SUMMARY
=======
Ulaanbaatar, formerly anglicised as Ulan Bator (Mongolian: Улаанбаатар, [ʊɮɑːm.bɑːtʰɑ̆r], Ulaγanbaγatur, literally Red Hero), is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. The city is not part of any aimag (province), and its population as of 2014 was over 1.3 million, almost half of the country's total population. Located in north central Mongolia, the municipality lies at an elevation of about 1,300 meters (4,300 ft) in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the country's cultural, industrial and financial heart, the centre of Mongolia's road network and connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system. The city was founded in 1639 as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre. It settled permanently at its present location, the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers, in 1778. Prior to that occasion it changed location twenty-eight times, each new location being chosen ceremonially. In the twentieth century, Ulaanbaatar grew into a major manufacturing center. Ulaanbaatar is a member of the Asian Network of Major Cities 21. The city's official website lists Moscow, Hohhot, Seoul, Sapporo and Denver as sister cities.
SUERVEILLANCE VIDEO: armed robbery at Chang's Mongolian Grill; tips sought
Please reference Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Case #11-33473
On Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 at 2:35 p.m. a female employee of Chang's Mongolian Grill was robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot behind the business.
Investigators believe this was a targeted attack.
The suspect -- an adult male about 5'8 tall, with a medium build -- was armed with a handgun.
Video surveillance of the rear parking lot showed the suspect waiting until the employee left Chang's rear employee exit and sat in her truck. The suspect then ran across the parking lot directly toward the employee.
The suspect wore dark sunglasses, gloves, and a bandana to cover his face.
The suspect robbed the employee at the door of her truck. After demanding cash and her purse, he struck her in the face, then grabbed the purse from the front seat.
The suspect also struck the employee on the leg with the handgun before he ran from the area.
The suspect fled with a small coach purse and its undisclosed contents.
Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies contained the area and used a police canine to search for the suspect. He was not located or identified.
The victim employee was treated and released from a local hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
The victim has declined interviews at this time.

Postcards To Mongolia by Thomas Blomster
(Music begins about 3:00)
The over and undertones are especially beautiful and pure — which decay into the earth. And there is a buzz of conversation between the instruments groups. Hard to imagine composing for instruments without hearing it occasionally played by musicians expert with those instruments. -Susan Barron, artist, NYC
7/25/2017 Denver
Dear Friends,
Nikki and I just returned from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where I was the first foreign composer and conductor to work with the Morin Khuur Ensemble, the traditional folk orchestra that is a branch of the Mongolian Philharmonic. A series of rehearsals culminated with the performance of my composition “Postcards To Mongolia” as part of “Beautiful Mongolia”, a concert by the Morin Khuur Ensemble during the Naadam Festival. The Morin Khuur Ensemble is one of the best orchestras I have ever worked with or listened to. The sense of ensemble, precision, and especially phenomenal intonation are of the highest level, comparable to any of the great ensembles in the world. It was a challenge for both the ensemble and myself to find common ground as our two very different cultures learned to work together, not to speak of the language barrier. Ultimately the music became our common ground, the universal language. The MKE performed my composition with complete authority and understanding, and I like to think that while I challenged their norms, my composition also showed some understanding of the Mongolian culture. The Music Director of the MKE told me the music evoked the Mongolian landscape for him. As I told Westword Magazine before the trip, I went with an open mind and no preset expectations. The reception of the Mongolia people and the degree of cultural exchange exceeded anything I could even dream of. As one Mongolian arts administrator commented: “Your Postcards To Mongolia? We got it!”
Unexpected highlights of our trip:
1. Met with Mongolian Deputy Prime Minister and was presented with a replica statue of Morin Khuur (horse head fiddle), Mongolia's national symbol.
2. Met with the advisor to the American ambassador at the US Embassy in Ulaanbaator, commemorating 30 years of USA/Mongolia relations.
3. Was made an honorary member of the Morin Khuur Ensemble and presented with official pendants and commemorative history book of MKE.
4. My score of “Postcards To Mongolia” is being placed in the Mongolian national archives as a permanent part of its two thousand-plus year history.
5. The concert broadcast live on Mongolian Television with repeat broadcasts following the live performance.
In a time of fractured relations and rising international tensions, we are proud as Coloradoans and Americans to have used the international language of music to promote a cultural exchange with one of the most remote corners of the globe, Mongolia.
