Benjamin Franklin called the state a “barrel tapped at both ends, referring to its proximity to the cities of New York and Philadelphia. The annual Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, NJ brings a collection of skilled athletes from across the country to compete in a game well over 2,000 years old. Cape May is America’s oldest seaside resort and a living museum of Victorian charm and architecture. Good seafood, bluegrass and decoys are part of the Baymen’s Seafood & Music Festival in Tuckerton Seaport. Atlantic City was one of the first major resort towns in America and continues to thrive amidst the growth of the gambling industry. Its history is reflected in local resident Joseph Polillo’s historic postcard collection. It’s also the birthplace of Saltwater Taffy and a factory tour shows how the taffy is pulled into its final form. In Springfield, the Brigade of the American Revolution’s detailed historical reenactment of the Springfield Battle, brings hundreds of participants and spectators up close and inside the smoke and fire of the American Revolution. Technology and medicine come alive at Liberty Science Center, in Jersey City, where future generations of scientists are engaged and inspired inside the most visited museum in the state. Thanks to “Save Ellis Island”, the decaying and abandoned structures on America’s island of immigration are being restored and the island’s contribution to public health is revealed. In Lyndhurst, dueling knights and Andalusian stallions parade through the spotlights and entertainment at Medieval Times, a colorful and exotic journey to 11th century Europe. Behind the scenes, the trainers, actors and stuntmen work very hard to keep the spectacle safe. In an area mostly industrial, visitors can take a new approach to art by walking through Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, a place where nature and art intermingle amidst a serious arboretum.

The Borough of Tuckerton
The Borough of Tuckerton sits on the western shore of Barnegat Bay. This story map, developed through a partnership of several programs at Rutgers University, examines how flooding from Hurricane Sandy affected Tuckerton as well as how flooding could change in the future due to sea level rise.
NJADAPT and these Story Maps were developed through partnerships within Rutgers University, including the Bloustein School for Planning and Public Policy, the Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis, the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Rutgers Climate Institute. Funding support for this effort has been provided by the New Jersey Recovery Fund and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Data support has been provided by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Lighthouse Challenge of NJ
Lighthouses and selected museums throughout the state will host the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ weekend on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 19, 2015. Take the challenge, tour the state and visit each participating lighthouse over the weekend to help raise funds for continued lighthouse preservation.
These majestic beacons have played an important role in New Jersey’s history, guarding mariners and protecting our coasts for three centuries. Lighthouses serve as a reminder of American ingenuity while honoring the values of safety and heroism. Visit the lighthouses and museums on the Challenge for an opportunity to step back in time and learn more about our state and nation’s maritime history.
Begin the Challenge at any of the 11 participating New Jersey land-based lighthouses, one museum and two life-saving stations, and purchase a souvenir ($1), which will be proof of your visit at each lighthouse and commemorate your participation in the event. Hours of operation for each lighthouse can be found at participating lighthouse and museum websites and at lhchallengenj.org, njlhs.org, and visitnj.org. You can also find the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ on Facebook where you can communicate with other lighthouse fans. During the weekend, children 11 and under climb free with an adult.
The following lighthouses and museums invite the public to take advantage of this special weekend to support and preserve the maritime history of our state:
Absecon Lighthouse, Barnegat Lighthouse, Barnegat Lighthouse Historical Museum, Cape May Lighthouse, East Point Light, Finns Point Light, Hereford Inlet Light (and Delaware Bay Lights Virtual Tour), Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Navesink/Twin Lights, Sea Girt Lighthouse, Tatham Life Saving Station 35, Tinicum Light, Tucker’s Island Light at Tuckerton Seaport Museum and U.S. Life Saving Station 30.
Night climbs will be offered at Absecon, Cape May, Sandy Hook, Tinicum and Tucker’s Island Light at Tuckerton Seaport.

Aerial footage shows the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, with houses torn from their foundations and boats in streets.
US President Obama has declared a major disaster in New York state after Sandy smashed into the US East Coast.
At least 32 people are reported dead across several US states.
New Jersey-based meteorologist Paul Heppner explained why Sandy had caused such devastation.
