This, to me was truly breathtaking. I’ve always wanted to know what a lighthouse looked like on the inside and I’m grateful to say I got that opportunity. Highland Light is still referred to as Cape Cod Lighthouse and this amazing structure is still in use today.

The Highland Light (previously known as Cape Cod Light) is an active lighthouse on the Cape Cod National Seashore in North Truro, Massachusetts. The current tower was erected in 1857, replacing two earlier towers that had been built in 1797 and 1831. It is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Cape Cod.
In 1797, a station authorized by George Washington was established at this point on the Cape, with a wood lighthouse to warn ships about the dangerous coastline between Cape Ann and Nantucket. It was the first light on Cape Cod. In 1833, the wood structure was replaced by a brick tower and in 1840 a new lantern and lighting apparatus was installed. In 1857 the lighthouse was declared dangerous and demolished, and for a total cost of $17,000, the current 66-foot brick tower was constructed.
On June 6, 1900, the light was changed from a fixed beam to flashing, with a new. The new Barbier, Benard & Turenne first-order Fresnel lens had four panels of 0.92 meter focal distance, revolved in mercury, and gave, every five seconds, flashes of about 192,000 candlepower nearly one-half second in duration. While the new lens was being installed, the light from a third-order lens was exhibited atop a temporary tower erected near the lighthouse; it was later sold at auction. The Highland Light was then the most powerful on the east coast of the United States. Two four-horsepower oil engines with compressors operated by an engine fueled by kerosene, were added to ensure that the fog signal could be activated within ten minutes instead of the previous 45. A new fog signal was installed in 1929, an electrically operated air oscillator, to make it audible over a greater distance.
The lighthouse was converted to electric operation in 1932 with a 1000-watt beacon. In 1946, Highland Light's Fresnel lens was replaced by modern aerobeacons, first by a Crouse-Hinds DCB-36 double rotating light and then by a Carlisle & Finch DCB-224, with a second unit as backup. Unfortunately, the Fresnel lens was severely damaged when it was removed, but fragments are on display in the museum on site. The light was fully automated by 1986 with a Crouse-Hinds DCB-224 rotating beacon. In 1998, a VRB-25 optical system was installed. Most recently, the light source is a Vega Marine LED beacon model 44/2.5 installed in April 2017.
The current location of the lighthouse is not the original site. It was in danger of falling down the cliff due to beach erosion, so the structure was moved 450 feet (140 m) to the west. The government funding to do so was supplemented by money raised through fund raising by the Truro Historical Society. The move was accomplished by International Chimney Corp. of Buffalo, New York and Expert House Movers of Maryland over a period of 18 days in July, 1996. The move left the light station on Cape Cod National Seashore property, bordering the Highland Golf Course. After an errant golf ball broke a window, they were replaced with unbreakable material. In 1998, the keeper's house was modified to be a gift shop and museum.

Martha Vineyard - It is a beautiful island located on south of Cape cod.
Can be reached through ferry. It is preferable to take Island Queen ferry from Falmouth Cape Cod to Oak Bluffs (MY) was it is budget friendly (offers $20 return ticket). Once in Martha one can rent a bike, moped or car and enjoy the scenic beauty of the island with some trails offering ocean view on both side of rode.

Sagamore Hill Trail
By looking at the present landscape, one can see into the past. Sagamore Hill is rich in cultural and natural history. What was once an Indian Council gathering place later became a World War II Coastal Military Installation. The land is now a mixture of field, forest, marsh and swamp.
Come explore the features which comprise the story of Sagamore Hill. The trail to your left will lead you to the summit of Sagamore Hill for a view over looking Cape Cod Bay and the eastern entrance to the Cape Cod Canal.

A siren pierces the air! A German submarine is sighted! Soldiers scramble to their respective positions to defend the eastern entrance of the Cape Cod Canal from enemy attack.
This was only a drill. Enemy vessels were sighted along these sores, yet they never ventured within range of the guns of Sagamore Hill.
The field before you was the site of the 241st Coastal Battery C encampment from the late 1941 through WW II. At the end of the war the camp was disassembled and the field has now returned to a natural community.
Ready Rooms
Before you are Ready Rooms. A series of underground tunnels connected the plotting rooms and ammunition storage rooms behind the hill to the observation and battery command station atop the hill. Side tunnels allowed movement of ammunition to the Ready Rooms where it was stored for use at the gun emplacements which flanked Sagamore Hill.
PANAMA MOUNT
The 241st Coastal Battery C used this Panama Gun Mount as a firing base. At the onset of World War II, the United States Army positioned 155 MM Field Artillery pieces at critical coastal locations. The defense of the easterly entrance entrance to the Cape Cod Canal was critical to the war effort. Allied shipping used the canal as a safe passage way and assemblage area for convoys going overseas.
The Panama Mount, developed by the U.S. Army for the defense of the Panama Canal, gave the 155 MM greater accuracy and enabled the gun crew to rotate the weapon 360 degrees. The field artillery piece weighed 12 tons and fired 120 pound projectiles at a rate of four per minute. With a range of approximately 20 miles, the easterly entrance to the Cape Cod Canal was well protected.

