You NEED to visit KEY WEST. USA's Southern most point. Florida Keys & Key West Travel Guide.
We spent a few days travelling the Florida Keys thanks to
We started our day at one the best known State parks in the region called Bahia Honda State Park. There are a couple of really interested things about the park, one is that the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico are just a few metres apart and you can see both at the same time. The second thing is the amazing abandoned old rail bridge that goes across the water. We took up the drone to get better shots. To find out more about the park visit here:
After this we headed to Key West to check out the nightly Sunset Celebration that takes place at Mallory Square in downtown Key West. Here you’ll find vendors, food, drinks and buskers along with an absolutely stunning sunset.
We picked things up the next day as we made our way around Key West to check out the amazing southern architecture, the many chickens, and the awesome attractions. We started off at one of the best known ones, the Hemingway House Museum where Ernest Hemingway lived during the 1930s, we also got to see many of the cats that live on the property and are descendants of Hemingway’s cats.
Before heading to our last location we checked out the southernmost point in the continental USA which can be found in Key West.
Lastly we visited the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, which had many different species of butterflies and birds in a beautiful indoor garden.

Southernmost Point in the U.S.A. - Key West, Florida
There is a discussion here on if Key West, Florida is truly the Southernmost point of the continental U.S.A. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
The Southernmost point was originally just marked with a sign, which was often stolen. In response to this, the city of Key West erected the now famous concrete buoy in 1983. The concrete buoy is actually an old sewer junction that was dug up in the area and found too heavy and large to move, so it was painted up to look like a buoy. Today it is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West, Florida.

KEY WEST - Florida, USA
A whole day spent in Key West in Florida, United States of America.
The day in Key West started cloudy and a bit rainy, but it soon cleared up and the sun was shining like we never expected.
We visited many places in key west, some of them we skipped because in the morning the weather wasn't that good but we saw the major places in these islands.
Key West, a U.S. island city, is part of the Florida Keys archipelago. It's also Florida's southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses, it’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. It’s known more for its coral reefs – destinations for diving and snorkeling – than for its beaches.

Battle of the Conch Republic | Key West, FL
Today we stopped at the Coral Castle and then drove down to Key West to (unknowingly) catch the Great Battle of the Conch Republic.
Key West Secession and Great Battle History (paraphrased):
In March 1982, the US set up a roadblock on the only road into the keys (in hopes to catch drugs) but it really just seriously inconvenienced locals and discouraged tourists from going to the Keys. So, Key West staged a mock-rebellion on April 23 where their military (just some locals on a boat) attacked the US Coast Guard Cutter with water balloons, conch fritters (delicious!), and stale Cuban bread in a mock-effort to secede. The Coast Guard squashed the rebellion by spraying them with fire hoses. The military surrendered and then demanded foreign aid (which they're still waiting for). Every year since, on the week surrounding April 23, they reenact the battle and have lots of fun events to celebrate their independence.
By the way, shortly after the battle, the roadblock was removed. :)
You should go. It's fun. Check here for dates and times:

Florida Keys and 7 mile Bridge 4K
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.
The climate of the Keys is defined as tropical savanna according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, such as Totten Key. The total land area is 137.3 square miles (356 km2). As of the 2010 census the population was 73,090 with an average density of 532.34 per square mile (205.54/km2), although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys. The US Census population estimate for 2014 is 77,136.
The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.
The Florida Keys are the exposed portions of an ancient coral reef. The northernmost island arising from the ancient reef formation is Elliott Key, in Biscayne National Park. North of Elliott Key are several small transitional keys, composed of sand built up around small areas of exposed ancient reef. Further north, Key Biscayne and places north are barrier islands, built up of sand.
The Florida Keys have taken their present form as the result of the drastic changes in sea level associated with recent glaciations or ice ages. Beginning some 130,000 years ago the Sangamonian Stage raised sea levels to approximately 25 feet (7.5 m) above the current level. All of southern Florida was covered by a shallow sea. Several parallel lines of reef formed along the edge of the submerged Florida plateau, stretching south and then west from the present Miami area to what is now the Dry Tortugas. This reef formed the Key Largo limestone that is exposed on the surface from Soldier Key (midway between Key Biscayne and Elliott Key) to the southeast portion of Big Pine Key and the Newfound Harbor Keys. The types of coral that formed Key Largo limestone can be identified on the exposed surface of these keys.
Starting about 100,000 years ago the Wisconsin glaciation began lowering sea levels, exposing the coral reef and surrounding marine sediments. By 15,000 years ago the sea level had dropped to 300 to 350 feet (110 m) below the contemporary level. The exposed reefs and sediments were heavily eroded. Acidic water, which can result from decaying vegetation, dissolves limestone. Some of the dissolved limestone redeposited as a denser cap rock, which can be seen as outcrops overlying the Key Largo and Miami limestones throughout the Keys. The limestone that eroded from the reef formed oolites in the shallow sea behind the reef, and together with the skeletal remains of bryozoans, formed the Miami limestone that is the current surface bedrock of the lower Florida peninsula and the lower keys from Big Pine Key to Key West. To the west of Key West the ancient reef is covered by recent calcareous sand.
Just offshore of the Florida Keys along the edge of the Florida Straits is the Florida Reef (also known as the Florida Reef Tract). The Florida Reef extends 270 km from Fowey Rocks just east of Soldier Key to just south of the Marquesas Keys. It is the third-largest barrier reef system in the world

