Exploring Holy Ground Battlefield with TROY Archaeology
Troy University students, in partnership with the University of South Alabama and the Poarch Creek Band of Indians, recently had the opportunity to examine a rare archaeological site in Lowndes County, Ala. The Holy Ground Battlefield was the site of an 1813 battle between Creeks, led by William Weatherford (also known as Red Eagle) and American forces. Take a look as TROY’s students and faculty discover artifacts that help recreate an important moment in Alabama history.

Where Alabama Began: Archaeology at Old St. Stephens presented by George Shorter
Thursday, December 21 at 12:00. George Shorter
presented Where Alabama Began: Archaeology at Old St. Stephens. From fort to trading post to territorial capital, St. Stephens is the birthplace of Alabama. However, the town’s story is
one that is unknown to most Alabamians. By 1818, St. Stephens boasted 400 buildings and a population of at least 3,000. The town was named the territorial capital of Alabama in 1817, and hosted the inaugural meeting of the territorial legislature in 1818. By the early 1820s, after the capital relocated, the town began to decline. It had virtually vanished by the beginning of the Civil War. This month, archaeologist George Shorter will shed light on St. Stephen’s story through exciting new archaeological discoveries.
George Shorter earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture and a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology both from Louisiana State University. He worked as a landscape architect for almost thirty years and then joined the University of South Alabama’s Center for Archaeological Studies where he supervised numerous archaeological projects including research at Fort Morgan, Dog River near Mobile, and the Creek Indian village
Fusihatchee near Montgomery. Shorter began research at the historic site of Old St. Stephens in Washington County in
1997. He continues his work today with the St. Stephens Historical Commission.

Alabama is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama is the 30th largest by area and the 24th-most populous of the U.S. states. With a total of 1,500 miles (2,400 km) of inland waterways, Alabama has among the most of any state.Alabama is nicknamed the Yellowhammer State, after the state bird. Alabama is also known as the Heart of Dixie and the Cotton State. The state tree is the longleaf pine, and the state flower is the camellia. Alabama's capital is Montgomery. The largest city by population is Birmingham, which has long been the most industrialized city; the largest city by land area is Huntsville. The oldest city is Mobile, founded by French colonists in 1702 as the capital of French Louisiana. From the American Civil War until World War II, Alabama, like many states in the southern U.S., suffered economic hardship, in part because of its continued dependence on agriculture. Similar to other former slave states, Alabamian legislators employed Jim Crow laws to disenfranchise and otherwise discriminate against African Americans from the end of the Reconstruction Era up until at least the 1970s. Despite the growth of major industries and urban centers, white rural interests dominated the state legislature from 1901 to the 1960s. During this time, urban interests and African Americans were markedly under-represented. Following World War II, Alabama grew as the state's economy changed from one primarily based on agriculture to one with diversified interests. The state's economy in the 21st century is based on management, automotive, finance, manufacturing, aerospace, mineral extraction, healthcare, education, retail, and technology.
Old Traditions in a New State: Creek Families in Alabama by Alex Colvin
Colvin’s presentation focuses on the Creek community that formed in the Mobile-Tensaw region. She examines the continuation of Creek traditions, particularly matrilineal inheritance, as their property and community became legally incorporated into the state of Alabama in 1819. Using court and legal records, Colvin tells the stories of the Creeks as they utilized wills, the Orphans Court, and the Alabama Supreme Court to uphold traditional customs even as aspects of their everyday lives changed.
Alex Colvin is the Public Programs Curator at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. She earned her B.A. from
Samford University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Auburn University. Her dissertation, titled “The Sehoy Legacy: Kinship, Gender, and Property in a Tensaw Creek Community, 1783-1851” won the Distinguished Dissertation Award from Auburn University.