Mr. Albert Raneo of Harwich
Albert Raneo, a third generation Cape Verdean Cape Codder, is a lifelong resident of the Town of Harwich. As a young man, he played baseball and basketball. Mr. Raneo is a veteran and served in the United States Air Force. He is married to the former Josephine Galvin. Afterwards he was a surveyor, then Superintendent of the Highway Department and subsequently Director of Public Works for the Town of Harwich. He also worked on the planning and construction of roads in the Cape Cod National Seashore. Especially after retirement, Mr. Raneo has been deeply involved in many community activities and organizations for which he has won many awards. Currently, he is active at the Harwich Historical Society’s Brooks Academy Museum, explaining exhibits to visitors. He also leads the HHS’s Cape Verdean Educational Outreach Program at Monomoy and Cape Cod Regional Technical High Schools. He is often asked to speak about Cape Verdean culture and heritage.

Gloucester Massachusetts 4K
In 1642 the Massachusetts Bay Colony set aside the rocky land beyond the Annisquam, and named it Gloucester. The new settlers homesteaded and fished, but the area was also thickly wooded, so initially timber, not fish, was Gloucester’s primary export. It was so important that in 1667 settlement in the area that was to become Rockport over a century later was forbidden, in order to protect the forest.
About 40 of these early settlers built houses in the heart of Cape Ann in an area called Dogtown, a place of myth and mystery even today. In the 1700s it was occupied by some of our wealthiest citizens, and provided a safe refuge from both the occasional pirate and marauding French and British ships. By 1830 its last inhabitant had been taken away to the Poor Farm and nothing now remains of this once thriving community but the cellar holes. During the Great Depression local philanthropist Roger W. Babson hired out-of-work stone cutters to carve inspirational sayings into 23 of the large boulders dotting the area. At the same time he donated 1,150 acres of Dogtown to the City of Gloucester for use as a park and watershed, which currently offers rich recreational opportunities to hikers, bikers, dog-walkers, cross-country skiers, horseback riders and nature lovers.
Gloucester also had a good safe harbor with easy access to the rich off shore fishing grounds, so over time, as the trees became less plentiful, the major industry gradually changed to fishing and foreign trade. In 1713 the schooner, which became the country’s foremost fishing vessel for more than 200 years, was first designed and built in Gloucester. By the early 1800s shipbuilding was increasing and the fishing fleet was traveling to the Grand Banks after halibut. In 1879 alone there were almost 450 fishing vessels in town employing over 5,000 men catching more than 91million pounds of cod, haddock, halibut, hake, pollock, mackerel and herring. Sometimes you could not see the water in the harbor for the vessels moored there. But all this came with a price. That same year was devastating for the Gloucester fleet. Thirty-two vessels and 266 men were lost, half of them in a single February storm. In 1883 the young fisherman Howard Blackburn, adrift in his dory in a raging snow storm, rowed towards land for five days, his hands frozen to the oars. He survived the ordeal but lost all his fingers. Despite this handicap he later sailed single-handed across the Atlantic in his sloop Great Western (which can be visited at the Cape Ann Museum). The names of 5,368 lost fishermen are inscribed on 9 bronze plaques where the famous Fisherman at the Wheel statue stands looking out to sea. Gloucester fishermen continue to brave the seas today, making the city the oldest fishing community in the nation.
Gloucester has a thriving cultural heritage too. Books have been written and movies made of and in Gloucester (among them Kipling’s Captain’s Courageous and Junger’s The Perfect Storm), and the city is featured in the popular TV series Wicked Tuna. Rocky Neck, home to one of the oldest working Art Colonies in America, protects the inner harbor. There, artists like Theresa Bernstein, John Sloan, Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, Frederick J. Mulhaupt and many others found both a home and inspiration.

Cape Cod is an amazing destination for a vacation or if you apply for the work&travel program, you can enjoy the incredible nature all along the Cape, the bike trail is one of the best things to do here, you can enjoy the fresh air and cycle for almost 22 miles.
The sunsets are very special here, the colors you get to see here are something else.
Provincetown is one of the best places in the world when it comes to whale watching.
The Pligrim monument is a must do not only beacuse of the incredible views you get from the top but also because you can learn a lot about the history of Cape Cod at the Provincetown museum located at the bottom of the tower.
The resorts that you can find here are amazing, you can do a lot of activities there, you can check Ocean Edge for that.
Wrentham is a great place for shopping, everything is very cheap there.
You can enjoy Six flags, as it is one of the best amusement parks in US, you can have fun at the aquapark or at the rollercoaster area.
The beaches of Cape Cod are some of the best in the world, on the bay side or at the ponds you can get warm, calm water comparing to the ocean side where you will get cold water and huge waves.
Truro is perfect if you want to catch incredible views and see amazing houses, you can get inspired by their great architecture.
The Chatham Pier fish market is a great short stop that you need to make, you can see a lot of sea lions, seals or even sharks if you are lucky enough.
If you want to have fun, Beachcomber in Wellfleet is your best option on the Cape.
The Sagamore & Bourne bridges are very nice, you can get really good views from them of the Cape Cod canal.
The food on the Cape is delicious, almost everywhere you go you will get really good food.
When it comes to transportation, you can use the bus as it is very cheap and you can get everywhere you need by using them.
This guide is perfect especially if you’ve got a limited time to spend there, so you can decide what's a priority for yourself.
