USA: NEW YORK: CONSTRUCTION WORKERS STAGE PROTEST
English/Nat
Tens of thousands construction workers strangled the morning rush-hour in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday.
The marchers were protesting about the awarding of a non-union contract for a transit project in New York.
Watched by mounted police in riot gear, they spilled onto Fifth Avenue, blowing whistles, waving flags and chanting.
Pedestrian and motor traffic came to a standstill as huge demonstration marched near Grand Central Station toward a construction site at 54th Street and Ninth Avenue.
But police blocked them from going further, prompting some bottle throwing.
Many protesters carried banners identifying themselves as masons, carpenters, roofers and other construction traders.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's a taxpayer issue. They don't train their people. They'll take somebody off the street and they will make him a labourer. The next day they will make him an electrician, the next day they will make him a tin knocker. We go to school for five years to learn our trade. You get your dollars for it. They are paying the same rate that they have to pay for us. They might as well get somebody who has been trained to the do the job. We want a fair bank for our dollars. These people don't have any training, don't have any responsibility.
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Tighe, Union Worker, Local 9-Plumbers and Pipe fitters
City authorities said the crowd numbered about 40-thousand at its peak.
Some shops and offices were forced to open late because their employees couldn't get to work through the crowd.
The demonstrators accused the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of awarding work to a contractor who used non-union help.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's all City money being used. Taxpayers money - my money. And I have got to feed my family and everything.
SUPER CAPTION: Bob Carroll, Union Worker, Local 46 - Ironworker
Scores of police vans and horses were at the scene and police helicopters hung overhead.
As the march grew more rowdy, more than 100 police in riot gear began cutting through the noisy, chanting mob on Ninth Avenue.
Some of them said police used pepper spray and mace before handcuffing them and putting them in a police van.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The horses stormed in to move everybody out of the street and, I don't know - they just started spraying and swinging night sticks and getting everybody out of the street. One cop was pushing me. I told him to get off me - don't touch me - and he took out his mace and sprayed me in the eyes.
SUPER CAPTION: Steven Archipinti, Union Worker, Local 2287
Many businesses and offices near the demonstration opened late because of the crowds and police blocked workers from entering their buildings.
More than 20 minor injuries were reported.
A half-dozen protesters were arrested.

January 6, 2020 - Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today unveiled the 30th proposal of his 2020 State of the State: creating the Empire Station Complex – a 21st century transit complex on Manhattan’s West Side. During a speech at the Association for a Better New York, the Governor announced the plan to transform the existing Penn Station site, integrate the soon-to-be completed Moynihan Train Hall and acquire the block south of Penn Station to create an expanded, remodeled and interconnected train and subway complex.

Welcome.
Michael Long was a small businessman in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and is currently Chairman of the New York State Conservative Party. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1961. A volunteer for United States Senator Barry Goldwater’s 1964 campaign for President, Mr. Long registered as a member of the New York State Conservative Party that same year. In 1968, he was elected as a District Leader of the Conservative Party and went on to be elected Chairman of the Kings County Conservative Party in 1972 and Vice Chairman of the State Conservative Party in 1974.
In 1975, he was elected to one term as the Chairman of Community School Board 19 in Brooklyn and in 1981 became the first registered Conservative to serve on the New York City Council, representing the borough of Brooklyn as its “At Large” member until 1983. In 1980 and again in 1984, Mr. Long proudly cast his vote on behalf of New York State for President Ronald Reagan as a member of the Electoral College.
He continued his leadership in the Conservative Party, being elected Executive Vice Chairman in 1985 and ultimately State Chairman in 1989. In 1994, under the leadership of Chairman Long, the Conservative Party succeeded in providing the margin of victory for the historic election of Republican/Conservative Governor George Pataki and Attorney General Dennis Vacco.
At the 2010 CPAC in Washington, DC, The American Conservative Union Foundation presented Mr. Long with “The Charlton Heston Courage Under Fire Award.” He has received several other awards for community service, including the Knights of Columbus Pro Patria Award, the Bishop Mugavero CYO Award, and the Kiwanis Club Man of the Year Award.
Mr. Long has appeared on both national and local news programs including Crossfire, Hardball, WABC radio, Face Off and Inside City Hall on NY 1, to name a few.
On August 11th of this year, I traveled to the chairman’s Bay Ridge office to discuss a range of issues, which included the scandal involving Governor Andrew Cuomo, the controversy surrounding the death of Eric Garner, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and how Republicans can win the upcoming mid-term elections ….and the White House in 2016.

