Travel London, United Kingdom - British Pubs
Experience what it's like in a typical British Pub.
There are pubs around every corner in London, most of them with illustrious history. We are going to the Blue Posts Pub located in Central London. The image of a traditional British pub has not changed much over the years: the wooden interior, the fireplace and a warm, cozy, homely atmosphere.
If you are a literature buff, you will think you have been to the Dickensian or a Shakespearean world. The pub is actually an abbreviation of the term public house. The word was coined during Victorian times, but the concept has been around since the Romans and their taverns.
I am Gabby and I work as a barmaid here. First I would say the atmosphere because most of the British pubs, they are very old, so the interior is quite old. So, that is what the difference is between the more modern bars and the British pub.
Pubs were meeting places for professionals and artists alike. We do not do food, and the drink, that would be the bitters, the real ales. I am Peter Halpin, showing you London.

United Kingdom, Great Britain, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales... CONFUSED???
The United Kingdom, Great Britain, England, or the British Isles: Which one should you use, and what’s the difference between them? And how do Ireland, Scotland, and Wales relate to all of this? It really is confusing, but in this video I will explain exactly what each name refers to, and what belongs where, so you’ll have no more confusion! We’ll also talk about the relationship of Northern Ireland to the UK, as well as the Crown dependencies – the Isle of Man, Jersey, and Guernsey. I’ll also touch upon identity issues such as the proportion of people who feel ‘British’ as opposed to just ‘English’, ‘Welsh’, ‘Scottish’, or ‘Irish’. This one is a really huge lesson, full of facts and interesting trivia about the differences between the countries that make up the United Kingdom. If you learn everything in this lesson and take the quiz at you will truly be an expert on the geography and people of the UK!
NEXT, watch some of my other videos about life and customs in England and the UK:

TRANSCRIPT
Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at the geography of the United Kingdom and we're also going to look at some culture related to all the different terms we use to describe Great Britain, England... All these different words, when do we use them? So we're going to break it down and look at that.
Let's start with the name. The official name is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but often we just say UK because it's such a long country name, so we just say UK. I drew a map. My map is not to scale. And I tried my best, but it was hard to do it with the pens on the board, so we're going to show you a correct map. We've got England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. And the dotted line shows where Northern Ireland ends. This part is part of the United Kingdom; this part is not. More on that later.
So, the UK is a sovereign state or we could say a sovereign country. This means that they make all their own laws, and they govern themselves. So, the UK is a sovereign state or a sovereign country. But the reason that's confusing is that we... When we're talking or when we're describing a place in the world, we talk about Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland as being countries. So, you think: Is...? If the UK is a country, are Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland also a country? Well, they are, but they don't make their own laws. So, we have a word for it and we can call them constituent countries. We can say England is a constituent country of the United Kingdom. We can say Scotland is a constituent country of the United Kingdom, etc. Okay.
Now it gets more confusing because when we're talking about the UK, we can say it's made up of those countries - Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We can also say it's made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is this land mass, this island shape, here; and Northern Ireland is part of the land mass, the island of Ireland. So, if we put this bit and this bit together, we get the United Kingdom.
Great Britain has three constituent countries. Remember, this is Great Britain, Scotland, England, and Wales make up Great Britain. Britain... Now we're getting smaller. This is Britain, England, and Wales. So, I can say: I'm from Britain, because I'm from... I was born about here in London, so I can say: I'm from Britain.
Now, we have another term called The British Isles. The British Isles is a geographic term, so we use it to describe a place on the map. And the British Isles would include everything we see here. Actually, perhaps except these islands. These islands are called Jersey and Guernsey, and they're closer to France. But the British Isles could describe everything here in a geographic sense. And I wasn't able to draw all the islands, but there's actually over 6,000 islands up in Scotland, some down here as well. So, many, many islands.
But the trouble with that term, to say the British Isles is that some people in Ireland don't like that term to describe... To include them because it makes it sound like Ireland, it's British, even though Ireland is independent. Ireland is a sovereign country by itself. So some people object to calling this the British Isles.
If you do object to calling it the British Isles, you can say the North Atlantic-I can never say this word-Archipelago. Archipelago. And this means, like, collection of islands. And the place in the world is in the North Atlantic. Right. […]

