Each week MSNBC's Your Business features experts to share their secrets for improving your business. This week, we hit the road once again this week to find out how small businesses are doing on Main Street USA. Natchez, Mississippi is a town that's over 300 years old with a population of about 16,000 people. Like many main streets, there are empty storefronts., but unlike those same communities, business owners here have discovered a formula for survival.

Rocky Springs was, for many years during the later part of the eighteen century and most of the nineteenth century, a thriving community on the Old Natchez Trace. Initially little more than a watering place, the area was first settled around 1790, with Mayburn COOPER settling there in 1796 and recorded in the 1816 census as landowner and head of a family. It was at Rocky Springs that Isaac POWERS built his famous tavern. During these early days, travel on the Trace was by no means safe and it is interesting to note that it was near Rocky Springs that the infamous John MASON once lived.
The settlement grew and the 1829 election precinct received 90 votes. Isaac POWERS was postmaster, and the great mails from the north and south met at his tavern, 18 miles north of Port Gibson, 3 times a week. As early as 1837 there were a number of residents, several stores including ones owned by Garrett KEIRN and a Mr. DREXLER, and a church. The first private school, the Rocky Springs Academy, opened on the 1st of January, 1838, under the direction of Mr. HOLMES.
The area reached a maximum population of about 2,600, plus slaves. In 1860 the population was 2,216, plus about 2,000 slaves, all living within a 25 square mile area. The decline of Rocky Springs began during the Civil War. Then, in 1878, the town was struck by Yellow Fever. In the early 1900's, the boll weevil destroyed most of the cotton crop. Additionally, burdensome taxes, the town's inaccessibility, and almost 100 years of poor farm management causing erosion of the soft soil, created the demise of Rocky Springs. One by one, the citizens began to move away. Finally, in the 1930's, the last store closed. Even the natural springs, for which the town was named, began to dry up.
Today only a few artificats remain of the town of Rocky Springs. However, the old Methodist Church whose first pastor was Rev. Thomas OWENS, is situated on a hill overlooking the once thriving community, still holds regular Sunday services. The church remains as it was in 1837, except that in 1901, the old belfry was removed as it was considered dangerous. Early Christian workers of this church were the families of HARDINGs, LUMs, McCLELLANs, POWERS, BROWNs, BROCKs, CLARKEs, WALLACEs, FAULKs, McCAYs, POWELLs, and McLEONs.

NATCHEZ MISSISSIPPI - Deep South road trip
In the summer of 2015, my parents and I made a fantastic road trip across the Southern States, following the blues highway. Our second stop was Natchez, Mississippi. We enjoyed our stay in this friendly and beautiful historic town, and were impressed by the antebellum houses, city cemetery and our own Bed & Breakfast: The Historic Oak Hill Inn.
We visited Stanton Hall, which offers a glimpse into the life of a wealthy Natchez family. Another antebellum house we visited, was the impressive Longwood. This octagonal house was never finished due to the civil war, which makes it even more interesting.
We had a great dinner at Magnolia Grill and a drink at the Saloon under the Hill, right across the Mississippi river.

Before you is the second largest Indian temple mound in the United States. It was built and used between 1300 and 1600 A.D. by the forerunners of the Natchez Indians.
These Indians used a natural hill as a base, which they reshaped by trimming the top and filling the sides to form a great primary platform, 770 feet long, 435 feet wide and 35 feet high. At the west end still stands a 30-foot secondary mound once topped by a ceremonial structure.

THE TREASURE OF NATCHEZ
We just completed our trips to Natchez Mississippi and Lawton Oklahoma. On this video, we are visiting Natchez. Natchez is located along side of the Mississippi river, bordering Louisiana. The countryside id beautiful. Except for occcassional events, the crowds are very low there. There are plenty of bed and breakfast places to stay at, and I highly recommend the one we spent two nights in, The Guest House. There are hotels in the area as well. There was many things to see in Natchez, and we were only there for one day. If you make this your primary place to visit, you may want to plan your trip for at least two days. There are many mansions there to visit, and we only visited two. The Stanton Hall is a must! If you enjoy history, you will also want to visit the cemetary.

How to Crash a Party | Party Crashing in Natchez | Great Mississippi River Balloon Race 2018
Subscribe to my channel:
Have you ever been invited to a party by a stranger and feared going because you didn't know anyone? Well, this show is for you.
My son, Micah, and I went to Natchez in October to see the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race 2018. Of course, you know me, MS Congeniality, I didn't want to just see hot air balloons. I wanted to ride IN one.
Although we found a pilot who agreed to take us up, the weather never cooperated.
While waiting for a flight, we took up a stranger's invitation to brunch not knowing what to expect.
What we found was the highlight of our non-flight balloon weekend. It was party filled with great people -- Natchez Royalty I was told. it was the place to see and be seen. And had we not faced our fears and stayed in the hotel, our entire balloon weekend would have been a total let down.
Hey y’all, I’m Jaimee Dorris a.k.a. MS congeniality and if you want to live large, face your fears, and be the star of your own life… no matter where you are, Then go ahead and hit the subscribe button and like this video and share with all those women you know who needed too.
Special thanks to everyone who helped make this show happen. Jim Brownie (his family and friends), Carol and Braxton Hobdy, Kurt and Kimberley Vitense, Jack Kelly, and so many more.

From Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg.
Featuring Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, Natchez City Cemetery and the Chapel of the Cross Cemetery in Madison County.
Cemeteries around the state are hallowed places that tell us a lot about our history, like Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, one of the country’s oldest and largest cemeteries that’s still in use today. Then we head up to Friendship Cemetery in Columbus where our national Memorial Day holiday has its roots. Down Highway 61 in Natchez, many of the state’s first settlers found their resting places. Finally, the haunting story of Henry Vick at Chapel of the Cross in Madison County plays a central role in that area’s history.
