The Sinking of the Kinta S - Texas Parks and Wildlife [Official]
A 155-foot freighter was sunk in the Gulf of Mexico as part of Texas Parks and Wildlife’s artificial reef program. The program is designed to turn oil rigs, retired ships and other hard substances into reef habitat for fish. The Kinta S is the largest ship to be reefed since the 473-foot Texas Clipper was sunk 17 miles off South Padre Island in 2006. For more information check the Texas Parks and Wildlife website at
Special thanks to SEA and University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute for providing video footage of the Kinta S.
Backridge Road, Sabine Pass, Texas
Backridge Road, as I understand it, is the location of the original settlers of Sabine Pass, arriving in 1820-30s, and fought in the Civil War there. They included families such as Courts, Gentz, Johnsons, my own anscestors, as well as other families including, Garners, McGaffeys, McCalls and many others. Devastating hurricanes are part of what made those settlers choose to eventually leave and move more inland to Port Arthur, Port Neches, Groves, and Beaumont. Currenly, Sabine Pass was hard hit by Hurricane Ike in 2008, as well as Hurricane Rita in 2005. the vegetation has clearly not yet fully recovered. My pictures from Sabine Pass are posted in Picasa here:

The road intersects with Dowling Road/So. 8th Street at Keith Lake, runs south for a ways and then dead-ends. This little video is traveling north, returning to the main highway, so you are seeing the north side of the road.
Sabine Pass was hard hit by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Vegetation is coming back, but the signs of the devastation are still there.

2nd Oil Spill In Two Months Closes Houston Ship Channel
According to a report by Reuters, officials said that a barge carrying gasoline capsized and leaked its cargo into the Houston Ship Channel near Bayport, Texas, following a collision on Friday with a 755-foot tanker. US Coast Guard officials said that while salvage divers were on site, it remains unclear how much gasoline spilled out of the beached barge, which partially sank. Reuters reports that it was the second spill in just two months to affect traffic on the 53 mile-long commercial waterway that connects Houston to the Gulf of Mexico. Bayport Channel Collision Response, a group of federal, state and shipping officials organized to clear the wreckage and deal with the spill said that air monitoring systems have detected no 'above actionable levels' of pollution.

7.SOUNDBITE: (English) Jeff Wisener, Executive Officer, Eagle
Well, we like to think that we saved a good ship from a bad government. We're really pleased to have this ship and the German people are really pleased with the way we've taken care of it. When we return to Germany the guys that built the ship and took care of it come and see us and they always let us know how happy they are that we've taken good care of the ship.

You get to see completely new things because even if you go to other operational units you don't get the same sailing experience. So this is something entirely different.
13. Wide shot cadets climbing up the mast ropes
14. Close of trainee cadets climbing the mast rope from above
15. SOUNDBITE: (English), Cadet Aaron Jones
You know it's a real challenge, because I don't know anything about this so I'm pretty unfamiliar. But you know it's manageable. They do a good job teaching us.
16. Medium shot of a cadet climbing onto the mast platform, being directed by instructor
17. Wide shot from below of cadets climbing mast platform
18. Wide shot of cadets sitting around an instructor lecturing on deck
19. Close of an instructor demonstrating gear, pull to show cadets watching in foreground
20. SOUNDBITE: (English), Jeff Wisener, Executive Officer, Eagle
We've got a crew of 60 people on board and they are dedicated hardworking individuals. They all wanted to be here and they're the pick of the litter. So they are the best the Coast Guard has to offer. This professional crew rallies 150 trainees together and creates an incredible program onboard. So it's a lot of fun to watch the crew make things happen here.
21. Wide shot from above, cadets load cargo onboard passing in a brigade from shore
22. Close of a rope rolled decoratively
23. Wide of the deck from above, pan up to cadets along sail line
24. Close of cadets standing on sail line
25. Wide of cadets along sail line as sail is released
26. Medium from above of cadets pulling sail
27. Wide of same, pan up to extended sail
28. SOUNDBITE: (English), Petty Officer William Monroe
(Pointing to top of mast) Right there, at the top of the foremast, is the Coast Guard Ensign. Last time we were underway, I had to replace that, and that's a heck of a climb.

