Thousands of Bats Flying into the Night from University of Florida Bat Houses, Gainesville
Who let the bats out? Florida continues to amaze me with cool things like watching bats depart from the evening from what's claimed to be the largest bat house in the United States. The original bat house had the capacity of 200,000 and the newly erected one in Oct. 2009 can hold up to 400,000. The smaller one is to be used as a bat maternity ward, at least that's what I've read. The Bat Houses are located on the northwest corner of Lake Alice at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Take Museum Road around the lake.

Raw GoPro footage of the world's largest bat houses located in Gainesville, Florida. Housing over 300,000 bats, these bats fly out and swarm the area about 15 minutes after sunset for about 20 minutes. They come out if it's 65 degrees or warmer, year round.

See the bats emerge from their bat houses at the University of Florida in Gainesville at sunset on March 28, 2017. A colony of about 400,000 bats lives in these houses. See them swirl around above us and then create clouds of bats up in the sky.

Lake Alice is a small lake on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida, United States.
The lake is a wildlife area and is one of the few areas in incorporated Gainesville where one may view live alligators. The lake also harbors a population of Florida softshell turtles. The university's bat house is near the lake.[1] The Baughman Center sits on the southwest bank of the lake. On Lake Alice's northern side, there is a boardwalk that leads visitors through the woods and swamp to a viewing platform.
