Bo Sang, The Umbrella Village (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Umbrella Village Bo Sang - Thailand
Bo Sang umbrella village is located in the eastern part of Chiang Mai city, Thailand - is a land of rich traditional culture that tourists should not miss out.
Bor Sang in the Thai language means 'umbrella'.
Previously, Bor Sang has belonged to the ancient kingdom of Lanna, there were many beautiful temples, so many large rice fields with umbrella handicraft villages where existed more than 5 centuries.
Bor Sang village has been famous both domestically and abroad - so when mentioning the name of Bor Sang, people immediately think of paper craft and umbrella - also a symbol of Chiang Mai.
The small village has many families from generation to generation and is famous all over the place for its sophisticated and beautiful products. All the people in the village live by making umbrellas craft.
Bor Sang umbrellas are made from local bamboo and paper made from mulberry bark.
Mulberry trees are chosen to make paper because the fibers of mulberry are longer than other pulp types, so it makes the paper more durable while it is still very light.
The process of making a beautiful umbrella undergoes many meticulous steps.
The bark after peeling will be soaked in water for 2-4 hours then brought to boil with ash powder from 3-4 hours, then it will be washed with cold water.
After that process, the artisan used a wooden hammer to beat up the bark constantly until the bark is softened and then soak it into a large water tank.
About 1 hour/time people will use a long wooden stick to stir the bark to dissolve.
This process is carried out continuously for several days, square trays with dense mesh are dipped in water and picked out, repeated several times until the pulp dissolves from the bark that will settle on the tray a thin layer.
Wooden frames help shape the pulp and dry it outdoors for about 20 minutes.
Making the bamboo frames and decorative paint is also very elaborate like making the paper.
The bamboo tubes after being cut will be soaked in an anti-termite liquid and then chopped into small cells.
After shaping, the bamboo frame will soak through this liquid again.
The final step is decoration, drawing on the umbrella, popular patterns are flowers and birds.
The workshops open from 8.30am to 17h daily.
A special feature though visiting Bor Sang village on a festival or regular day, visitors will be guided by artisans to participate in part or all stages of making an umbrella.
Umbrellas Artisans working at Bor Sang are very skilled-full, not only hand-drawing umbrella, but artists also draw on the bumper phone for sale to tourists.
Particularly Bor Sang village has festivals, held every third week of January of every year.
This is a famous festival, attracting a lot of tourists. Bor Sang is brilliant and colorful, the whole village seemed to wear the gorgeous costume of countless umbrellas.
Bor Sang umbrellas is not only a souvenir that tourists love and search in Thailand but also ranks among the most favorite souvenirs for international tourists when coming to this country.

If you go for a drive out along San Kamphaeng Road to look at all the silk, silverware & gem factories and showrooms be sure to go and visit the Bo Sang Handicraft Centre (8km south-east from Chiang Mai). The local artisans make the world famous Sa Paper umbrellas and parasols that would be a treasured gift for either yourself or someone special back at home.
As seen on danaboutthailand.com
You can watch the whole process as the workers hand make the paper lamps, fans, umbrellas and parasols from start to end. From making the bamboo struts, covering them with paper, putting them out to dry and then hand painting them.
The artists in the Handicraft Centre who meticulously hand paint all the decorations on to the umbrellas are always willing to paint a variety of beautiful designs on items that you bring to them (for example a Purse, handbag, hat, jacket, t-shirt, even the leg of your jeans). Even very complicated scenic designs can be painted on your object right in front of you in minutes. Prices are extremely reasonable and are negotiated with the particular artist, don't be stingy with your money as you will be very proud to show off the beautiful finished product.
There is a large shop attached to the Bo Sang Handicraft Centre which sells a huge variety of exquisitely painted umbrellas and parasols along with other locally made handicraft products. If you don't have room in your luggage to fit all your purchases, the centre can easily arrange to post the goods overseas to your home for you.

Bor Sang mid-sized craft village about nine kilometers east of the Old City specializes in the paper umbrella-making craft. Well known for outstanding handcraft quality as well as signature floral designs. Bor Sang has become synonymous with the paper-umbrella craft itself and the umbrella, a cultural symbol of Chiang Mai.
Here, you'll find plenty of hand-painted umbrellas, tiny cocktail umbrellas, large parasols for gardens or patios and other handmade products – all made from a paper (produced from the bark of the santol tree) and, a more recent development, cotton. The design has also evolved, from the original floral patterns to depictions of Chiang Mai’s rural scenery and even abstract patterns. During the annual Bor Sang Umbrella Festival (every third Friday of January), the entire village and San Kampaeng district come to live with festivities, among them, parades, exhibitions, and Miss Bor Sang pageant contest. In the early days, villagers would make umbrellas during non-harvest seasons. Various umbrella parts would be fashioned out of natural products – bamboo strips for the ribs, softwood for the cap and handle, natural latex for the varnish and a paper for the ‘sail’. All the patterns were drawn using natural colors derived from tree barks and plants. Now acrylic paint is more common.

Bo Sang Umbrella Village, Chiang Mai, 2016
Bo Sang Umbrella Village, is a place where you can see the handmade productions of the umbrellas from the scratch until the finish product. It was not like a village but it was more like a shopping place in a big building. However, it is worth a visit.

Bo Sang Umbrella Festival, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand
Across Thailand, thousands of small craft villages dot the landscape. Each one specializes in the manufacture of a particular handicraft. Especially in northern Thailand, the choices seem endless, but my all-time favorite is the village of Bo Sang, which specializes in handmade paper parasols. The very best time to see how local artisans produce their lovely umbrellas is during the Bo Sang Umbrella Festival, held each January. To read more about my world travels visit my blog,
