Sadly, there was a recent fire in the outer Tsukiji Market at a legendary ramen shop. Luckily no one has been reported injured from the fire, but it is very sad to see some legendary Japanese street food stalls completely destroyed.
Ok, now back to the information from this Japanese street food tour of Tsukiji Market in Tokyo!
If you’re a food lover, there’s now way you’re going to visit Tokyo without a trip to Tsukiji Market. The inner part of the market is where you’ll find all the fresh seafood - the fish market part of the market. The outer part of the market is where you’ll find all sorts of Japanese street food snacks, some of which are seafood, others are not, and where you’ll find restaurants and all sorts of market stalls.
Here’s the list of everything I ate and where during this Japanese food tour in Tokyo (also, everything is on this map:
Kitsuneya - legendary organ stew
Address: 4 Chome-9-12 Tsukiji, Chuo, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan
Organ stew - 850 JPY ($7.70) per bowl
Sea urchin (uni) - 500 JPY ($4.53)
Nishin Tasuke
Eel skewer - 200 JPY ($1.81) per skewer
Ajino Hamato
Corn fishcake - 300 JPY ($2.71)
Tsukiji Saito Fisheries
Giant oyster - 1,400 JPY ($12.68)
Home-style Sushi - 本種
Large plate sushi - 1,500 JPY ($13.59)
Chirashi don - 900 JPY ($8.15)
Matcha ice cream - 400 JPY ($3.62)
Tamago (sweet egg omelet) - 100 JPY ($0.91)
Blowtorched scallop - 1,000 JPY ($9.05)
Tenfusa Tempura - amazing small restaurant for tempura
Address: 5 Chome-2-1 Tsukiji, Chuo, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan
Total price - 2,500 JPY ($22.64)
This tour includes 10 different Japanese street foods. Probably my favorite thing of the entire day was the giant oysters, the amazing home style sushi, and the blowtorched seafood scallop. But really Tsukiji Market is a Japanese food paradise and a seafood lover's dream come true.
When you visit Tokyo, I hope you have an amazing time eating at Tsukiji Market!

Japan Street Food - Tsukiji Fish Market (築地市場 Tsukiji shijō), Tsukiji Tokyo
The Tsukiji Market (築地市場 Tsukiji shijō), supervised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market (東京都中央卸売市場 Tōkyō-to Chūō Oroshiuri Shijō) of the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs, was the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. It was also one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind. The market opened on 11 February 1935 as a replacement for an older market destroyed in the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, and closed on 6 October 2018 to move to the new Toyosu Market, 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) away. The market was located in Tsukiji in central Tokyo between the Sumida River and the upmarket Ginza shopping district. While the inner wholesale market had restricted access to visitors, the outer retail market, restaurants, and associated restaurant supply stores remain a major tourist attraction for both domestic and overseas visitors.

We're starting out with our first Japanese street food by trying a nice Uni Ikura Don also known as sea urchin and salmon roe bowl. This is the perfect street food to try in Japan in the morning for breakfast! You can also eat amazing fresh sashimi in this sushi restaurant, but I preferred the bowl of salmon roe and sea urchin.
After this, we found the most INSANE Sashimi stall, serving up fresh tuna sashimi by the cube, sliced right in front of you! It doesn't get any better than this! It is served to you with a little soy and wasabi, absolutely perfect!
After the amazing tuna sashimi, we went deeper into the Tsukiji market to find some other Japanese street food, and found a stall selling more raw Japanese seafood, and decided to try the raw scallops. They were super tasty!
After this we found a stall selling a dish known as Kuromon don, a rich beef offal stew over top of rice and topped with green onions. It was very delicious and super fun to enjoy right on the street! You just pull up a chair and sit down on the counter and watch them scoop up this delicious Japanese street food right before your eyes!
After this, we went for a famous bowl of ramen noodles in Japan, at Ichiran ramen. It is a Tonkatsu style broth, so quite creamy and rich, and the best part is how you can customize it exactly how you want it, with different levels of spiciness and richness, all from a machine!
After this amazing ramen, we went for a once in a lifetime Sushi experience at Nishi-azabu Kamikura. It wasn't cheap, but it was an amazing experience that you will always remember. The master chef cuts each piece of raw fish for you and creates Sushi for you individually and serves it to you by hand. It's unforgettable and you can taste new flavours and textures with each piece.
Here are the addresses for the restaurants we ate at in this Japanese street food video:

Japanese Street Food Guide To Tsukiji Fish Market | Tokyo Japan Travel Guide
Here are some of the best local street food to try in Tsukiji! From Japanese sweets like maguro yaki (tuna shaped taiyaki) to savouries like the popular sea urchin and eel sticks :)
In the end of the video I also gave some tips about which sushi restaurant to pick to eat at in Tsukiji and in short all of the sushi shops are great - the fish all come from the same place so the sushi is all pretty similar!
The crowded places with huge lines are often just because they are advertised more on the internet or have a English friendly website. Local shops are less advertised online as they already have a reputation with the locals so go somewhere different from all the tourists and find your special hidden gem in Tsukiji!
Shops mentioned in order:
1. Maguro-yaki: Sanokiya さのきや
2. Eel Stick: Tsukiji Unagi Shokudo 築地うなぎ食堂
3. Sea Urchin: Tsukiji Itadori 築地虎杖
4. Egg Roll: Tsukiji Yamacho 築地山長
5. Ice Cream: Tsukiji Kujiranotomisui 登美粋

Tsukiji Market, located in the Chuo Ward of Tokyo, right next to the fancy district of Ginza, is mostly known for it hosting the famous Tuna Auctions in the morning, attracting millions of tourists every year. However that's not why we are there today.
The market is also a PARADISE for street food! With hundreds of little shops & restaurants selling a variety of foods from Tamagoyaki to sushi or even Wagyu Beef, you can definitely find something you'll like there.
The market is actually divided into two very distinct zones, the inner and outer market. The inner market is where the tuna auctions happens around 5:50AM, but apart from the auction, access for tourists is restricted until 9:00AM.
Then you have the outer market where you can roam freely, try out different kinds of delicious foods and beverages, and more.
If you are looking to come to the market, it is easily accessible by subway with the Hibiya Line to Tsukiji Station, then a 5 minute walk from the station to the market.
Be careful to check the calendar of the inner market on their official site so that you come on a day where it is closed.
Calendar:
The market is free of access.
Here is a list of the things we tried at the outside market:
• TAMAGOYAKI (100¥)
• TUNA SUSHI (2000¥)
• SCALLOP/SEA URCHIN SKEWER (1000¥)
• WAGYU BEEF SKEWER (1000¥)
• GRILLED IKA (500¥)
• ICHIGO DAIFUKU (300¥)

What NEW Tokyo Tsukiji Fish Market is like AFTER Toyosu MOVE | Street Food Gone!?
Japanese Street Food Guide for new Tokyo Tsukiji Fish Market and new Toyosu Fish Market after moving. The Tokyo Street Food in the Jogai Tsukiji Market remains intact. All the Tsuji street food vendors are still there. We take a look inside the new Toyosu Market and show you what the fish market auction section is like. If you love Japanese street food, then this Tsukiji market is a Tokyo Street Food spot you should visit. After Tsukiji Jonai Fish Market closed down, now there are 2 Tokyo Fish Market areas, one area for Fish auctions and one for tourist and street food. We visit Toyosu Fish Market on the fist day of the fish market opening, October 13 2018. The Toyosu Fish Market tour is great but my favorite is still the Japanese street food in the Tsukiji Fish Market. For my Top 10 things to eat at Tsukiji Fish Market, please check out my Tsukiji Fish Market Guide below:
