Ukraine: Protesters storm conference centre holding riot police
Protesters stormed the International Conference Centre (ICC), known as Ukrainian House, in Kiev on Saturday, where 200 riot police were reportedly trapped in the basement since earlier in the evening.
Around 500 protesters had surrounded the ICC while hurling stones at it, smashing windows, setting up barricades and setting off fireworks inside the building.
The police are reportedly stuck in the basement of the ICC following a failed surprise attack on anti-government demonstrators.

Ruptly is live from outside Kiev's Zhuliany International Airport on Friday, August 30 amidst reports of ongoing prisoner exchange negotiations. Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Ruslan Ryaboshapka, reportedly stated on social media that Russia and Ukraine began the exchange on Thursday, August 29.
The rumours of a reported prisoner swap started early on Friday morning, with General Prosecutor of Ukraine announcing that Ukrainian prisoners were already on the way home.
The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy later rejected the reports, saying that negotiations are still ongoing.

Ukrainian House, a major conference centre near Independence Square, was a flashpoint in Ukraine's power struggle on Saturday night.
Used as a base for riot police in Kyiv, it was stormed by protesters, who broke windows and threw Molotov cocktails.
Officers resisted with stun grenades and water hose but demonstrators persisted, forcing police to leave.
The protest movement already holds other key buildings in the capital and regional government headquarters outside Kyiv.
Denouncing presidential concessions, one protester told euronews: You can't buy Ukrainian people. We are not for sale. We take decisions and we want Yanukovych and the government to step down.
We have reached a point where police can use violence at any time to clear the place, another man said. The only thing they understand is force.
It is two months since the movement began but unrest has intensified over recent days with the introduction of sweeping anti-protest laws, pushed through parliament by presidential loyalists.
The opposition claims at least six activists have been killed.

Ukraine: Donetsk-born Ukrainian soldier refuses to be part of prisoner exchange
One Ukrainian serviceman, held as a prisoner by militiamen from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR/DNR), refused to return to the pro-Kiev lines as part of a 12-prisoner exchange between the DPR and the Ukrainian army conducted in Aleksandrovka, Thursday. Giving reasons for refusing the man said he was from the Donetsk region and wanted to go home.

In December 1994, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Russian Federation pledged security assurances to Ukraine in connection with its accession to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty as a non-nuclear-weapons state. The signature of the so-called Budapest Memorandum concluded arduous negotiations that resulted in Ukraine’s surrender of its nuclear arsenal, the world’s third-largest, which the country inherited from the collapsed Soviet Union. The signatories of the memorandum pledged to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and inviolability of its borders, and to refrain from the use or threat of military force. After Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and aggression in eastern Ukraine, the meaning and value of security commitments pledged to Ukraine in 1994 has become a contentious and hotly debated issue.
This one-day conference aims to revisit the history of the Budapest Memorandum; consider the repercussions of its violation for international security and the broader nonproliferation regime; and draw lessons for the future. The conference brings together academics, practitioners, and experts who have contributed to developing US policy toward post-Soviet nuclear disarmament, participated in the negotiations of the Budapest Memorandum, and dealt with the repercussions of its breach in 2014.

Ukraine: Trapped riot police walk free from Kiev conference centre
Police officers that had been trapped inside the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Kiev left the building in the early hours of Sunday following successful negotiations with opposition leader Vitali Klitschko and protesters.
The protesters had previously surrounded the building, while hurling stones at it, smashing windows, setting up barricades and setting off fireworks inside the building.
The police were reportedly stuck in the basement of the ICC following a failed surprise attack on anti-government demonstrators.

Ukraine's embattled president has announced that he is returning to work on Monday after four days' sick leave.
It came as thousands of protesters filled Kiev's main square - demanding that he give up power.
Opposition leaders, fresh from meeting European US officials at a conference in Munich, told the crowd that they would secure international aid of they were able to take power.
We have a common understanding with our Western partners about what should be done in Ukraine and how much money it requires, said Arseniy Yatsenyuk, leader of Ukraine's opposition Fatherland Party.
But first of all, the question is who will be executing this plan of change for Ukraine, as no one trusts this regime.
President Viktor Yanukovych angered opponents when he spurned a trade pact with the EU - turning to Russia for financial support instead.

USA: WH aides express concern about 'improper' Trump's Ukraine call

White House officials testified in the third day of impeachment hearings, expressing their concerns about the phone call US President Donald Trump had with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in Washington DC on Tuesday.
Director for European Affairs for the US National Security Council, lieutenant colonel Alexander Vindman said: it was the connection to investigate a political opponent was inappropriate and improper. I made that connection as soon as the President brought up the Biden investigation.
Jennifer Williams, aide to US Vice President Mike Pence, added: the references to specific individual investigations such as former Vice President Biden and his son struck me as political in nature, given that the former Vice President is a political opponent of the president.
Trump is alleged to have asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to find damaging information on the business dealings of Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, during the call. Hunter Biden was on the board of a Ukrainian gas company between 2014 and 2019.

Ukraine: 2 injured as Independence Day explosion rocks central Kiev
An explosion went off near the building of the Ukrainian government in central Kiev, Thursday, as the city was celebrating Ukrainian Independence Day.
The blast occurred at 2.06 pm (EEST), at least two people were injured. Security services and explosive experts are currently working on site. The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.

(26 Sep 2019) Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy toured the 9/11 Memorial Pools in lower Manhattan on Thursday afternoon with his wife Helen.
Zelenskiy is in New York attending the United Nations General Assembly.
Abruptly cast into the center of a political storm in the United States, Ukraine's president steered clear of the controversy Wednesday as he made his debut speech on diplomacy's biggest stage, focusing instead on the horrors of war and on his country's ongoing conflict with Russia.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy's address at the U.N. General Assembly came less than a day after a formal U.S. House impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump was launched — a development that was sparked partly by a July 25 phone call between the two leaders.

STORYLINE:
An abrupt price hike for natural gas came into effect in Ukraine on Sunday raising concerns over social unrest and uncontrolled inflation.
Increasing gas prices was a key demand of the International Monetary Fund in exchange for this week's approval of a 15 (b) billion US dollar loan over 2 1/2 years to help Ukraine with economic reforms.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov expressed dissatisfaction with the hike on Wednesday, saying, however, there was no alternative to the decision.
Local trade unions have already threatened to sue the government over the 50 percent price hike to be imposed on households from August, warning they would hold nationwide protests when the ongoing heat wave is over.
Political analyst Vadim Karasyov said such unpopular economic measures are mostly caused by a serious financial situation in the Ukraine.
He said the price hike would mean a decrease of social standards, despite the pre-election promises of the Party of Regions - the party supporting President Viktor Yanukovych - to raise them.
For Kiev pensioner Antonina Kulakovskaya the increase of the gas price is a serious problem.
Antonina worked as a teacher in one of Kiev's schools for 20 years, and the pension she now gets is just over 200 US dollars.
This will hit our family budget very seriously, Kulakovskaya said.
We get very little money and it will be hard for us to pay for commodities.
Russia also has pursued other export pipelines bypassing Ukraine.
