Escaping The Economy of More | Andrea Horan | TEDxDublinInstituteofTechnology
As the owner of well known and much loved Dublin nail bar Tropical Popical, Andrea spends a lot of her time fielding the question 'When are you going to open more?' Here she explains the reasons behind wanting to escape the economy of more by challenging society's definition of success that is being thrust on us daily.
Andrea Horan is an entrepreneur; a communicator; a glitter activist and sometimes drag queen.
Following 10 glorious years spent in Youth Communications Agency Thinkhouse, the next obvious move was to open nail bar Tropical Popical (so obvious!) in 2012. Tropical Popical has provided her with the platform to flex her interest in art with collaborations with the RHA and the National Gallery of Ireland under her tropical belt. It’s also allowed her to do the type of work that’s most important to her and that she most enjoys – meeting locals within a kitsch & creative space.
Andrea celebrates her belief in the three F’s - feminism, femininity and fun – through Tropical Popical and her not-for-profit venture The Hunreal Issues. Established to try and mobilise the army of women who felt apathetic towards politics in general and reproductive rights in particular, the project aims to throw glitter on the subject of Repeal of the 8th Ammendment without minimizing the issue.

#ShareThePositivity
On Thursday April 28th, ALEX AND ANI had a #ShareThePositivity Day In Ireland. Goodwill and kindness was at the root of this day with plenty of fun in store for participants. The day kicked off with a Laughter Yoga session which guaranteed that people had a spring in their step and a smile on their face, ready to take on the day afterwards! For busy commuters getting their caffeine fix on the way into work, ALEX AND ANI collaborated with some of Dublin’s best coffee houses to provide the first 100 coffees of the day. This means people enjoyed their morning brew courtesy of ALEX AND ANI. We encouraged recipients to pass on this positivity gesture, perhaps picking up a cup for someone in need or a colleague who could do with a pick-me-up! There was ALEX AND ANI tuk-tuks helping to share the positivity with free lifts around the city and because music lifts the spirits, we brought the tunes to you! The Painted Lady was on wheels spinning the decks whilst the Raw Edge Crew, busted some moves and encouraged impromptu dance parties. For those feeling a little shy, high fives were the order of the day. The aim of the day was to lift and inspire the people of Ireland. We encouraged everyone to pass on the goodwill and #ShareThePositivity in any way they could.