Lake District, The Complete Tour, England
The Lake District in northwest England is a very popular holiday destination, famous for lakes, forests, mountains and quaint villages. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. We are staying in Bowness-on-Windermere for several days of fun excursions.
Click to Subscribe
our tour arranged by:
Four of the top activities are exploring the towns, taking boat rides, do a little nature walking, and take a driving tour of the region to see the other nearby lakes and quaint villages. Most of our program takes place during a van tour of the lakes that visits 10 different lakes, including Brotherswater, Derwent Water, Grasmere, Ullswater and Windermere. On the van ride we also take a walk in the village of Grasmere, famous for William Wordsworth. You will be amazed by Castlerigg Stone Circle, 4500 years old, one of the area’s historic gems. Then we take a lunch stop in Keswick, whilst exploring the traditional Lakeland market town. We also do a Lake Cruise, enjoying uninterrupted views of the Lakeland fells from Derwent Water.
You can pick from a variety of kinds of excursion boats on Lake Windermere: you can have a one-hour cruise or go for an all-day expedition. You could enjoy a cruise with dinner, there are hydrofoils, rowboats or sailboats for rent -- all kinds of nautical activities exist here on the shores of Lake Windermere.
By the end of the 18th century the region was already becoming popular with visitors and this has steadily grown to the point where today nearly 20 million annual visitors enjoy the beauties of this special place. This huge amount of tourists can be a challenge to deal with in your visit, but you will find the beauties of the natural landscapes make your efforts quite worthwhile. In this show we have useful suggestions to help your planning.
Summer season is obviously most crowded and brings with it the best weather with least chances of rain, so take your chances, but we suggest the shoulder season, like the visit shown here which was during May, a perfect time to visit. We never felt inconvenienced by any crowds. After all, facilities like hotels and restaurants are able to handle the peak crowds of summer, so if you are here in May, with proper reservations at a decent hotel, you will have no problems. Of course the summer is when everybody wants to be here but we find that May is ideal.
You’ll need to spend at least several nights in the area this to really get a chance to see the charming countryside, explore some towns, go shopping, and perhaps enjoy some fine dining. This is actually two towns joined together as one: Windermere is a mile to the north and Bowness-on-Windermere lies along the shores of the lake. Each center has its cluster of shops and restaurants, but the main focus is down at Bowness, which has most of the hotels and that special setting along the water.
The town of Bowness is a good base of operations for heading out to see the other lakes in the district and enjoying some day tours as we will be doing.
Windermere is the largest and the longest lake in the British Isles, about 10 miles long with a 24-mile circumference, and there are several villages along the shores of the lake. We see Lake Windermere the easy way, on a boat ride.
We are travelling in mid-May and ran into some great weather. And actually it’s quite pleasant the temperature here is in the low 70s there is a slight breeze on the lake but not terribly windy. a most pleasant day.
The temperature is pleasant enough that it’s comfortable to sit outside, After all you want the view -- that’s why we’re enjoying this boat ride, to have a look at this charming rolling countryside along the shores of the lake of Windermere.
Some of us decided to get off the boat at Ambleside which is one of the main small towns here in the Lake Country. There's a level nature trail from the boat dock to Ambleside town passing first through an open meadow with some Roman ruins visible, and then along beautiful stream. We also get to see the sheep frolicking around. The walk only took about the walk only took about 30 minutes.
We came upon foundations of ancient Roman buildings. From such forts the Romans could control hundreds of square miles. the army was staffed in part by Roman soldiers and mercenaries, some of them from Yugoslavia. Roman rule began in Britain back in A.D. 43. A massive army of 40,000 soldiers quickly conquered most of the island and Romans remained in control for the next 300 years.
When the path follows along the stream it becomes so beautiful, lined with wildflowers, that you feel you stepped into some kind of movie or dream. Those few minutes became one of the top highlights of the three-week tour of the British Isles. A simple walk through the woods could provide a transcendental experience.