ECLAP promotional video, the aim and tools of eclap service
The evolution of semantic technology and related impact on internet services and solutions, such as social media, mobile technologies, etc., have de-termined a strong evolution in digital content services. Traditional content based online services are leaving the space to a new generation of solutions. In this paper, the experience of one of those new generation digital content service is presented, namely ECLAP (European Collected Library of Artistic Performance, It has been partially founded by the European Commission and includes/aggregates more than 35 international institutions. ECLAP provides services and tools for content management and user networking. They are based on a set of newly researched technologies and features in the area of semantic computing technologies capable of mining and establishing relationships among content elements, concepts and users. On this regard, ECLAP is a place in which these new solutions are made available for interested institutions.
ECLAP has been set up as co-funded by the European Union ICT Policy Support Programme as part of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme, Theme CIP-ICT-PSP.2009.2.2, Grant Agreement N°250481. The main goal of ECLAP is the content aggregation and metadata semantic enrichment for Europeana. Europeana collects cultural heritage metadata coming from several aggregators (as ECLAP), institutions, universities, foundations, museums, schools of art, that represent the European cultural heritage. Europeana foundation and portal do not collect content items files, but only classification information (i.e., metadata), including the original URLs to the content. These URLs refer to the original content owner and/or to the content aggregator. According to this, ECLAP performs cultural enrichment and promotion of European culture, and provides support for relevant improvements in learning and research in the field of performing arts. At the same time, ECLAP is a live lab in which several new technologies and solutions in the area of semantic computing and social media have been developed and put under trial of the final users and institutions. On this regard, ECLAP is open for both content and research results experimentations, and presently comprises more than 35 prestigious international institutions; 18 of them started since ECLAP early set up in the 2010, others joined ECLAP successively as affiliated and networking partners of ECLAP. They are representative of many different cultures and countries of the world such as: University of Florence, Dario Fo & Franca Rame Archive, University of Rome La Sapienza, Liber Liber, Fondazione Fabbrica Europa, Italy; Beeld en Geluid (Sound & Vision), University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo do Porto, Portugal; Festival International de Films de Femmes de Créteil, France; The Institute of Polish Culture University of Warsaw, Grotowski Institute, Poland; Museu de les Arts Escèniques Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, Universidad de Castilla La Mancha, Spain; La Bellone House of Performing Arts, Belgium; MUZEUM of Ljubljana, Slovenia; Hungarian Theatre Institute, Hungary; Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, University of Cambridge, University of Glasgow, Coventry University, UK; Spain; Festival Cielos del Infinito, Chili; University of South Africa, South Africa; Department of Information Systems for Arts and Humanities, Russia.

Civil War Alabama, presented by Chris McIlwain
In his presentation, McIlwain discussed the experiences of Alabamians during the Civil War, based on decades of exhaustive research that draws on a vast trove of primary sources such as letters, newspapers, and personal journals. He summarized many of his controversial findings and offered compelling new explanations for how Alabama’s white citizens came to take up arms against the federal government.
Chris McIlwain grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, where his father worked as an aerospace engineer at NASA. After graduating from Grissom High School in 1973, he attended the University of Alabama, graduating from its law school in 1980. Since then he has practiced law in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, primarily as a litigator. He is the author of Civil War Alabama, which has recently been published by the University of Alabama Press. This landmark book sheds invigorating new light on the causes, the course, and the outcomes in Alabama of the nation’s greatest drama and trauma.

SUMMARY
=======
The University of Alabama (Alabama or UA) is a public research university in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is the flagship of the University of Alabama System. Established in 1820, the University of Alabama (UA) is the oldest and largest of the public universities in Alabama. The university offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral degrees. The only publicly supported law school in the state is at UA. Other academic programs unavailable elsewhere in Alabama include doctoral programs in anthropology, communication and information sciences, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work.
As one of the first public universities established in the early 19th century southwestern frontier of the United States, the University of Alabama has left a vast cultural imprint on the state, region and nation over the past two centuries. The school was a center of activity during the American Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. The University of Alabama varsity football program (nicknamed the Crimson Tide), which was inaugurated in 1892, ranks as one of 10 winningest programs in US history. In a 1913 speech then-president George H. Denny extolled the university as the capstone of the public school system in the state [of Alabama], lending the university its current nickname, The Capstone. The University of Alabama has consistently been ranked as one of the top 50 public universities in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report. In addition, The University of Alabama has produced a total of 51 Goldwater Scholars, 15 Rhodes Scholars, 16 Truman Scholars, 32 Hollings Scholars and 11 Boren Scholars.
Africatown and The Alabama-Benin Trade Forum | AWARE! | WSRE
Host Dee Dee Sharp and her guests discuss the relationship between Alabama and the African nation of Benin, and how the relationship began with the establishment of Africatown, a community of former slaves. Also known as Africatown USA and Plateau, it is a historic settlement located north of Mobile, Alabama. It was formed by West Africans who were among the last known illegal shipment of slaves to the U.S. from Africa in 1860, after the Atlantic slave trade had been banned. Creating their own community, these people retained their West African language and customs for many years following the end of the Civil War. The panel includes Elder Makinde A. Gbolahan and Henry Haseeb with the Alabama-Benin Trade Forum, and, via telephone, Dr. Sharon Ingram, CEO and Chairman of the Alabama-Benin Trade Forum. In addition to the historical overview, the panelists also discuss the opportunities that exist for trade and cultural exchange with Benin and West Africa.
