Most people have heard of the Portuguese island of Madeira, but not many know exactly where it is. Located more than 600 miles southwest of Lisbon, and off the west coast of Morocco, it is a mere speck in the vast Atlantic Ocean.
Madeira, along with its sister island of Porto Santo, is actually the summit of an undersea mountain, rearing up with craggy cliffs from the warm blue Gulf Stream waters in one of the deepest parts of the Atlantic. It features one of the world's highest ocean cliffs, soaring 589m above the sea, which presented a forbidding sight to the ancient Portuguese mariners who first discovered the island archipelago in the 15th century.
Madeira is tiny, just 13 miles wide and 35 miles long and has no beaches, but it does have an Eden-like beauty with its rich volcanic soil having turned it into a botanical wonderland and agricultural treasure house.

A ilha da Madeira faz parte do sector Atlântico Oriental da Macarronésia, como é denominado o conjunto dos arquipélagos do Atlântico Norte com proximidade ao continente Africano. É uma ilha vulcânica com um clima temperado e húmido. A temperatura da água é temperada-quente (17-24ºC), mantendo-se estável ao longo de todo o ano. É caracterizada por ter uma plataforma insular reduzida, sendo que podemos encontrar-nos a grandes profundidades a uma pequena distância da costa. As águas deste arquipélago são oligotróficas, o nos que permite mergulhar quase sempre com muito boa visibilidade, num azul sem par, mesmo junto à costa. A existência de numerosos bancos e montanhas submarinas entre as ilhas, bem como a proximidade do continente africano, permitem, no entanto, que se concentre na Madeira uma biodiversidade faunística muito característica, por coexistirem espécies de origem temperada e tropical, dando lugar a fenómenos ecológicos especiais. Uma das particularidades deste arquipélago é o facto de constituir um corredor para espécies epipelágicas de grande mobilidade e algumas migratórias, como as raias, ratões, tunídeos e outros grandes peixes pelágicos como os charuteiros que formam enormes cardumes que frequentemente encontramos ao mergulhar. Algumas destas espécies chegam a tornar-se residentes, sendo possível avistá-las durante todo o ano. A baía d'Abra é um local com baixa pressão urbanística e está adjacente a uma área classificada como Sítio de Importância Comunitária, integrante da Rede Natura 2000. O seu estatuto de conservação permite que se mantenham na proximidade as condições naturais necessárias à conservação da biodiversidade original e tão típica desta ilha, providenciando uma experiência de mergulho riquíssima e imperdível.

Savoy Saccharum Resort & Spa in Madeira, Portugal is one of the most stylish and elegant hotels in which I had the pleasure to stay. Built on the site of an old sugar cane mill, it became the inspiration for the hotel interior of the acclaimed local interior designer Nini Andrade Silva.
Large photographs of sugar cane cover the walls, and historic metal decoration adorns the restaurants. Against the background of a sugar cane motif, there is a stylishly designed, modern resort with dark interiors by Andrade Silva. It is a hotel so beautifully integrated into the surrounding nature that we have the impression that its extension of mountain.

Spectacular sunset in Madeira Beach, Florida
Never had I seen sunsets such as the ones I saw while vacationing on the Gulf Coast of Florida in January of 2014. My son used to point out the sunsets when he was small and exclaim Look, Mom! God's painting! Since losing him in 2006 I always think of that when I see one and I was thinking about him while I watched this one, too. Enjoy :)