British Life And Culture
In this film we learn about British Life and Culture. We study London's Traffic and Public Transport and then take a look at Multicultural Britain and it's history. We review its Political System and learn how to play cricket during Leisure Time.
British Cultural & Social Etiquette
1. Saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ is considered good manners; it is considered rude if you don't use them.
2. Being punctual is important. The British consider it rude and impolite if you turn up late for an appointment. Call even if you will be 5 minutes later than agreed.
3. Queueing is a unique part of the British culture. Violating a queue is considered extremely impolite, so never push ahead in a line.
4. Hugging, kissing and touching are usually reserved for family members and very close friends.
5. Having an argument in public is considered bad manners.
6. Talking about money is considered bad manners.
7. Tipping is not expected in the UK, but is much appreciated. You can tip if you are happy with the service.
8. Standing too close to someone is rude. The British like a certain amount of personal space.
9. Asking personal questions about salary, relationship status, weight or age is frowned upon.

The British village revival- escape from the city
A growing trend from a move away from Britain’s big urban areas and into rural areas, namely villages has been identified in a report released today.
The Housing Futures report released by Strutt & Parker shows that more than 20% of people planning on moving home would like to live in a village, making it easily the most popular type of location, compared to 14% for a market town and only 12% for either a big city or a suburb.
And it’s not just those wishing to sell up from their city lives to buy in a village setting, with the report showing a significant increase in respondents looking for rental accommodation. 10% of those wanting to move to a village would live in a professionally managed private rental unit, up from 1% in 2013.
The South East, South West and North East are the three leading destinations for people who are intending to move in the next five years. London’s strong economy and housing market will have a direct effect on the South East, which will attract 29% of those intending to move out of the capital as people look for more affordable, spacious accommodation, while also being able to commute to well-paid jobs in London. The South West’s appeal as a lifestyle and retirement location is set to continue attracting moves from the South East (12%) and London (8%). With increased government investment in the Northern Powerhouse, the North West is likely to retain 69% of those who already live in the region. Any outside buyers are most likely to be from the North East or Ireland (both 5%). London will experience the lowest retention rate of any regional (35%) with more sellers planning to cash in on their property equity by moving out of the capital.
Ease of access is an important issue for respondents intending to move to a village, with 60% wanting to be able to walk to shops, 48% to local transport and 45% to medical facilities. Broadband and mobile connections are also seen as essential to rural life. Access to broadband was a key factor for 49%, while 38% highlighted mobile connectivity. The shift away from cities is being driven by people looking for neighbourhood safety (86%), and space between neighbours (58%), as well as for a strong community feel (48%).
The report show that while existing research would suggest cities have the upper hand over villages - by the mid-century there will be approximately 65 million people living in Britain’s cities, compared to just 8 million in rural areas - as the urban trend has gathered pace in the UK, a number of negative traits have begun to appear such as a rise in inadequate housing provision, urban sprawl and increased pollution.
According to DEFRA, in 2013/14, the UK saw net internal migration of 60,000 people to predominantly rural areas in England. It is a trend that has been positive every year since 2001. But this reverse migration is not to a traditional rural environment. The influence that technology is having on shopping, communications and working habits is helping to transform villages and the type of people who want to live in them.
Technology is helping to change the rural economy, which plays a key role in creating jobs and prosperity. England’s rural economy now accounts for £210 billion of economic output and hosts over 25% of all registered businesses. New companies are thriving in rural locations, including hi-tech manufacturing, food processing, the service sector, retail and power supply (in the form of renewables).
Strutt & Parker defines a village as a settlement that has between 3,000 and 10,000 inhabitants. This equates to around 14% of the population in England and Wales, approximately 10% of the population in Scotland and 15% of the population in Northern Ireland.
