US Highway 1 - Mile Marker 0 Zero (Key West, Florida)
Apparently one of the top things to do in Key West according to trip Advisor lol! The infamous starting point of US Hwy 1!
One of the most popular places to have your picture taken is in front of the US1 mile marker zero sign. Every day, hundreds, if not thousands of visitors, smile for the camera and commemorate visiting the southernmost point of the United States.
Stretching from upper Maine to Key West, US 1, known locally as the Overseas Highway, is a 2,369 interstate that connects most major cities in the eastern U.S.
A photograph here is proof that you have made it to the end of the road, escaped normal life on the mainland, and know the difference between too much work and too much play.
Interesting note: the mile marker zero sign, the green and while sign in the picture, has been trademarked by an aggressive local t-shirt shop owner after an extensive and eye-brow raising million-dollar court battle. Yet another chapter in the sordid history of distasteful t-shirt shops blemishing Duval Street.
Location: Corner of Fleming Street and Whitehead Street.

Key West is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County, Florida, United States. The city encompasses the island of Key West, the part of Stock Island north of U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) (east), Sigsbee Park (north, originally known as Dredgers Key), Fleming Key (north), and Sunset Key (west, originally known as Tank Island). Both Fleming Key and Sigsbee Park are part of Naval Air Station Key West and are inaccessible by civilians. Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The official city motto is One Human Family.
Driving US 1 to Key West 1 month after the hurricane
Hello all ROb here, I just got time to edit the videos of my drive to and from Miami International Airport to Key West FLorida. I was a little worried about this drive after hurricane Irma Hit. The Drive from Miami International airport to Key West takes about 3 1/2 hours but you have to give yourself plenty of time because some parts are only 1 lane each way. Key west FLorida did not get hit as bad as the rest of the Florida Keys did with hurricane Irma. I believe it was Marathon Key that got hit the worst. There was A lot of debris and cleaning up still going on on US 1 down to the keys and we drove it 1 month after the hurricane hit it.
Thanks for watching,
Rob here AKA Trev2323
TimeLapse - U.S. Route 1 (Florida Keys)
U.S. Highway 1 (US 1) in Florida runs 545 miles (877 km) along the state's east coast from Key West to its crossing of the St. Marys River into Georgia north of Boulogne, and south of Folkston. US 1 was designated through Florida when the United States Numbered Highway System was established in 1926. The road is maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
From its national southern terminus in Key West, US 1 carries the Overseas Highway—the Keys main highway north to the mainland, entering South Florida. From South Florida to Jacksonville, US 1 runs close to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, generally east of Interstate 95 (I-95) and west of State Road A1A (SR A1A), running roughly parallel with both roads. North of Jacksonville, US 1 curves inland towards the St. Mary's River as it enters Georgia.

Key West Road Trip
Our trip to Key West was great, our stops along the way made for a day of adventure! Our first stop was Robbie's Marina of Islamorada. Robbie's hosts an array of water activities including boating, snorkeling and fishing, but they are most famous for their main attraction: tarpon feeding! Hundreds of tourists flock to Robbie's to partake in feeding schools of hungry tarpon daily as well as fending off the equally hungry (and aggressive) pelicans. We had a light lunch, dockside at Hungry Tarpon ( the most obvious and fitting name lol). Continuing on the road to Key West, we drove through Lower Matecumbe Key where we were enamored by the beautiful blue water we found ourselves surrounded by and quite literally stopped on the side of the road to take it in. Here we noticed others used these unnamed strips of land between mile marker 75-78 as secluded beach and picnic areas. Crossing the famous seven mile bridge was breathtaking, known as one of the longest overseas bridges we admired the original seven mile bridge on our right which is currently open to cyclists and pedestrians. The seven mile bridge connects the upper and lower keys, so we were almost there! Our next stop was Bahia State Park on Big Pine Key, one of Florida's southernmost state parks-it houses a great beach, camping and picnic areas as well as a the famous Bahia Honda Rail Bridge which formerly connected Bahia Honda Key to Spanish Harbor Key. We took in the beautiful views and continued on our journey. Alas we reached our final destination: mile marker 0 on US 1 or the end of the rainbow as it is affectionately called; Key West, Florida. We parked our car and walked through this charming town which was reminiscent of New Orleans and Charleston....but with roosters! Thats right, roosters roamed the streets like stray cats lol. Our trip to the Keys would not be complete without a visit to the southernmost point buoy, the most visited attraction of Key West; declaring the Keys as the Conch Republic and Cuba as close as 90 miles away. We visited the Conch Shack and tried their famous conch fritters which were delicious. Captain Tonys Saloon named the oldest bar in Florida was our next stop before catching the much anticipated sunset on Mallory Square; a waterfront plaza in Key West's historic old town.
The Florida Keys 7: End/Beginning of U.S. Hwy. 1
United States Highway 1, one of the world's longest highways, has her southern terminus in Key West, Florida. People always want to take photos at this spot, yet in New Orleans, exactly zero people, every year, want to take a photo at the southern terminus of U.S. Hwy. 61.

