The Rotunda Renovation
The capitals atop the Rotunda's columns were shrouded in protective netting after it was discovered that they were crumbling from age and a variety of other issues.
Thomas Jefferson intended the Rotunda, which he called a temple of knowledge, to be the centerpiece of the Academical Village; it housed the heart of the University operations—the library and classrooms. The Rotunda and associated grounds are now in critical need of extensive repairs. The renovation, which began in May 2012, will span several years.
What specific repairs and renovations are being done?
The Rotunda renovation includes extensive infrastructure upgrades and exterior repairs. The initial phases are addressing conditions that threaten the building's integrity and include significant roof repairs, column capital restoration, masonry repairs, and window restoration. Panels in the Dome Room will be replaced with a better acoustical control system; lightning protection will be greatly improved; and a new elevator installed.
Later phases of the project will entail improvements to the Rotunda's interior infrastructure and restoration of the surrounding landscape. The building's aging infrastructure, including plumbing, electrical, audio/visual, heating/air conditioning, and fire protection, will be upgraded. Portions of the building may be adapted to allow for classroom use. The current total estimated cost is $50.6 million.
How will the University pay for the Rotunda renovation?
The University envisions the $50.6 million project as a private-public effort. A small portion of the University's endowment and annual gift funding is available for historic preservation projects such as the Rotunda renovation and is being used to launch the initial planning and early execution of the renovation's multiple phases. The majority of the private share of the project will be raised through the University's fundraising efforts.
University leaders have also worked to secure support in the public arena. In late 2010 U.Va. petitioned the Virginia General Assembly to provide its share of the Rotunda renovation. In April 2011 the General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to allocate $2.7 million for repairs to the roof of the Rotunda. The remainder of the $26 million request to the state is pending further legislative action.
What are the next steps in the Rotunda renovation?
To assist in the planning process and provide input for developing design guidelines, the Office of the Architect, as part of the first phase of the work, convened a colloquium of experienced preservation professionals, responsible government agency representatives, faculty, graduate students, members of the Board of Visitors, senior administrators, and special guests. Participants responded to a draft recommendation for restoring the Rotunda and the rest of the Academical Village that was prepared by the Office of the Architect for the University and its Historic Preservation Advisory Board. The final version of this recommendation was presented to the Board of Visitors at their June 2011 meeting. The board accepted the conclusions that the Rotunda and the rest of the Academical Village should be planned in accordance with standards acceptable to maintain the World Heritage Site designation, as well as the Rotunda's National Historic Landmark status.

Monticello and the University of Virginia in ... (UNESCO/NHK)
Thomas Jefferson (1743--1826), author of the American Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States, was also a talented architect of neoclassical buildings. He designed Monticello (1769--1809), his plantation home, and his ideal 'academical village' (1817--26), which is still the heart of the University of Virginia. Jefferson's use of an architectural vocabulary based upon classical antiquity symbolizes ...

The University of Virginia ( Most Beautiful College Campuses In America)
The University of Virginia, frequently referred to simply as Virginia, is a public-private flagship and research university.
The University of Virginia could be said to have the presidential touch, as Founding Father Thomas Jefferson was responsible for its conception and – after the school’s establishment in 1819 – the development of its awe-inspiring campus. Jefferson’s original vision still makes an impact on the University of Virginia’s now 1,682-acre grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia, most notably through the stunning, Palladian-style Rotunda – which in its design draws inspiration from Rome’s celebrated Pantheon. Finished in 1826, the Rotunda holds the honor of being among just a trio of man-made modern U.S. structures to be designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In 1976 the campus as a whole was also named “the proudest achievement of American architecture in the past 200 years” by the American Institute of Architects.

The University of Virginia (U.Va. or UVA), frequently referred to simply as Virginia, is a public-private flagship and research university.[1][2][3] Founded in 1819 by Declaration of Independence author Thomas Jefferson, UVA is known for its historic foundations, student-run honor code, and secret societies.
UNESCO designated UVA as America's first and only collegiate World Heritage Site in 1987, an honor shared with nearby Monticello.[7] The university was established in 1819, and its original governing Board of Visitors included Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Monroe was the sitting President of the United States at the time of its foundation. Former Presidents Jefferson and Madison were UVA's first two rectors and the Academical Village and original courses of study were conceived and designed by Jefferson.
The university's research endeavors are highly recognized. In 2015, Science honored UVA faculty for discovering two of its top 10 annual scientific breakthroughs; from the fields of Medicine and Psychology.[8] UVA is one of 62 institutions in the Association of American Universities (AAU), an organization of preeminent North American research universities. It is the only AAU member university located in Virginia. UVA is classified as a Research University with Very High Research by the Carnegie Foundation, and is considered Virginia's flagship university by the College Board.[9][10][11] The university was the first non-founding member, and the first university of the American South, to attain AAU membership in 1904. Companies founded by UVA students and alumni, such as Reddit, generate more than $1.6 trillion in annual revenue – equivalent to an economy the size of Canada, 10th-largest in the world.[12][13]
UVA's academic strength is broad, with 121 majors across the eight undergraduate and three professional schools.[14] Students compete in 26 collegiate sports and UVA leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in men's NCAA team national championships with 17. UVA is second in women's NCAA titles with 7. UVA was awarded the Capital One Cup in 2015 after fielding the top overall men's athletics programs in the nation.[15]
Students come to attend the university in Charlottesville from all 50 states and 147 countries.[16][17][18] The historic campus occupies 1,682-acre (2.6 sq mi; 680.7 ha), many of which are internationally protected by UNESCO and widely recognized as some of the most beautiful collegiate grounds in the country.[19] UVA additionally maintains 2,913 acres southeast of the city, at Morven Farm.[20] The university also manages the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia, and until 1972 operated George Mason University and the University of Mary Washington in Northern Virginia.
