Millennium Underground Railway in Budapest, Hungary - The 2nd Oldest Metro Line
the 2nd oldest metro line in the world.
In 2002, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
M1, the oldest of the metro lines operating in Budapest, has been in constant operation since 1896.
The original purpose of the first metro line was to facilitate transport to the Budapest City Park along the elegant Andrássy Avenue without building surface transport affecting the streetscape. The National Assembly accepted the metro plan in 1870 and German firm Siemens & Halske AG was commissioned for the construction, starting in 1894. It took 2,000 workers using up-to-date machinery less than two years to complete. This section was built entirely from the surface (with the cut-and-cover method). Completed by the deadline, it was inaugurated on May 2, 1896, the year of the millennium (the thousandth anniversary of the arrival of the Magyars), by emperor Franz Joseph. One original car is preserved at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine, United States.

Taking the MILLENIUM UNDERGROUND RAILWAY | Budapest, Hungary | The Fluffies Channel
The Fluffies attended a family gathering to celebrate the life of Eric’s father who passed away in May. To get to our cousin’s place, we took the second oldest underground railway in Europe known as Line 1, but officially referred to as the Millennium Underground Railway, Metro 1 or M1). It is the oldest line of the Budapest Metro and was inaugurated on May 2, 1896, the year of the millennium of Hungary.

Underground Railway Museum
Situated at Deák Ferenc Tér on the Budapest Metro in the pedestrain subway, next to the main ticket window, the museum traces the history of the capitals four underground lines. Much emphasis is put on the M1, the yellow metro line and Continental Europes first underground railway which opened for the millenary celebrations in 1896. The museum is housed in a stretch of tunnel and station (called Gizella Tér) that once formed part of the M1 line until it was diverted in 1955 leaving an eerie sound when trains pass near by.

Infiltration: Red Star Train Graveyard and Hungarian Railway Museum Documentary
In this episode check out the (in)famous Red Star Train Graveyard in Budapest.
You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to be amazed by these steel behemoths that tell so many stories from the turbulent 20th century in Hungary.
Some of these stories are horrific. Rumors say that some of the wagons led by the old locomotive MAV 301 were carrying hundreds of thousands Hungarian Jews to their deaths during the German occupation in World War 2.
Not all stories are like that, but the frightening weight of the history in this place is astonishing.
Among the more recent items in the train graveyard are some engines and cars from the Soviet era, inside of which rail tickets from the 1960s can still be found. Altogether the train graveyard offers a great alternative to the usual Budapest tourism sites, not only for train lovers but for anyone with an eye for history.
Exploring this abandoned train graveyard was an amazing experience and it really left a profound impact on us. We hope this video will convey that experience to you also. If it really does, please support us by liking, subscribing, or sharing with fellow enthusiasts for trains, history, and architecture.
In ten years of exploring, we gathered extensive knowledge of many abandoned places and today we offer these services to clients:
* video production
* location scouting and management → Abandoned bunkers, airplane runways, etc.
* line production
* photography / videography