Key West is the county seat of Monroe County.[3] Key West is the southernmost city in the Continental United States. It also contains the southern terminus of U.S. 1, State Road A1A, the East Coast Greenway and, before 1935, the Florida East Coast Railway.
Key West is 129 miles (208 km) southwest (229.9 degrees) of Miami, Florida,[4] (about 160 miles (260 km) by car) and 106 miles (171 km) north-northeast (21.2 degrees) of Havana, Cuba.[5] Cuba, at its closest point, is 94 statute miles (151 km) south.[6] Key West is a seaport destination for many passenger cruise ships.[7] The Key West International Airport provides airline service. Hotels and guest houses are available for lodging. Naval Air Station Key West is an important year round training site for naval aviation due to the superb weather conditions. It is also a reason the city was chosen as the Winter White House of President Harry S. Truman. The central business district primarily comprises Duval Street, and includes much of the northwest corner of the island along Whitehead, Simonton, Front, Greene, Caroline, and Eaton Streets and Truman Avenue. The official city motto is One Human Family.
Points of interest
One of the biggest attractions on the island is a concrete replica of a buoy at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets that claims to be the southernmost point in the contiguous United States (see Extreme Points). Erected in 1983, the famous brightly painted and labeled SOUTHERNMOST POINT CONTINENTAL U.S.A., it is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West.[44]
However, the marker is not located at the southernmost point in the continental United States, as discussed below:
Whitehead Spit, on the Truman Annex property just west of the buoy, is the true southernmost point, but it has no marker since it is U.S. Navy land and cannot be entered by civilian tourists.
The private yards directly to the east of the buoy and the beach areas of Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park also lie farther south than the buoy.
The farthest-south location that the public can visit is the seaward end of the White Street Pier.
Florida's, and by extension the continental United States', true physically southernmost point is Ballast Key, a private island owned by David W. Wolkowsky, a wealthy developer, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Key West. Although Ballast Key is located within both the Key West National Wildlife Refuge and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, signs on the island strictly prohibit unauthorized visitors.
The claim 90 Miles to Cuba on the monument is close to correct, Cuba at its closest point has been measured at 94 statute miles (151 km) from Key West.
The original Key West settlement on the western part of the island is called Old Town and comprises the Key West Historic District. It includes the major tourist destinations of the island, including Mallory Square, Duval Street, the Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor. It is where are found the classic bungalows and guest mansions.
Southernmost Point in the Continental USA - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Key West, Florida)
Apparently the Southernmost Point in the Continental USA! If you look at a map, there is a more lower point, but this place has a cool marker (buoy) to take selfies with lol! We managed to park pretty easily for free in a nearby neighbourhood and for some reason, there are random chickens (feral fowls / Key West chickens!) roaming around the roads and footpaths lol!
The Southernmost Point Buoy is an anchored concrete buoy in Key West, Florida marking the southernmost point in the continental United States. The large painted buoy is a tourist attraction established in 1983 by the city at the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street. Cuba is 90 miles south of this point in Key West. The southernmost point was originally just marked with a small sign, which was often moved or taken, the City of Key West erected the now famous concrete buoy in 1983. Today it is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West.

Seven Mile Bridge - VIDEO PREVIEW (Florida Keys, Florida)
Apparently one of the top things to do in the Florida Keys according to trip Advisor lol! They is really no avoiding it if heading to Key West anyway, but the views were really spectacular! To be honest, the entire drive from mainland Florida to Key West had these kinda views (Other than the towns and cities we passed).
The Seven Mile Bridge is a famous bridge in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is part of the Overseas Highway in the Keys, which is part of the 2,369-mile U.S. Route 1.
There are two bridges in this location. The modern bridge is open to vehicular traffic; the older one only to pedestrians and cyclists. The older bridge, originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge, was constructed from 1909 to 1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler and Clarence S. Coe as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, also known as the Overseas Railroad.
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.
The climate of the Keys is defined as tropical savanna according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, such as Totten Key. The total land area is 137.3 square miles (356 km2). As of the 2010 census the population was 73,090 with an average density of 532.34 per square mile (205.54/km2), although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys. The US Census population estimate for 2014 is 77,136.
The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.

Thirty-six federally protected animals live in the park, some of which face grave threats to their survival.
In the United States, the American crocodile's only habitat is within South Florida. They were once overhunted for their hides. They are protected today from hunting but are still threatened by habitat destruction and injury from vehicle collisions when crossing roads to reach waterways. About 2,000 crocodiles live in Florida, and there are roughly 100 nests in the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks. Crocodiles populations in South Florida have increased as has the number of alligators. Crocodiles were reclassified from endangered to threatened in the United States in 2007.

The Real Everglades
The Florida panther is one of the most endangered mammals on earth. About 230 live in the wild, primarily in the Everglades and the Big Cypress Swamp. The biggest threats to the panther include habitat destruction from human development, vehicle collisions, inbreeding due to their limited gene pool, parasites, diseases, and mercury poisoning.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) listed eight Reptiles of Concern, including the Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus), focusing on them for their large sizes and aggressive natures, allowing licensed hunters to kill any listed animals in protected areas and sell their meat and hides. Burmese pythons, two subspecies of African rock pythons (Python sebae; northern and southern), and yellow anacondas (Eunectes notaeus) were banned from import into the U.S. in 2012. United States Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced the inclusion of these reptiles at Everglades National Park. Exotic species control falls under the management of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which has been compiling and disseminating information about invasive species since 1994. Control of invasive species costs $500 million per year, but 1,700,000 acres (6,900 km2) of land in South Florida remains infested

If you're making the trip to Miami, you might as well find time to visit Key West, too. Getting there isn't hard, whether you drive yourself, hire a ride, fly or take a boat. And most methods get you there in about three to four hours. Of course, if you drive, lots of other Florida Keys and sightseeing opportunities along the way offer additional memorable experiences.

By Land
The approximately 159-170-mile drive from Miami to Key West is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the country. Take your own vehicle or a rental straight down US-1, passing through all the Florida Keys, until the end of the road in Key West. It's a roughly 3 1/2-hour drive. Of course, that assumes you don't have to contend with much traffic; try not to head out of Miami around rush hour. Be careful passing through Big Pine Key, which is a deer refuge.
If you prefer a more hands-off approach to this scenic drive, a number of buses and shuttles run from Miami to Key West.