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking NYC (Narrated) : Industry City, Sunset Park, Brooklyn (August 17, 2019)
Google Maps Location:
A walk through Industry City in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.
From Wikipedia
Industry City (also Bush Terminal) is a historic intermodal shipping, warehousing, and manufacturing complex on the Upper New York Bay waterfront in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. The northern portion, commonly called Industry City on its own, hosts commercial light manufacturing tenants across 6,000,000 square feet (560,000 m2) of space between 32nd and 41st Streets, and is operated by a private consortium. The southern portion, known as Bush Terminal, is located between 40th and 51st Streets is operated by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) as a garment manufacturing complex.
Founded by Bush Terminal Company head Irving T. Bush in the early 1900s, Bush Terminal was the first facility of its kind in New York City and the largest multi-tenant industrial property in the United States. The warehouses were built circa 1892–1910, the railroad from 1896 to 1915, and the factory lofts between 1905 and 1925. During World War I, Bush Terminal was used as a United States Navy base, though it returned to private ownership after the war. At its peak, Bush Terminal covered 200 acres (81 hectares), bounded by Gowanus Bay to the west and north, Third Avenue to the east, 27th Street to the north, and 50th Street to the south.
The surrounding area entered a period of decline after World War II, and by the 1970s, the ports in Bush Terminal had been filled. The entire complex was rebranded as Industry City during the post-war years, though the Bush Terminal name remained in popular use. In the 1970s and 1980s, sections of Bush Terminal were demolished or converted into other uses, including a shopping mall, a federal prison, a privately-operated manufacturing and commercial complex, and a garment manufacturing district operated by the NYCEDC.
Today, the Bush Terminal site collectively comprises roughly 71 acres (29 ha), including sixteen former factory buildings and eleven warehouses between built in the early 20th century. Starting in the 2010s, the complex has been undergoing renovations and expansions. A major expansion of Industry City, which would add 3,000,000 square feet (280,000 m2) of space to the complex, was announced in 2017. The section of Bush Terminal operated by the NYCEDC is also undergoing a renovation into the Made in NY campus, a film, TV, and fashion manufacturing complex that is set to open in 2020.

Ballroom for Bernie - #FeelTheBern - Union Street NYC
In this episode of Union Street, Missy Moser and Fritz Donnelly #FeelTheBern in Washington Square Park when they Ballroom for Bernie to encourage New Yorkers to register to vote! Featuring Matthew Silver.
Recorded March 25th, 2016 - the final day for voter registration in New York.
The New York 2016 Primary is Tuesday, April 19th.
New York is a key state for both parties because of its large slate of presidential delegates. Republicans have 95 delegates up for grabs in New York, the fourth-highest of any state. Democrats have 291 delegates to the national convention, second only to California.
Ballroom dance is a wonderful past time and maybe it's considered elitist, but you can really be anyone and support a humanitarian agenda. So that's why we're out here tonight because we're all in this together and we want to remind people to register to vote, whoever they're voting for. - Fritz Donnelly