Halifax Explosion
The Halifax Explosion occurred in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on the morning of December 6, 1917. SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship fully loaded with wartime explosives, was involved in a collision with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo in the Narrows, a strait connecting the upper Halifax Harbour to Bedford Basin. Approximately twenty minutes later, a fire on board the French ship ignited her explosive cargo, causing a cataclysmic explosion that devastated the Richmond District of Halifax. Approximately 2,000 people were killed by debris, fires, and collapsed buildings, and it is estimated that nearly 9,000 others were injured. The blast was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons, with an equivalent force of roughly 2.9 kilotons of TNT. In a meeting of the Royal Society of Canada in May 1918, Dalhousie University's Professor Howard L. Bronson estimated the blast at some 2400 metric tons of high explosive.
Mont-Blanc was under orders from the French government to carry her highly explosive cargo overseas to Bordeaux, France. At roughly 8:45 am, she collided at slow speed (1 to 1.5 miles per hour or 1.6 to 2.4 kilometres per hour) with the 'in-ballast' (without cargo) Imo, chartered by the Commission for Relief in Belgium to pick up a cargo of relief supplies in New York. The resultant fire aboard the French ship quickly grew out of control. Without adequate and accessible firefighting equipment, the captain, pilot, officers and men were forced to abandon her within a few minutes following the accident. Approximately 20 minutes later (at 9:04:35 am), Mont-Blanc exploded with tremendous force. Nearly all structures within a half-mile (800 m) radius, including the entire community of Richmond, were completely obliterated. A pressure wave of air snapped trees, bent iron rails, demolished buildings, grounded vessels, and carried fragments of the Mont-Blanc for kilometres. Hardly a window in the city proper survived the concussion. Across the harbour, in Dartmouth, there was also widespread damage. A tsunami created by the blast wiped out the physical community of Mi'kmaq First Nations people that had lived in the Tuft's Cove area for generations. There were a number of casualties including five children who drowned when the tsunami came ashore at Nevin's Cove.

SUMMARY
=======
United States Navy operations during World War I began on April 6, 1917, after the formal declaration of war on the German Empire. The American navy focused on countering enemy U-boats in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, while convoying men and supplies to France and Italy. Because of United States' late entry into the war, her capital ships never engaged the German fleet, and few decisive submarine actions occurred.

SUMMARY
=======
Seattle ( (listen) see-AT-əl) is a seaport city on the West Coast of the United States. It is the seat of King County, Washington. With an estimated 730,000 residents as of 2018, Seattle is the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. According to U.S. Census data released in 2018, the Seattle metropolitan area’s population stands at 3.87 million, and ranks as the 15th largest in the United States. In July 2013, it was the fastest-growing major city in the United States and remained in the Top 5 in May 2015 with an annual growth rate of 2.1%. In July 2016, Seattle was again the fastest-growing major U.S. city, with a 3.1% annual growth rate. Seattle is the northernmost large city in the United States.
The city is situated on an isthmus between Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada–United States border. A major gateway for trade with Asia, Seattle is the fourth-largest port in North America in terms of container handling as of 2015.The Seattle area was inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first permanent European settlers. Arthur A. Denny and his group of travelers, subsequently known as the Denny Party, arrived from Illinois via Portland, Oregon, on the schooner Exact at Alki Point on November 13, 1851. The settlement was moved to the eastern shore of Elliott Bay and named Seattle in 1852, in honor of Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.
Logging was Seattle's first major industry, but by the late 19th century, the city had become a commercial and shipbuilding center as a gateway to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. Growth after World War II was partially due to the local Boeing company, which established Seattle as a center for aircraft manufacturing. The Seattle area developed into a technology center from the 1980s onwards with companies like Microsoft becoming established in the region; Microsoft founder Bill Gates is a Seattleite by birth. Internet retailer Amazon was founded in Seattle in 1994, and major airline Alaska Airlines was founded in SeaTac, Washington, serving Seattle's international airport, Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. The stream of new software, biotechnology, and Internet companies led to an economic revival, which increased the city's population by almost 50,000 between 1990 and 2000.
Seattle has a noteworthy musical history. From 1918 to 1951, nearly two dozen jazz nightclubs existed along Jackson Street, from the current Chinatown/International District to the Central District. The jazz scene nurtured the early careers of Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Ernestine Anderson, and others. Seattle is also the birthplace of rock musician Jimi Hendrix, as well as the origin of the bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters and the alternative rock movement grunge.
