Places to see in ( Maui - USA ) Wailuku
Wailuku is a census-designated place in and county seat of Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 15,313 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Maui County. Wailuku is located just west of Kahului, at the mouth of the ʻĪao Valley. In the early 20th century Wailuku was the main tourist destination on Maui, though it has since been eclipsed with the rise of the resort towns such as Kaʻanapali, so much that there are no hotels to speak of in Wailuku.
Historic sites in the town include Kaʻahumanu Church (named after one of Hawaiʻi's great monarchs, Queen Kaʻahumanu) which dates to 1876, the Wailuku Civic Center Historic District, the site of the Chee Kung Tong Society Building, and the Bailey House, a 19th-century former seminary and home that houses a history museum and the Maui Historical Society. There are two ancient temples near Wailuku, called heiau — the Halekiʻi Heiau and the Pihanakalani Heiau. Both date back hundreds of years and were used for religious purposes by the native Hawaiians. Wailuku is served by Kahului Airport.
Home to Maui’s most famous Hawaiian rulers, site of Kamehameha’s decisive 1790 victory at the Battle of Kepaniwai in the Iao Valley, location of the 19th century Mission Station and birthplace of the mighty sugar industry, Wailuku illustrates the powerful influences which shaped the town, the island and the state. The area was a center of power and population in pre-historic Hawaii. In the mid-1800s it was irrevocably changed when New England missionaries brought their religious beliefs, western skills and implements and new agricultural methods. By the 1860s the Wailuku Sugar Company (owned by C. Brewer & Co.) and other plantations were busy growing and milling sugarcane. Miles of ditches were dug, bringing irrigation water from deep in the mountains to the vast fields of central Maui, and the sugar industry flourished.
Wailuku is the new home of Maui's Golden Baseball League expansion franchise, called Na Koa Ikaika Maui. It is also the hometown of Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino and Atlanta Braves catcher Kurt Suzuki. Wailuku also hosts the Maui Bowling Center, which has hosted a strong number of local bowling leagues since its grand opening in 1948. The building was originally constructed in 1945 as a furniture store but was later converted in 1948 for use as a ten-lane bowling alley. The alley utilized manual pin-setters from its opening until 1961, when it converted to automatic setting machines. Located at the corner of Market Street and Vineyard Street in Wailuku.

Maui Tropical Plantation Is a great location for special events, private functions, relaxing with family, picnics, ziplining on Maui, special Chef's Dinners, Weddings and wedding receptions and a wide variety of other events. Visit during the day and feed the ducks and koi fish, enjoy a relaxing picnic in the gardens, or shop for gifts in one of the gift or art stores. A la sortie de Wailuku, Iao Valley Road, d'une longueur de 3,6 km, nous amène dans une forêt tropicale très dense: Iao Valley State Park, un parc de 2,5 hectares.
En fait, certains secteurs de cette vallée peuvent recevoir en moyenne près de 10 m de précipitations annuellement, ce qui le positionne au second rang des endroits les plus humides de l'État d'Hawaii.
La route serpente au pied de falaises verdoyantes et prend fin au stationnement du belvédère de l'aiguille d'Iao (Iao Needle), un pic abrupt situé dans un environnement très spectaculaire.

At this beautiful park, you can enjoy things like swimming, hiking, picnics, photography, scenic views, and explore botanical gardens featuring native Hawaiian plants, Plan to spend anywhere from 1-3 hours at Iao Valley depending upon your interests.
Iao marks a historic place in Hawaii's history.
The Battle of Kepaniwai was fought in 1790 between Hawaiʻi Island and Maui. The forces of Hawaiʻi were led by Kamehameha I, while the forces of Maui were led by Kalanikūpule. It is known as one of the most bitter battles fought in Hawaiian history.
The streams of Iao Valley were said to have been blocked by bodies after the battle finished, the reason behind the name Kepaniwai, meaning “the damming of the waters.”

Un court chemin pavé suivi d'un escalier mènent à une plate-forme d'observation qui offre une vue panoramique sur l'Aiguille de Iao (Iao Needle), une étroite formation rocheuse recouverte de verdure qui s'élève à 1200 pieds au fond de la vallée.
La végétation de la vallée de Iao est luxuriante et le magnifique paysage offre d'excellentes opportunités pour les amateurs de photos.
Un autre escalier part de cette plate-forme et mène à une petite maisonnette située au sommet de la colline, offrant ainsi une autre perspective de la vallée.
Du point de vue historique, cette vallée a été le site d'une importante bataille en 1790, celle de Kepaniwai où le roi Kamehameha I a conquis l'armée de Maui.
La majorité des visiteurs ne se rendent qu'à la plate-forme d'observation. Cependant, il y a un escalier qui mène à un sentier qui longe le ruisseau Iao situé dans le creux de la vallée.
Ce ruisseau est formé de plusieurs petites piscines naturelles dans lesquelles il est possible de se baigner, que vous partiez vers la droite ou vers la gauche.
Nous en avons d'ailleurs profité pour nous rafraîchir dans l'une de celles-ci.

Iao Valley state park maui hawaii.Towering emerald peaks guard the lush valley floor of Iao Valley State Park. Located in Central Maui just west of Wailuku. This peaceful 4,000-acre, 10-mile long park is home to one of Maui's most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle. This iconic green-mantled rock outcropping overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.
Aside from its natural tropical beautiful, sacred Iao Valley has great historical significance. It was here in 1790 at the Battle of Kepaniwai that King Kamehameha I clashed with Maui's army in his quest to unite the islands. Even with Iao Needle serving as a lookout point, Kamehameha defeated Maui's forces in a ferocious battle that ultimately changed the course of Hawaiian history.

On y retrouve donc des monuments commémoratifs ainsi que des habitations traditionnelles représentant les populations provenant de la Chine, du Japon, du Portugal, des Philippines ainsi que de la Nouvelle-Angleterre.
Le ruisseau Iao longe le parc. On y retrouve de multiples piscines naturelles dans lesquelles il est possible de se baigner.
C'est l'endroit idéal pour prendre une petite pause et profiter du paysage environnant.
Il n'y a aucun frais d'entrée et des tables de pique-nique, barbecues et toilettes sont disponibles sur ce site.
