Ski lift malfunction at popular Tussey mountain resort 'leaves 20 people pinned by chairs'
A ski lift at a popular resort has malfunctioned leaving 20 people pinned in their chairs, it has been reported.
There are reports of multiple injuries after the incident on Tussey Mountain, in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, after emergency services were called to the lift.
But the company has already been forced to apologise after using the hashtag #sorry in a statement on the incident.
Tussey Mountain resort said on their Twitter page: Having difficulties with the chairlift... we are working on it now. May not be able to run it today. Stay tuned... #sorry.
Visitors to the resort were angered after the statement appeared to come across as insincere.
One Twitter user, wrote in reply: My husband, your employee is sitting here in the ER. So is another employee... Sorry??? How about you show some concern for the employees and other people injured???
Another added: They hashtag something when their chairlift collapsed and people are hurt. #noclue.
It's believed several chairs slipped on the cable, causing them to collide with each other during the incident.
Six ambulances, police officers and multiple fire engines were on the scene.
State College Police confirmed that five people are injured, and some skiers are still being rescued from the lift.
Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Tussey Mountain later apologised for their initial statement, writing: At the time the office was notified of a lift malfunction and when this original tweet was made, we were under the impression it was solely a lift issue and there were no injuries.
We apologize to anyone who was offended by our hashtag.
The temperature on the mountain is just 1C.
Tussey Mountain later added in a statement on their Twitter account: There has not been a collapse.
Our ski patrol, EMS and staff are working on evacuating anyone on the lift, off. But all chairs are still on the lift, towers still standing.
Still waiting on official word.
Today marks the opening weekend for the resort, which has been posting updates of the state of the ski slope on its Instagram page.
Earlier this week, an update on the account read: Cold temperatures are finally here! The snowmakers have been working hard and will continue to make snow.
December 16-17 we will be OPENING! 9am - 5pm both days!!!
SNOW TUBING MONTAGE – Penn State Students Take on TUSSEY MOUNTAIN – [26]
So as you all probably can tell school has started up again, and so as a result I have not had as much time as I would like to make and edit videos for YouTube. Even still, I continue to try and document fun adventures and moments in my life, and this was definitely no exception. Towards the beginning of the semester me and a couple friends from school decided to take a trip to Tussey Mountain PA, a snow tubing and skiing place nearby State College, PA. Knowing it would be fun, I decided to bring my Go Pro in the hopes of creating a snow-tubing montage of our adventure. Hope you guys enjoy!!!

5 Hurt in Ski Lift Malfunction at Central Pennsylvania Mountain
5 Hurt in Ski Lift Malfunction at Central Pennsylvania Mountain
A ski lift malfunctioned Saturday morning at a small mountain near State College in central Pennsylvania, injuring five skiers and stranding others, according to NBC affiliate WJAC.
Initial reports indicated that a portion of the lift at Tussey Mountain in Boalsburg, Centre County, had collapsed sometime around 10 a.m., but the resort tweeted at noon that there was no collapse.
The extent of their injuries were not immediately known, but authorities said they were all minor in nature. Other skiers were still stuck on the lift at 12 p.m., according to WJAC.
Despite the lift incident, Tussey Mountain officials said on their Facebook page that some of the mountain would remain open.
It is unclear how many skiers remain stranded on the lift, but a WJAC reporter tweeted shortly after noon that rescue operations were still underway to get the remaining people off the broken down lift.

5 Injured, Dozens Stranded In Pennsylvania Ski Lift Accident
SKI LIFT HORROR Tussey mountain resort ski lift accident leaves five injured and dozens ‘crushed’ by chairs
Emergency crews rescued those stranded on the lift at Tussey Mountain in Pennsylvania using ropes
SKIERS were crushed after a ski lift malfunctioned sending chairs slamming into each other at a resort in Pennsylvania.
Emergency crews were called to the scene in Tussey Mountain, Boalsburg, where five people were reportedly injured.
Onlookers reported that the lift had stopped before the chairs slid into one another leaving skiers crushed together.
Shocking images show how at least five ski chairs rammed into each other - trapping several skiers and snowboarders.
Ropes were used to evacuate those trapped and those hurt received medical attention for minor injuries
At least two employees are believed to be among the injured.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Five people were injured at a Pennsylvania ski resort Saturday when a chair on the ski lift slid backward into the chair behind it, setting off a chain reaction that involved a total of five chairs, officials said.
Around 10 a.m., a malfunction on a section of the chair lift cut the first car loose, sending it sliding down the rope into another chair and causing a chain reaction that sent four slipped chairs sliding into a fifth, the Tussey Mountain ski resort said in a statement.
The State College, Pennsylvania, police said there were five minor injuries in the pile-up, none life-threatening.
We take the safety of our guests very seriously, and are saddened to learn that there were non-life threatening injuries as a result of this accident, a statement on the Tussey Mountain Facebook page said.
Police said it took 90 minutes to evacuate the chair lift, including people who were stranded aloft when the lift was stopped.
Tussey Mountain, which closed after the mishap, said the lift had been inspected by state safety officials and had received a passing grade.
[W]e have begun taking the necessary steps to ensure a situation like this will never happen again, Tussey Mountain's statement said. We have contacted the manufacturer of the lift to diagnose what caused the malfunction, as well as the appropriate state agencies prior to re-opening.
