Albany Hit Hard by Snowstorm Ravaging Northeastern United States
Residents of Albany, New York, spent the morning digging out their vehicles, Monday, December 2, as a snowstorm that hit the United States over the Thanksgiving weekend threatens to dump 15 to 36 centimeters of snow on the region.

READ MORE: A wintry storm that made Thanksgiving travel miserable across much of the United States, gripped the East with a messy mixture of rain, snow, sleet and wind, slowing the Monday morning commute, closing schools and offices, and snarling air travel.
Forecasters said the nor'easter could drop 25 to 50 centimeters of snow by Tuesday from Pennsylvania to Maine. Heavy snow was possible in the Appalachian Mountains down to Tennessee and North Carolina.
Schools closed preemptively, as rain was expected to turn into snow in the region's first significant storm of the season, a nor'easter so named because the winds typically come from the northeast.

La Plata, MO, in Northern Missouri, is located on BNSF Railway's Marceline Subdivision at milepost 312.7, part of their Southern Transcon, the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) mainline between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief passenger train stops here twice a day; the eastbound train #4 in the morning and the westbound train #3 in the evening.
The typical BNSF freight train volume is between 50 and 70 trains per 24 hours. There are 2 cameras available.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, toppling multi-story buildings in Kathmandu, the capital, and creating landslides and avalanches in the Himalaya Mountains. ... The quake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, and only 17 days later, there was another major quake, a magnitude 7.3 temblor.

The Trinidad Express reported on Tuesday that people had left their homes while buildings shook. The last strongest earthquake to hit the country was in 1968, according to the research center.

Japan earthquake and tsunami of 2011, also called Great Sendai Earthquake or Great Tōhoku Earthquake, severe natural disaster that occurred in northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The event began with a powerful earthquake off the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan’s main island, which caused widespread damage on land and initiated a series of large tsunami waves that devastated many coastal areas of the country, most notably in the Tōhoku region (northeastern Honshu). The tsunami also instigated a major nuclear accident at a power station along the coast.

The 2017 Puebla earthquake struck on 19 September 2017 with an estimated magnitude of Mw 7.1 and strong shaking for about 20 seconds. Its epicenter was about 55 km (34 mi) south of the city of Puebla. The earthquake caused damage in the Mexican states of Puebla and Morelos and in the Greater Mexico City area, including the collapse of more than 40 buildings. 370 people were killed by the earthquake and related building collapses, including 228 in Mexico City, and more than 6,000 were injured.

It prompted evacuations in Caracas, and caused shaking in Colombia, Guyana, Brazil, Grenada, Dominica, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago, the last of which also suffered damage and brief phone and power outages from about 100 miles away.

Amtrak Coast Starlight, in a Sleeper Car Bedroom
The overnight 14 Coast Starlight (Amtrak) from Los Angeles to Seattle.

--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. ????
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a Lounge Car featured in this video, not an actual Parlour Car. I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the Parlour Car, and I was at fault for following the flock in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.

America's Mainstreets: Can We Make Travel Part of the Destination Again?
This documentary is the result of a collaborative student project undertaken by undergraduate and graduate students Erin Dorbin (M.A. History and Media), Eric LaGrange (M.A. Fine Arts), Dale Mattison and Greg Pruden at the University at Albany in the spring of 2009.
The group set out to explore the histories of routes 20 & 9 in New York state as case studies to explain how America's changing travel patterns in the second half of the 20th century altered the landscapes along the country's two-lane highways. We were also interested in exploring how these changes in travel adversely impacted the small localized economies along these routes that were once dependent on tourism dollars to sustain themselves.
Erin Dorbin and Eric LaGrange are responsible for the completion of the Route 20 and conclusion portion of the project, while Dale Mattison and Greg Pruden completed the Route 9/Frontier Town section of the documentary.
This video is our first edit at 22 minutes for the purposes of our final class assignment. Three of us in the group had never worked with Final Cut Pro before and one of us had no idea how to use a video camera, but we figured it out (for the most part) and made it happen! Enjoy!

Driving through Johnston, South Carolina
Johnston is a town in Edgefield County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Augusta, Georgia, metropolitan area. The town's official welcome sign states that it is Peach Capital of the World.

Los Angeles to San Francisco - Road Trip via Hwy 5
In Aug. 2016 we flew from the East Coast to the West Coast (the best coast?)! We wanted to see as much of California as we could and figured the best way was to drive. We arrived at LAX at night and then began our drive up north to the San Francisco Bay Area the next morning. We took Highway 5 North and it was a beautiful drive. Every city in California has its own culture and beauty, but San Francisco has its own, unique charm. :) Enjoy!
Riding the AMTRAK Adirondack from New York to Montreal (winter)
Riding the Adirondack, during the winter is arguably one of the most beautiful train rides one can experience in North America. The train begins by riding literally next to the Hudson river until it hits Albany. From there it diverges away from the river and goes into the Adirondack mountains: where breathtaking views of lakes, Vermont and mountains dominate the rest of the trip. Finally it enters Canada (by which point it is dark).

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) approved the application submitted by the Arizona Department of Transportation to establish U.S. Bicycle Route 90, a continuous route through Arizona that connects to New Mexico and California.

What Would Happen if “The BIG ONE” (Earthquake) Hits the WEST COAST
When most people think of the “Big One,” they often think about an earthquake caused by the San Andreas Fault. However, there’s actually a more dangerous fault called the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The Cascadia Subduction Zone, also known as the Cascadia Fault, is almost 700 miles long and stretches the west coast of North America from Vancouver Island to Northern California. For some perspective, an earthquake caused by the San Andreas Fault could reach 8.3 on the Richter scale, but a Cascadia earthquake will be more like a 9.2. That means that the quake could shake for up to four and a half minutes.

Oneonta (/ˌoʊniˈɒntə/ OH-nee-ON-tə) is a city in southern Otsego County, New York, United States. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, it had a population of 13,901. Its nickname is City of the Hills. While the word oneonta is of undetermined origin, it is popularly believed to mean place of open rocks in the Mohawk language. This refers to a prominent geological formation known as Table Rock at the western end of the city.
The city is surrounded by the town of Oneonta, a separate municipal and political jurisdiction. Oneonta Municipal Airport (N66) is north of the city.

New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border with Rhode Island east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York is often referred to as New York State or the State of New York to distinguish it from New York City, the state's largest city.

Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England.
The earliest Europeans in New York were French colonists and Jesuit missionaries who came down from settlements at Montreal for trade and proselytizing. New York was inhabited by various tribes of Algonquian and Iroquoian speaking Native Americans at the time Dutch settlers moved into the region in the early 17th century. In 1609, the region was first claimed by Henry Hudson for the Dutch. They built Fort Nassau in 1614 at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers, where the present-day capital of Albany later developed. The Dutch soon also settled New Amsterdam and parts of the Hudson River Valley, establishing the colony of New Netherland based on trade and profitmaking. It was a multicultural community from the earliest days and the center of trade and immigration. The British annexed the colony from the Dutch in 1664. The borders of the British colony, the Province of New York, were quite similar to those of the present-day state. Both the Dutch and the British imported African slaves as laborers to the city and colony; African Americans were integral to the rise of the city. New York had the second-highest population of slaves after Charleston, SC.
About one-third of the battles of the U.S. Revolutionary War took place in New York. The state constitution was enacted in 1777. New York became the 11th state to ratify the United States Constitution, on July 26, 1788. Slavery was extensive in New York City and some agricultural areas. The state passed a law for the gradual abolition of slavery soon after the Revolutionary War, but the last slave in New York was not freed until 1827.
