Sheep cross Bideford bridge
Traffic came to a standstill as a little bit of history was re-enacted across a bridge in North Devon on Saturday 30th June 2012.
Shoppers stood and watched as the historic right to drive sheep across Bideford Bridge was exercised for the first time in centuries.
The ancient ritual was brought to life by the Guild of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen, from Tuckers Hall in Exeter who were on hand to guide the flock across the bridge on Saturday.
During the 16th and 17th century the wool industry was hugely important to the local economy, combining sheep farming with the wool mills and manufacture of serge, the finished cloth, in Exeter.
