Turtle Back Zoo Is Back in Action
Just five years ago, there was talk about closing down the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, New Jersey. Luckily, Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, had a vision that the zoo could be something great and would be beneficial to the county. Now the the zoo is thriving!
The zoo costs about $2.7 million to upkeep, but makes $5.1 million in revenue. Now the Turtle Back Zoo is fully equipped with new and improved exhibits of animals, and a brand new waterfront path complete with paddle boats, bridges and beautiful landscaping.
The zoo also has a new treetop adventure course complete with a zip line. The old course was destroyed in Superstorm Sandy, but it was rebuilt and improved for $1.7 million with money from insurance companies, Sandy funds, capital improvements bonds from the county, and Governor Christie's Green Acres Program Grants.DiVincenzo said that it is money well spent in order to rebuild New Jersey's only course of its kind. The treetop course has brought in $500,000 alone since it has opened at the end of last year.
We have people coming from all throughout the state and other parts of the country on visits when they vacation, it's been very successful and people love it. It gives people a chance to get outside and get exercise right here in their own back yard, DiVincenzo stated.

Firefighters and Dog Pursuing 100lb Tortoise in New Jersey
Firefighters and a dog have been combing the woods in northern New Jersey for a 100lb tortoise that doesn’t move at a glacial pace. Sulley got out of a backyard enclosure in Union Township over the Labor Day weekend. Members of the Pattenburg Volunteer Fire Company and their search-and-rescue dog are searching for the tortoise. A friend of Sulley’s owner, Phil Roerig, told NJ.com Sulley covers probably six inches with each step and is quiet.

West Orange, New Jersey - Thomas Edison National Historical Park HD (2016)
Thomas Edison National Historical Park preserves Thomas Edison's laboratory and residence, Glenmont, in Llewellyn Park in West Orange in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. For more than 40 years, the laboratory had a major impact on the lives of people worldwide. Out of the West Orange laboratories came the motion picture camera, improved phonographs, sound recordings, silent and sound movies and the nickel-iron alkaline electric storage battery.
The history of how the site became a National Historical Park is complicated. Edison's home was designated as the Edison Home National Historic Site on December 6, 1955. The laboratory was designated as Edison Laboratory National Monument on July 14, 1956. On September 5, 1962, the 21-acre (85,000 m2) site containing the home and the laboratory were designated the Edison National Historic Site and overseen by the National Park Service.[2] On March 30, 2009, it was renamed Thomas Edison National Historical Park, adding Thomas to the title in hopes to relieve confusion between the Edison sites in West Orange and Edison, New Jersey. Following extensive renovations of the laboratory complex, there was a grand reopening on October 10, 2009.
