North Entrance: Apollo Beach, Turtle Mound and Historic Eldora
The north entrance from New Smyrna Beach is the road less travelled, though it offers diverse recreation and historical sites. Parking is prohibited except in designated lots. On busy weekends or holidays, arrive early.
Surf-fishers are first to arrive (Lots 2-4). Near-shore sandbars there corral fish on outgoing tides, giving you a leg up when casting into rip currents between sandbars.
Near the entrance, visit Turtle Mound, a prehistoric archaeological site where native Timucuan Indians discarded their shells for centuries. Turtle is the largest shell midden in the country, 600 feet long and rising 50 feet. A viewing platform offers sweeping panoramas of dunes, beaches and the islands of the Indian River Lagoon.
Kayaks, paddle-boards and canoes can be launched here, or at several other designated areas.
A few miles south, take the turnoff to Eldora and drive slowly through subtropical tree hammocks to the Eldora State House, once the center of a small agricultural community. The State House has been restored with a museum showcasing the history of the area.
Paddling in the lagoon here is paradise. I love to snake between islands in search of oyster bars and clam beds where I can cast a line in the hunt for tailing redfish.

Sugar Mill Ruins ~ New Smyrna Beach FL ~ By Drone
May 27, 2014 ~ The New Smyrna Sugar Mill Ruins (also known as the Cruger and DePeyster Sugar Mill) is a historic site in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, at 600 Old Mission Road. On August 12, 1970, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
In 1830 a steam sugar and saw mill were erected at this site. 5 years later the mills and other buildings were destroyed by Indians. The site was further altered by soldiers who were garrisoned there to keep an eye over the Seminoles.