Community Advocates and Elected Leaders Convene to Protect Bail Reform in New York State
Emergency Rally to Denounce Efforts by the Trump Administration and NYPD to Rollback New York’s Bail Reform -- with Mayor de Blasio’s Tacit Approval
Community Leaders Urge State Electeds to Stand on the Side of New Yorkers and Put Forth Real Solutions to Mental Health Needs and Supportive Housing, Not Money Bail or Pretrial Jailing
WHEN: Friday, January 31, 2020 at 10AM
WHERE: City Hall Steps, Manhattan
WHO: ALAA-UAW Local 2325, Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, Bronx Defenders, Center for Community Alternatives, Citizen Action of NY, Communities United for Police Reform, Girls for Gender Equity, Jews For Racial & Economic Justice, JustLeadershipUSA, Katal Center for Health, Equity, and Justice; Legal Aid Society, RFK Human Rights, New York Civil Liberties Union, SEIU/1199, NAACP, VOCAL-NY.
WHAT: Rally & press conference to oppose U.S. Attorney General Bill Bar’s scapegoating of Tiffany Harris, to condemn fear-mongering and misinformation campaign by NYPD Commissioner Shea and NYPD officers and to question Mayor Bill de Blasio’s approval of these actions and tactics.
BACKGROUND:
Last week, NYPD Commissioner Shea wrote an op-ed calling for a rollback of bail reform using inaccuracies and fearmongering.
On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr unsealed federal charges against Tiffany Harris in a cynical attempt to use Jewish communities as political pawns and add flames to the fire of the effort to rollback New York’s new bail reform law.
Jewish woman who claims Tiffany Harris assaulted her says attacker needs help, not bail.
Mayor de Blasio, despite continuing to call himself a “progressive,” praised Attorney General Barr, condoning the Trump administration’s political weaponization of racialized fear and efforts to divide our communities.
The new bail reform law went into effect on January 1 – less than one month ago – finally addressing a racist system of bail that left hundreds of thousands in jail over the years, disproportionately Black & Latinx and low-income people.
⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking NYC (Narrated) : Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan (October 7, 2019)
Google Maps Location:
A narrated walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan. I talk about its history, construction, and current state of the bridge.
Corrections:
At 1:45 I mention John Roebling was the architect of the Brooklyn Bridge. He was actually the chief civil engineer.
At 2:28 I mention Boss Tweed was the mayor of New York City, but he was the corrupt political leader of Tammany Hall.
At 4:30 I mention Emily Roebling was John Roebling's wife. She was actually Washington Roebling's wife (I was correct the first time).
From Wikipedia:
The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City and is one of the oldest roadway bridges in the United States. Started in 1869 and completed fourteen years later in 1883, it connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. It has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. It was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge, but it was later dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge, a name coming from an earlier January 25, 1867, letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and formally so named by the city government in 1915. Since opening, it has become an icon of New York City and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.

★ About Bernie:
Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

More info via Wikipedia:
Homelessness in the United States of America is an area of concern for social service providers, government officials, policy professionals, and society at large. Although the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in January 2012 annual point-in-time count found that 633,782 people across the United States were homeless, other counts vary widely. In a recent approximation, an estimated 1.6 million unduplicated persons used transitional housing or emergency shelters. Of these people, approximately 1/3 are members of households with children, a nine percent increase since 2007. Another approximation is from a study done by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, which states that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2007). With 2007 as a benchmark, the data from the report showed a 6.8 percent decline in homelessness among individuals, a 3.7 percent decline of homeless families, a 13.1 percent decline of the unsheltered homeless population, and a 19.3 percent decline in persons experiencing chronic homelessness. Determining even an approximate count of homeless people is quite difficult, even more so when it comes to those that are under the age of 21. Adolescents, teens, and runaways seem to fall through the crack; so many go unaccounted for. Many of the youth living on the streets do not want to be counted for various reasons. Therefore, agencies that do count, use different methods and techniques that make an accurate count that much more difficult.
One out of 50 children or 1.5 million children in America will be homeless each year. In 2013 that number jumped to one out of 30 children, or 2.5 million. There were an estimated 57,849 homeless veterans estimated in the United States during January 2013; or 12 percent of all homeless adults. Just under 8 percent of homeless U.S. veterans are female. Texas, California and Florida have the highest numbers of unaccompanied homeless youth under the age of 18; comprising 58% of the total homeless under 18 youth population.
Because of turnover in the homeless population, the total number of people who experience homelessness for at least a few nights during the course of a year is thought to be considerably higher than point-in-time counts. A 2000 study estimated the number of such people to be between 2.3 million and 3.5 million. According to Amnesty International USA, vacant houses outnumber homeless people by five times.
