USS Becuna in Philadelphia
One of the historic ships in Philadelphia, the USS Becuna is a submarine that saw service in World War 2 and the Cold War.
USS Becuna submarine - Philadelphia - 01 Nov 2010
Launched in 1944, the Becuna (SS-319) completed five wartime patrols in the Pacific Ocean. Becuna is similar to many submarines built in Philadelphia for the U.S. Navy.
Becuna is a BALAO-class submarine built in New London, CT. During World War II, Becky prowled the Pacific Ocean for Japanese ships, and is credited with sinking 3.5 Japanese merchant ships. Converted in 1951 to a Guppy 1A type with sophisticated radar and torpedo equipment including nuclear warheads, she is the only Guppy 1-A submarine on display.
Becuna's Cold War missions often found her in the Atlantic, trailing Soviet submarines with eavesdropping equipment aboard. She served in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and ended her long and distinguished career as a training submarine in Connecticut.
Becuna was decommissioned in 1969 and has been part of the Philadelphia Independence Seaport Museum's Historic Ship Zone since 1996. Becuna is a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

USS Becuna Tour
This was a video I made over two years ago during my trip to Philadelphia. My robotics club went there to participate at the 2011 National Sea Perch Challenge.
I do believe this was after the actual competition and took a trip down downtown to the Independence Seaport Museum, which is located in Penn's Landing, right off the banks of the Delaware River.

A Walk Through Penn's Landing and Independence Seaport Museum
During my two day layover in Philadelphia as part of my Train Odyssey 3, I visited the Penn's Landing area which is on the west shore of the Delaware River and just east of the Historic District (Old City) Philadelphia. I spent most of my time at the Independence Seaport Museum, which includes the museum proper and also a WW I navy cruiser and a WW II submarine. This video is of my 'walk throughs' of those attractions.

USS Becuna - Approaching the Submarine
Approaching the starboard side of the boat, you can see the stern tubes, a torpedo, a memorial plaque, conning tower, bow planes, and, if my camera were better, bow tubes.

USS Olympia - Philadelphia - 01 Nov 2010
This is a lengthy video, I know. Lots to see and those of you into ships may appreciate it.
Displacement: 5,870 tons
Coal bunker capacity: 1,085.6 tons (400 tons normal)
Length: 344'1 Beam: 53' Draft: 24'10 fully loaded
Engine Type: vertical triple expansion engines, 17,313hp
Armament: four 8 (2x2), ten 5, fourteen 6-pounders
six 1-pounders, two Colt Gatling guns
Torpedoes: six 18 Whitehead above-surface torpedo tubes
Complement: 33 officers, 378 enlisted men
When I talk about all the open space on the ship it is probably because only some crew hammocks/living areas are depicted. With 378 enlisted men I sure there would be a lot more hammock and personal gear distributed throughout the ship.

USS Olympia Toured by the SNAME Philadelphia Section
On September 22, 2010, the Philadelphia Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers toured the USS Olympia. Today, a museum at the Independence Seaport Museum, at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia.
Commissioned in 1895, the USS Olympia served as the flagship for Commodore Dewey at the Battle of Manilla Bay, May 1 1898. This battle marked the entry of the United States as a global military power.
She is the oldest steel warship still afloat.
However, the long-term viability of the USS Olympia is in doubt. Plans to scuttle the Olympia making her into an artificial reef are under consideration.
The USS Olympia will close to visitors on November 22, 2010. This may have been the last opportunity for SNAME members to tour this historic ship.
Special thanks to the Independence Seaport Museum.
