PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO - A Giant TOURIST TRAP?!?
We're staying on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen and wondering...is this place just a giant tourist trap??
►Learn Spanish like us!
It's the start of our Playa del Carmen 2018 trip and we are looking for some beach fun and good times on 5th Avenue. We didn't know what to expect in this Quintanaroo state, especially after visiting Tulum earlier in the week. What we found in our Playa del Carmen vlog was pretty unexpected ... LOTS of tourist traps, repeated scams, and a little more sargazo on the beach than we would have liked.
But that's not going to get us down! We continue to explore along the Playa del Carmen beach and Quinta Avenida as we enjoy the gorgeous weather and all that the Riviera Maya has to offer. We also share what to do in Playa del Carmen where you WON'T fall into a tourist trap.
One of our favorite parts of the trip was staying at Hotel Lunata. We recommend it if you're planning a trip here. It's right on 5th avenue and just a block from the beach. Plus, AC...YASS!
Coming up, we visit the island of Cozumel, go snorkeling in the clear ocean waters, and head back to Ajijic....only to pack up again and continue traveling in Mexico!!

Nado en Cenote
Swimming in Cenote Dos Ojos. Location between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, Quintana Roo, México.
Dos Ojos is a flooded cave system located south of Playa Del Carmen and north of Tulum, on the Caribbean coast, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The exploration of Dos Ojos began in 1986 and has never stopped since. The documented underwater extend of the cave system is at least 61 km.
Dos Ojos has remains in the top 10 longest underwater cave systems in the world. Dos Ojos contains the deepest known cave passage in Quintana Roo with 118 meters / 396 feet of depth located at The Cenote Pit.
The name Dos Ojos is Spanish for two eyes, and refers to two neighboring cenotes which connect into a very large cavern zone shared between the two. These two cenote appear like two large eyes into the underground.
Water temperature is 24 to 25 °C (77 Fahrenheit) throughout the year and the maximum depth near the Dos Ojos Cenotes is approximately 10 m (33 feet). The water is exceptionally clear.

I wanted to do something different for my Birthday this year, and after going on a cruise for the first time last April, and really enjoying it, I decided to to take a cruise again this April, but I planned it so my Birthday would actually take place while on the cruise. I learned last year that cruises depart out of Galveston, TX. This is only about 1 hour south of Houston, TX, which is where I live, so it couldn’t be any more convenient. After a good experience with Carnival Cruise Lines last year, I decided to book it with Carnival again, but this time I decided to try out the Carnival Breeze since I had already tried the Carnival Freedom last year.
Our first of three destinations was Cozumel, Mexico! Since I visited Cozumel on last years cruise as well, I wanted to make sure I tried a different Excursion this time around. So after chatting back and forth with my friend Nikki that was going with me, we settled on Xcaret Park in Playa Del Carmen. I wanted to try this place out because there were so many activities available to do! As it turns out, you need much more than a single day to accomplish all the available activities at Xcaret Park. The map of the park has over 60 different activities and as you can see in this video, we only had enough time to do about 5 of them over a span of about 6-7 hours. I definitely would love to go back sometime, and now that I know how the park operates, I’d like to take more cameras so I can shoot an even better video than I did this time around.
If you want to know more about this park, you can visit their website However, if you’re planning to visit Xcaret Park while on a cruise, I would suggest booking it through the cruise line to make sure the timeframes coincide with the timing of the ship arriving and departing from the port.
If you’d like to know what cameras I used to shoot this with, for the intro and outro, the time lapse was shot with my Sony X3000. The first half of the video was all shot on my cell phone, the Google Pixel XL 2. (Google, I’m planning to shoot a lot more videos with this phone, so if you’re looking to sponsor anyone, I’m interested :) For the second half of the video, where we were swimming the river, Nikki was shooting with my GoPro Hero 4 Black and I was shooting with the GoPro Hero 5 Black. Shoutout to Nikki for being willing to tote a camera around for much of this trip, I actually used more of her river footage than my own.
Below is a list of all the equipment that was used to film this video or featured in it:
Google Pixel XL 2 -
GoPro Hero 4 Black -
GoPro Hero 5 Black -
GoPro The Handler -
Sony X3000 -

Escapade in Cancun - Playa del Carmen & Cenote Dos Ojos(Tulum)

The Grand Playa Del Carmen Taco Tour
I went to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico in search of some tacos. I found them. I destroyed them. Now the iron throne is mine.

The resort is conveniently located in town and on the beach. Service was fantastic. The open-plan lobby and cafe were nice touches. Only be ready to take shelter when the rain blows in with little warning.

