Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Bismillah Khan etc. are the few ones.

Varanasi has been a cultural centre of North India for several thousand years, and is closely associated with the Ganges. Hindus believe that death in the city will bring salvation, making it a major centre for pilgrimage. The city is known worldwide for its many ghats, embankments made in steps of stone slabs along the river bank where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions. Of particular note are the Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Panchganga Ghat, the Manikarnika Ghat and the Harishchandra Ghat, the last two being where Hindus cremate their dead. The Ramnagar Fort, near the eastern bank of the Ganges, was built in the 18th century in the Mughal style of architecture with carved balconies, open courtyards, and scenic pavilions. Among the estimated 23,000 temples in Varanasi are Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Shiva, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, and the Durga Temple. The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. An educational and musical centre, many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in the city, and it was the place where the Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed. One of Asia's largest residential universities is Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The Hindi-language nationalist newspaper, Aj, was first published in 1920.

Popular visitors attraction in Varanasi : Boat ferry across the Ganges
