Family Vacation to Yellowstone Day 8 - Hike to Trout Lake, Lamar Valley, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone
We started out the very busy day with a hike to Trout Lake! If you are near the NE entrance of Yellowstone this is an absolute must! It's a fairly easy hike and the end result is simply breathtaking. We then stopped in Lamar Valley and enjoyed seeing the herds of Bison in their element. We finished the most part of the day at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. While this can be a crowded area it is well worth elbowing your way through! I would recommend going later in the afternoon (after 2pm) for a chance at parking. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching!! :)

Exploring Yellowstone National Park | Camping at Henry's Lake State Park
We decided to camp at Henry's Lake State Park campground instead of fighting the crowds at Yellowstone National Park. It was 17 miles from West Yellowstone with electric and water hookups (some sites had full hookups). The best part was the stellar cell phone reception so we were happy campers. It was a great base to explore both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park.
While there, we had a ton of rain and our first flat tire of the trip, so things didn't go exactly as planned but that's just how it goes. We still had an incredible time in the area and definitely want to go back!

Backpacking Yellowstone National Park: A 10 Day October Thorofare Trip
This is a 10 day backpacking loop we did in October, 2015. This is in the south east corner of Yellowstone National Park. We start and end at the Heart Lake Trail Head. Day 1 we hike in and camp at Heart Lake. We the last person we will see until day 10. Day 2 we hike to Grouse Creek, and then follow that up to the South Arm of Yellowstone Lake to camp at 7N4. A grizzly bear comes into camp that night, and hangs around the area all night. Fresh tracks are everywhere in the mud the next morning. Day 3 we hike over to the Southeast Arm of Yellowstone Lake, and camp at a spectacular campsite, 6A3. A huge windstorm develops in the early morning, knocking over several trees in our camp. We stop at the Trail Creek Patrol Cabin, which has a down tree on it, and witness over a dozen trees fall withing a 30 minute period. We continue hiking, cross the Yellowstone River, and camp night 4 at 6C2, which is probably my favorite backcountry campsite in the park. During the night, something whacks our tent. The next 2 days we loiter along the river. We camp at 6Y6 night 5, and 6T2 night 6. Both nights we hear wolves come by camp. Day 7 we cross the Yellowstone River again, and climb up to Mariposa Lake, camping there. Day 8 we cross the Snake River, and follow it down to campsite 8C9. Day 9 we work our way back to Heart Lake, camping at campsite 8J6 for the last night of the trip. We see 2 bears while hiking, and then have another bear in camp several times during the night. In the morning our fire pit was dug out, with fresh bear tracks in the mud. We hike back to our car at the trail head to finish the trip.

Fishing for native cutthroat in Yellowstone backcountry-Heart Lake
I backpacked for three nights in the backcountry of Yellowstone. I struggled to catch a fish in Heart Lake, but finally hooked one right before calling it quits. I foul hooked him so the fight was a tough one! Skip to 2:30 if you want to get to the fish.
Soon I'll post another video of me catching some tiny cutthroats in some small streams my second night there--much more my element!

Backpacking Yellowstone National Park: The 9 Day Shoshone Lake, Madison Lake, Summit Lake Loop
This is a 9 day, off-trail backpacking loop in Yellowstone National Park. We start and end at Old Faithful. On day 1, we start late and hike to Mallard Lake. On day 2, we cross over to Teal Lake, and then drop down to Heron Creek. We follow that to the road, and then head down the De Lacy Creek trail to Shoshone Lake for night number 2. On day 3, we hike up to Pocket Lake, and then bush whack to the headwaters of Shoshone Creek. We follow that out to the trail and Shoshone Geyser Basin. We camp on Shoshone Lake night 3. Day 4, we explore the Shoshone Geyser Basin, then follow Cold Mountain Creek up and over to the meadows by Douglas Knob. We camp at backcountry site 9D3. Day5, we follow the meadows towards Madison Lake, and then continue down the Firehole River to campsite OA3. On day 6, we bush whack up an unnamed drainage, and work our way over to Summit Lake. We spend 2 nights at Summit Lake. On day 7, we hike out and explore Smoke Jumper Hot Springs. On day 8, we follow one of the tributaries of the Little Firehole River, and camp in the meadows at OD2. On day 9, we hike past Mystic Falls all the way back to Old Faithful. For photos, see Hugh's Flickr page: .

Yellowstone National Park - Lewis Falls (2018)
Yellowstone National Park is an American national park located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world. The park is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful geyser, one of its most popular features. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.
Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years. Aside from visits by mountain men during the early-to-mid-19th century, organized exploration did not begin until the late 1860s. Management and control of the park originally fell under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Interior, the first being Columbus Delano. However, the U.S. Army was subsequently commissioned to oversee management of Yellowstone for a 30-year period between 1886 and 1916. In 1917, administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service, which had been created the previous year. Hundreds of structures have been built and are protected for their architectural and historical significance, and researchers have examined more than a thousand archaeological sites.
Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles (8,983 km2), comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-elevation lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered an active volcano. It has erupted with tremendous force several times in the last two million years. Half of the world's geysers and hydrothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism. Lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. The park is the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest remaining nearly-intact ecosystem in the Earth's northern temperate zone. In 1978, Yellowstone was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hope you enjoy a glimpse of our trip!
Mount Washburn - Yellowstone National Park
#yellowstonehikes #yellowstonenationalpark #mtwashburntrail
The Mt Washburn trail in Yellowstone National leads to one of three lookout stations that offer sweeping views of the world first national park.
Beginning at Dunraven Pass follow the old wagon trail. Along the way enjoy the mind-boggling views of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Hayden Valley, Yellowstone Lake and the pine forests that dominate Yellowstone's landscape.
One a clear day, expect views of more than 90 miles. From the top, you'll be able to survey almost the entirety of the Yellowstone Caldera, the massive 50-mile wide scar, left behind by Yellowstone's prehistoric eruptions.
6.4 miles out and back and roughly 1400 feet of ascent, this hike is suitable for intermediate to advanced hikers. But warning, Yellowstone is prime bear country. Stay alert, hike in groups and know how to respond to a bear encounter.