Private Blue Venado Beach Club Wedding | Playa del Carmen Mexico
Enjoy the lovely portraits of the beautiful Alexis and the charming Julien in our blog:
This gorgeous bride and groom had a Private Beach Club Wedding at Blue Venado Beach Club in Playa del Carmen Mexico. With will over 100 guests and the mix of languages and cultures from Alexis’s US family and Julien’s loved ones from France, it was an energy packed day well celebrated at a beachfront wedding. Added to that a collection of adorable children kept us and the whole wedding group entertained. Julien and Alexis were kind enough to share some of their reflections on the day.
“I took Lex there on a vacation for her to see Chichen Itza, Tulum and a couple of cenotes and we had an incredible time. The memory of this trip and the cuisine and culture of Mexico were ultimately what made us decide on a Private Beach Club Wedding at Blue Venado Beach Club in Playa del Carmen.”
“We’re an international couple. Ultimately, at least half of our guests would have to travel if we chose to get married in either of our home countries. That’s how we decided to have a private destination wedding in the best place to get married, Playa del Carmen Mexico.”
“We went back to the Playa del Carmen to scout out venues. That is when we met Polly at Del Sol Photography. No joke, it played a big part in finalizing our decision. Absolutely no regrets!”
Del Sol: You had a LOT of adorable children be a part of your wedding day at Blue Venado Beach Club!
“The kids are our nieces and nephews and all of them are indeed gorgeous! Giving them “jobs” of flower girls and ring bearer was also a lot of fun. Seeing how seriously they took the role and how much effort they spent on finding the right outfit!”
“Now that our multicultural wedding is over and all those kids who don’t talk the same language had a chance to meet, they’re all asking news about each other. Super cute! My nephew from France told me he wants to move to New York and live with us because I’m the best uncle in the world and things like that are worth everything we did to make sure they’d be there with us.”
Del Sol: What are the moments of the day that really stood out for you?
“We both loved the energy exuding from our guests, the venue Blue Venado Beach Club, the music and everything else! It was exactly what we hoped for! People who we love, from all around the world, from all religion and all sexuality, gathered together and gave us nothing but love and positive vibes! Everyone was dancing and having fun, it was beautiful to witness.”
“The first dance was our first moment as husband and wife. Everything slowed down a few minutes, we could finally enjoy everything around us and reflect on how we got there. I told Lex: “We made it!””
Del Sol: How was your experience with the Del Sol Team?
“Matt and Polly were both AMAZING! From the moment we met Polly for the first time, to the phone call with Matt, all the way to the wedding and the TTD, everything was perfect. The pictures we’ve seen so far are beautiful, exactly what we hoped for and more! What meant a lot to both of us is how much you guys cared to make sure we were having a good time. You guys getting us shots of tequila when you saw how stressed I was after the fail attempt to get group photos for example…”
Del Sol: Why did you choose Blue Venado Beach Club for Private Beach Club Wedding in Playa del Carmen, Mexico?
“The moment we saw Blue Venado Beach Club with our own eyes, we both knew we had found what we wanted…. the privacy, space, the whole scene is gorgeous... it is a stunning destination wedding”
“Mari was our main point of contact at Blue Venado Beach Club and she did a fantastic job putting our vision into life and finding great vendors for everything we asked. We had a good feeling when we met her and were not disappointed.”
Del Sol: How did you feel about safety in Mexico, considering the travel advisories?
“Mexico was a controversial destination wedding for some of our guests. Don’t pay attention to the negative press. Bad things happen everywhere all the time… Visit there and experience it for yourself.”
“Honestly, I’d tell anyone considering it to just do it. Listen to your gut! If you looked into Riviera Maya in the first place, there’s a part of you who already knows it’s an amazing destination for a wedding. If some guests decide not to show up (which isn’t unusual for a destination wedding), that’s on them, not you. As we say in France, “C’est la vie!””

The Most Luxurious Beachfront Residence in Playa del Carmen
CASA SAANEN | PLAYA DEL CARMEN RIVIERA MAYA
This oceanfront residence is located on the Mexican Riviera in the Playa del Carmen gated community of Playacar Phase 1, only
five minutes walking distance from Playa’s famous 5th Avenue.
This luxurious residence of 26,000 sf. of meticulously-built construction has wide-open ocean views from three levels. It is built on a double-width lot that has more than double the usual depth, which allows the house to be set back from the beach, giving the owners all of the views, but much more privacy, than any
another lot in Playacar Phase 1. This contemporary-style home has seven bedrooms with private baths, three of which open onto a huge balcony overlooking the ocean. It has spacious living areas, including a dining room seating twelve, a modern kitchen with high-end appliances, and the highest rooftop entertainment terrace of any private home in Playa del Carmen. It has two bars,
one adjoining the living room and the other on the pool deck. There is a comfortable TV room, a large gym, an office with an outdoor
porch, a nanny’s quarters with full bathroom and kitchen, a four-car
garage, and vast mechanical space in the extensive tunnel system below the house. The entrance to the residence is across from
ancient Mayan ruins in a lush protected park. One enters the residence by means of a suspended wooden bridge over a spectacular deep pool made to resemble a Mayan cenote surrounded by palm trees and lavish gardens. Entering the home, one’s eyes are immediately drawn to the ocean view over an infinity-edge pool towards Cozumel Island and the passing cruise ships and ferries. This house is without question the finest private oceanfront residence in Playa del Carmen, and would be in the running for the best on the entire Mayan Riviera. Quite simply,
it is in a class by itself.
