Uji, Kyoto - Letters from Japan
Uji is located between the historical cities of Nara and Kyoto. Uji is known for Byodo-in, the temple that is featured on the reverse side of the 10-yen coin. It is also known as the region where some of the best green tea in Japan, and perhaps the world, is grown, and it is home to the oldest shrine building in Japan, Ujigami Shrine. Finally, many literature fans visit Uji because it is the setting to the last 10 chapters inTales of Genji.

Byodoin Temple, Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture
Byodoin Temple is located in the Uji City, southern Kyoto Prefecture in Japan. This temple is a few minutes walk from the Keihan Railway Uji Station. This temple was established by Kampaku (chief adviser to the Emperor) Fujiwara Yorimichi in 1052 AD.
The most famous structure in the Byodoin Temple precincts is the Phoenix Hall. It is an elaborate structure built in 1053 AD as a worship hall for Amida Buddha. Amida Buddha is the principal object of worship for the Pure Land Buddhism.
The front view of the Phoenix Hall is featured on the ten Yen coin. Most people who visit this temple, take a picture of themselves holding a ten yen coin, standing in front of the Phoenix Hall.
The Phoenix Hall and the pond around it are mentioned in various Uji Chapters of the classic novel Tale of Genji.
Enjoy!!!
Romantic and Historic Uji City (宇治市), Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Uji City (宇治市) is located south of Kyoto Prefecture and about an half hour train ride from the JR Kyoto Station. I compare Uji City with the Arashiyama district in Kyoto, in terms of romanticism and historical importance. Uji city also contains many beautiful temples and shrines that are recognized as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. This city is serviced by both JR Nara Line and the Keihan Electric Railway.
One of the most important association of the Uji city is with the last ten chapters of the Heian era (11th century) classic novel Tale of Genji (源氏物語) called Uji Chapters. This novel was written by Murasaki Shikibu. If you happen to read the novel, you can associate many Uji Chapter references with the sights in this video.
Hope you enjoy it.
Byodoin Houōdo Temple - Uji, Kyoto ᴴᴰ ● 平等院鳳凰堂 宇治 京都
► Byodoin is a buddhist temple in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, founded in 1052 by the Fujiwara clan. The main building (the phoenix hall) with the golden phoenix on the roof was completed in 1053, and the two wings followed in 1054.
Byodoin is also popular nicknamed The 10 yen coin Temple, as its pictured on the backside of - you guessed it - Japanese 10¥coins.
As it was the case with the Golden Pavilion I showed you recently, Byodoin is also located in a picturesque setting, by a large pond, with the mountains as a backdrop - Kyoto at its best.
Don't miss this place if going to Kyoto, even it's not so easy getting there, as many other famous Kyoto sights it's 100% worth it.
Admission fee is 600yen, open 7 days a week. - Enjoy!

[Japan] Uji - Byodo-in temple, Uji Shrines & matcha parfait
I visited the beautiful Byodo-in temple, crossed the river and carried on walking to the Uji Shrine and then to the Ujigami Shrine which was designated as the guardian of Byodo-in temple at the time.
I ended this day in Uji with a delicious matcha parfait with some warabi kinako mochi... :)

JAPAN TRIP WINTER 2018 // KYOTO 京都// UJI'S BYODOIN 平等院
Getting to Uji in Kyoto took surprisingly longer than we expected and when we finally arrived late in the afternoon, the sun was already beginning to set. Nevertheless, we were able to see the beautiful Byoudouin with its famous phoenix hall surrounded by a pond which reflects the evening sky!
There was one unfortunate thing though... Keep watching to find out what I mean ;p

Byodo-in Temple in Uji (near Kyoto)
Another wonderful and amazing temple.
In the middle part of the big temple there is the Phoenix Hall in which you can see a marvellous and very big Buddha Statue.
Unfortunately it was not allowed to take a photo or video of this wonderful Buddha statue.
