LT FAWMA Statue Unveiling Pt1
The statue, part of an outdoor exhibit at the US Army Women's Museum, pays tribute to the women who have served in the Army for the past 10 to 20 years. The museum staff envisioned a full-size figure that would draw attention to the contributions of the modern Army female warrior. The staff provided a conceptual image that an artist in New York then created as a statue. It was paid for by contributions made to the Friends of the Army Women's Museum Association, the 501 c(3) non-profit organization that supports the museum.
A great amount of care and thought was put in to the creation of the statue. Here are a few points about it:
The statue is a First Lieutenant (1LT). Her name is FAWMA (which is the acronym for Friends of the Army Women's Museum Association). The 1LT will have served in the Army for 3-6 years...she would have entered service in the post-9/11 period. She is youthful; she reflects the energy of a young Soldier. Because of her rank she exudes the confidence of a leader, but also has much to learn. It is the Non-commissioned officer (NCO) who will teach her what she needs to know, as will the Warrant Officers she serves with. Field Grade Commissioned Officers will mentor her.
She is wearing equipment that Soldiers use while in a field training environment or while deployed. She has combat gear such as a rucksack, water hydration system, helmet and protective vest.
Her patches were selected to represent the service of the Active Army and our citizen-Soldiers—Reserve and Guard. The patches indicate that she served a combat tour with the 1st Infantry Division and is currently assigned to the 94th Training Division (FS). [The 94th Infantry Division was activated in 1942 in Michigan. In 1967 it was re-designated the 94th Army Reserve Command.]
The Fort Lee Equal Opportunity Officer, Sergeant First Class Williams modeled the first time with the gear she had worn in her last deployment to Iraq. Photographs of the model for 1LT FAWMA were examined and she was inspected many times. The CASCOM Command Sergeant Major and several others inspected her uniform and equipment to ensure it was properly worn. An officer and NCO from Fort Hamilton, with the assistance of the Fort Hamilton Museum curator visited the artist, Alex from Kodiak Studios in Brooklyn, New York.
The statue will be put on a pedestal in front of the museum. It is placed so that it can be easily seen from A Avenue. She stands juxtaposition to the museum's statue of Pallas Athene, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War.

???? [Description]:
America produced more than 300,000 planes during WWII. Ninety percent of which were delivered from the factory to the armed services by women. At the time, these pilots were contractors who received no service-connected benefits despite their passion to serve our nation and contribute to the war effort.
Seventy-three years later, Defense Contract Management Agency's military pilots continue to carry on the proud tradition of delivering aircraft to the warfighter. We commemorate Women’s Equality Day on August 26. It is a good time to look toward the past to honor the countless women who served important roles in America’s victories, and also toward the future, as we continue to pursue equality for all.
In this video, we visited the U.S. Army Women's Museum at U.S. Army Fort Lee to speak with Dr. Francoise Bonnell about these heroes.
