Plymouth Thunderstorm 27th May 2017
A montage of short video clips (handheld on a compact camera) of the severe thunderstorm over Plymouth UK, during the early hours of Saturday May 27th 2017.
Most of the lightning was of the sheet lightning type, but there were a couple of very close cloud-to-ground strikes. At its peak, the storm was producing 125 lightning strikes a minute. The UK Met Office estimates there were over 38,000 lightning bolts during this storm. The storm lasted for over 2 hours with almost constant thunder and lightning. It came from the south (English channel) and gradually moved over the SW peninsula towards Wales.
One of the most severe storms I've seen in the UK - more like what you might expect to see in the central US, Africa or Australia!

Plymouth UK firework championship setting up (2nd day) - waves crashing on pier all day
Recorded on 15th August 2012 at Plymouth for UK championship (2nd day).
No winner was announced in the 2012 British Fireworks Championships after strong winds disrupted the second night of the two-day event in Plymouth.
Three teams performed on Tuesday night, with another three taking part in the competition on Wednesday.
But organisers said they did not judge any of the Wednesday round in the interests of fairness. Reduced displays did go ahead.

Sailing the UK coast Dartmouth to Plymouth, a boat sinks and more strong winds - SV Sea Cactus
Sailing the UK coastline in our small bavaria 30 cruiser, the weather is being a right pain, with various weather warnings for wind and rain putting a real strain on the schedule and planning to get west, we try to take the small windows of better weather and punch out west to plymouth.

You last joined us in Dartmouth when we hid from the worst of the weather, and this seems to be a reoccurring theme this week, unfortunately we have to deal with what weather were felt with, and with the rain lashing down we opted for a few nights in Dartmouth, I didn’t want to risk putting the crew off sailing by taking them out in the miserable rain and westerly winds.
Dartmouth is quite a nice place, Best if you have a dinghy to cross the river as the ferry can become expensive, and also a dinghy is great to explore further up the river if you're so inclined.
We saw a boat sat on a concrete ramp while out in town and didn’t think too much of it, but upon returning the tide had come in and sank it due to the angle it was tied up at.
A boat even tied up onto of it, we felt bad for the owner and collected a few floating things before sticking the hatches back on. The boat we later found out was ok in the end and did dry out eventually!
The weather was really starting to impact our schedule with a week already drifting by, a less than favourable forecast was on the horizon followed by more force 8 gales and rain. The forecast was a 5-7 with 8 at times, but on many forecasts was f6-7 worse, we decided to challenge ourselves with this one and head to plymouth, beating into it!
Coming out of Dartmouth we saw some dolphins which delayed getting the sails up as we all marvelled at them swimming with the boat, its often said this can be a good omen for the trip unfortunately i don’t think that was the case
We pressed on pass salcombe where we did think about pulling in, but decided against it, the waves built up and the wind increased further which made it difficult to film anything past salcombe, that and looking after the crew with copious amounts of ginger biscuits to combat mal de mer were the priority, even trying to make a cup of tea was low on the list with the reluctance to go below, Lunch was made on deck and consisted of dry bagels with some hastily thrown cheese on them
so we all huddled behind the spray hood and kept out the worst of the weather, while the waves broke over the bow and washed right over the spray hood - a first for us on our boat!

Incredible lightning storm approaching Plymouth England 27/05/17 Part 1
Footage of approaching storm. Lasted for approx 2 hours. Have a short clip also of close strike to house next door but camera doesn't pick up the strike for some reason.

Epic Thunderstorm In July 2014. The UK experienced widespread thunderstorm activity. This particular storm was very large and lasted 3 hours and at its peak was lighting up the sky nearly every second. The Footage was taken from the Isles of Scilly. Plymouth UK Thunderstorm 27th May 2017 (GoPro footage)
A follow-up to the video I published here:
In the early hours of Saturday 27th May 2017, a cold front from the Atlantic converged with a 'Spanish Plume' from the south. A combination of some other atmospheric conditions gave rise to the development of a powerful MCS (multicellular cluster storm) system over South West England. For several hours, this combination of elevated cells produced a high frequency of lightning strikes. There were localised bursts of heavy rain and hail. Additionally there were some isolated cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. A more technical writeup of the storm can be read here:
I had a GoPro Hero3+ clamped onto the outside windowsill pointing towards the sky. I will admit that the video footage is not brilliant - the GoPro struggles with low light conditions. At times, the visibility of the storm was reduced by heavy precipitation. I've tried to edit the content slightly, to adjust the white balance and improve its quality. Hopefully this set of video clips gives a good overview of this historic storm. The footage relates to the point when the storms had moved over my current location and were starting to move away to the north, in the direction of Wales. I was encouraged to upload the content by a friend, who said it might be good for relaxation / meditation / autonomous sensory etc!
