Part 3 FSCJ Environmental Science Field Trip to UNF
Professor Petersen, of Florida State College at Jacksonville, explains, during a field trip to the University of North Florida campus, the many aspects of differing ecosystems that encompass a large and protected wooded area of the nature trail at the entrance to the campus. One can take the mile and a half trip along the trail, and see how varied, from one area to the next, the conditions are that support life.
University of North Florida...Your Journey Starts Here!
The University of North Florida has a national reputation for academic excellence. With class sizes averaging 30 students or less, students and professors form close working relationships that allow them to conduct research together, form mentorships that last long after graduation and receive individualized attention that is rare at state universities. Transformational Learning Opportunities allow students to dig into their studies with real-life applications of classroom work. UNF students work hands-on in the community or travel abroad to learn from other cultures. Visit unf.edu to learn more about UNF!
06 Alyssa Bourgoyne PK30
Alyssa Bourgoyne moved to Jacksonville in 2012 after spending much of her childhood in the suburbs of Ann Arbor, Michigan. After enrolling at the University of North Florida, she approached university officials to allow her to study environmental issues and community engagement—a major they did not offer. Upon review, she was hand-selected to create an environmental studies program. She graduated with honors in spring 2014. Her desire to connect people with the outdoors helped her secure an internship with Jacksonville’s Parks and Recreation Department. Guided by her entrepreneurial spirit, she approached JaxParks to create an online, interactive amenities map to better assist the community. In 2013, she coordinated a start-up environmental nonprofit designed to improve Jacksonville neighborhoods and waterways, spearheaded by Groundwork USA. In her spare time, Alyssa enjoys volunteering at river, creek, and park cleanups, tree plantings, hiking, and biking.
Her presentation is called Restoring Creeks: Our land and water conditions affect our quality of life.
On June 18, 2015, PB&J Jacksonville hosted Pecha Kucha: Year of the River in collaboration with MOCA Jacksonville as a public program for the Museum's featured exhibition Southern Exposure: Portraits of a Changing Landscape and as part of Cultural Fusion's year-long celebration Year of the River.

Scenic Creek in Jennings State Forest
I found a nice little creek while exploring in the woods at Jennings State Forest. As I got closer I could hear the sound of flowing water. The place is nicely hidden and it is very scenic and peaceful, just a glimpse into some of the nature you can discover in this forest!

SUMMARY
=======
Jacksonville is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Florida and the largest city by area in the contiguous United States. It is the seat of Duval County, with which the city government consolidated in 1968. Consolidation gave Jacksonville its great size and placed most of its metropolitan population within the city limits. With an estimated population of 892,062 as of 2017, Jacksonville is also the most populous city in the southeastern United States. The Jacksonville metropolitan area has a population of 1,631,488 and is the fourth largest in Florida.Jacksonville is centered on the banks of the St. Johns River in the First Coast region of northeast Florida, about 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia state line and 340 miles (550 km) north of Miami. The Jacksonville Beaches communities are along the adjacent Atlantic coast. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, and in 1564 was the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. Under British rule, settlement grew at the narrow point in the river where cattle crossed, known as Wacca Pilatka to the Seminole and the Cow Ford to the British. A platted town was established there in 1822, a year after the United States gained Florida from Spain; it was named after Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and seventh President of the United States.
Harbor improvements since the late 19th century have made Jacksonville a major military and civilian deep-water port. Its riverine location facilitates Naval Station Mayport, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the U.S. Marine Corps Blount Island Command, and the Port of Jacksonville, Florida's third largest seaport. Jacksonville's military bases and the nearby Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay form the third largest military presence in the United States. Significant factors in the local economy include services such as banking, insurance, healthcare and logistics. As with much of Florida, tourism is important to the Jacksonville area, particularly tourism related to golf. People from Jacksonville may be called Jacksonvillians or Jaxsons (also spelled Jaxons).
