What a spooky bike tunnel!
This tunnel is spooky and intriguing ANY time of the year!
Let me lead you through this tunnel as I walk my bike which I prefer to do for safety reasons. As you watch this video maybe you will understand and agree.
This is THE tunnel of which Tunnel Hill State Trail gets its name. This earth-packed, small chipped rock path is one of my favorite bike trails, and this tunnel is my favorite reason for coming.
This old railroad track originally built in the 1870’s by the Cairo and Vincennes Railroad for the purposes of hauling coal and timber was dismantled and in 1998 was partially opened as a biking and hiking trail.
The railroaders tried to keep the slopes as gentle as possible to conserve fuel and time. That’s why they dug this tunnel, originally 800 feet long, through the hill, instead of going over the top. A portion of the tunnel collapsed in 1929. The remaining 543 foot tunnel is pitch-black and gives meaning to the old adage about “looking for the light at the end of the tunnel”.
The darkness of this tunnel is dis-orienting, and many times there are other bikers or hikers within the tunnel that are not visible upon entering. I’ve tried a bike light but it did not illuminate enough to be helpful. Therefore, I walk my bike through the tunnel with my Iphone light on highest intensity so others can see me.
Biking is great exercise! I highly recommend this rail to trail path. Although the entire trail is 75 miles long, I park my vehicle at the Trailhead in Vienna, Illinois, and bike to Tunnel Hill and then return to my vehicle for just under a 20 mile biking adventure.

Southern Illinois - The land between the rivers in 4k
Southern Illinois lies between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and is a hidden gem in the midwest. This land is surrounded by the Shawanee National forest and has rivers, lakes, forests, hills, and much more. Southern Illinois is the perfect place to go to seek outdoor adventure including hiking, biking, fishing, boating, zip lining, ATV's, climbing, and hunting. I was able to capture the pinnacle of the 2017 solar eclipse on time lapse video while i was there. Some of my favorite spots include Garden of the Gods, tunnel hill bike path, little grand canyon, Rim Rock state park, Cave in Rock state park, cache river, lake Egypt, trig tower, and Bell Smith Springs.
I filmed everything with the DJI Mavic pro in the air and GoPro HERO 5 on the ground.

Cache River State Natural Area
The Cache River State Natural Area at the southern tip of Illinois is home to the northernmost cypress swamps in the United States. Take a canoe and kayak tour of this unique natural area.

Hiking the Grassy Slough Preserve near the Cache River Wetlands Area
In today's hike, we go on more of a short walk around an area being re-established as a wetland by The Nature Conservancy. This area is near the Cache River State Natural Area as well as the Tunnel Hill State Trail. There is adequate parking, signage and educational information present. Check out Belknap and Karnack, two great small little towns around the area.

Directions: Take I-57 South; Exit 30 to IL-146 East towards Vienna; From IL-146, take a RIGHT (South) onto IL-37. Continue straight onto IL-37 South (you will pass the Cache River Wetlands Center); Take a LEFT (East) on IL-169, then a LEFT (North) on E 1st St./Karnak-Belknap Rd. Grassy Slough Overlook will be on your right side.

Illinois' Cache River
From our About Illinois series -- we travel to deep southern Illinois to look at the massive wetlands that are a part of the Cache River area. The Cache River formed after glaciers pushed the Ohio River about 20 miles south, to its current location. When the glaciers melted, the former Ohio River channel, filled with water, creating a swamp of some 200,000 acres. This is the most norther of the southern swamps that dot the southern states. The Cache River looks as if it is the Louisiana Bayou, and also remains unknown -- even to many who were born and raised in Illinois. But it is the home to vast fauna, wildlife, and to trees that were 500 years old when Columbus came to America.
Ideas for a comfortable bike
Does your butt hurt or your hands fall asleep while you’re biking?
You may want to explore options for a more comfortable bike. A bike in the garage that once belonged to one of your kids may not suffice for your current needs. That’s what I discovered.
I love my cruiser bike. It has medium sized tires best suited for most bike paths. Also, I have a modified seat which is WAY more comfortable than the traditional triangular one! In addition, I have L-shaped attachments for my handle bars which gives more options for gripping and lessening of wrist impingement which ultimately results in less hand tingling and numbness.
My favorite paths to bike or the “Rail to Trail” ones found throughout the United States. The one pictured here is near Vienna, IL and is called the Tunnel Hill State Bike Trail.
It’s important to have the right equipment that suits your needs in order to be consistent with exercise. These are the things that work for me.

La Plata, MO, in Northern Missouri, is located on BNSF Railway's Marceline Subdivision at milepost 312.7, part of their Southern Transcon, the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) mainline between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief passenger train stops here twice a day; the eastbound train #4 in the morning and the westbound train #3 in the evening.
The typical BNSF freight train volume is between 50 and 70 trains per 24 hours. There are 2 cameras available.
There is an ATCS layout available, as well as a radio feed for the western part of the BNSF Marceline Sub, listening to AAR road channel 30, 160.560 (also includes Norfolk Southern's Kansas City District, on road channel 22, 160.440):

DC photographer documentary snapshot: underground railroad at the US Capitol
DC photographer documentary news coverage during still photography at the US Capitol for on-location upload of still and clips on deadline for editorial, commercial, diplomatic and social media photography. This is one of the best tests for camera stabilization we can think off - hand-held in moving train with no bracing, gyroscope or mount. And shooting in low light while adjusting for mixed fluorescent lamps. Useful when we shoot and upload on the run in strange places...

On the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, the Vienna [Ohio] Fire Department dedicated a memorial to fallen firefighters and first responders. The memorial contains two steel beams from New York City's World Trade Center. Part 2 of 4.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Speed limits in the United States vary depending on jurisdiction, with 75 to 80 mph (120 to 130 km/h) common in the Western United States and 65 to 75 mph (100 to 120 km/h) common in the Eastern United States. States may also set special speed limits for trucks and night travel along with minimum speed limits. The highest speed limit in the country is 85 mph (140 km/h), which is posted on a single stretch of tollway in rural Texas.