The Best of Key West
If the island of Key West was a bar, it would be called the “Ends of the Earth” bar and rightly so. There is only one road leading into Key West and it is 113 miles from the mainland of Florida to the city limits.
It’s a 4 hour drive from Miami, 3.5 hours by ferry from Ft Myers and just 50 minutes to fly from Miami. But no matter how you get here, you will soon see it is unlike any place else within the continental USA.
It never freezes here nor does it really ever get cold here. Even in January, the average temperature is 69 degrees and usually in the mid 70s. That makes this a year around destination however the summer is the most active time period with lots to do. We will show you some the most popular activities available to visitors.
The most popular things to do all revolve around water. For divers, the Great Florida Reef is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. It extends up to 4 miles out from the shore and extends from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas, a length of 170 miles. There are several sunken ships to dive on as well.
Fishing is a huge draw to Key West. You can charter a boat to take you where the fish are plentiful. You can stay within short distance of the island or you can head for the deep waters where the big fish live.
Playing IN the water is available for all ages. There are both private and public beaches scattered around the island. The largest beach open to the public is Smathers Beach. It is over half a mile in length and is on the south side of the island right next to Roosevelt Blvd, the perimeter road around the island.
Higgs Beach is a little further down the road, (Roosevelt turns into Atlantic Blvd). The beach surrounds the Key West Garden Club, one of the island's last remaining free tourist attractions
If you would rather see the water from above, parasailing is the way to do it. Key West looks different when you are floating 300 feet in the air. It is pretty quiet up there too. There are several providers to choose from.
For those who prefer who wish to stay land based, there is still plenty to do. While there are plenty of places to stay on the island, you are required to visit Duval street, the narrow mile long main drag. The famous as well as those of us not so famous have walked this street and spent time in the bars and eateries that line the street. Start at the south end where you can dip a toe into the Straits of Florida (part of the Atlantic Ocean). Walk a little over a mile north and you can dip a toe in the Gulf of Mexico. Arrive at the Gulf side near dusk and you can wander over to Mallory Square where watching the sunset has become a nightly ritual. More on Mallory Square later.
While you are in this part of town, catch a ride on the conch train. They will show you all kinds of interesting locations on the island including Hemingway’s house, Audubon House and Gardens, Key West Lighthouse Museum, Harry S. Truman Little White House, Key West Aquarium, and the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum. You can always come back to these places on your own at a later time now that you know where they are located.
Key West is a great destination to visit and truly has something for everyone. The locals are friendly and laid back. Visiting here is almost like visiting another country but you are still on U S soil. It will take several days to do everything but no matter what you do and where you go, the evenings belong to Mallory Square.
While the sun setting into the ocean is a draw all of its own, the spectacle of the square stands alone in its uniqueness. The crowd is festive and there are multiple performers scattered around the square. Whether it is balloon art, juggling acts, music or sword swallowing, you can find this and much more here at Mallory Square.
The Worst of Key West
While our little Key at the end of a 100 mile strip of keys is a wonderful place to visit, there are some things that blur the picture of the perfect getaway.
Just getting here can be more of a challenge than desired. There is only one way in (and out) by car and that is along the 113 mile highway between the mainland and Key West. The current 4 lane road is a big improvement over the 2 lane road that served the Keys up through the first part of the 70’s but it still takes 4 hours to get here from the mainland. There is a ferry from the Ft Myers area that also takes nearly 4 hours. Or you can fly in - 50 minutes from Miami. Try to enjoy the journey.
The weather can be a deciding factor on time of year you want to visit. Hurricane season can have its challenges. The season officially runs from June 1 to the end of November but the peak time for storms generally occur in September.
Florida Keys Special 2019 | Art Loft 713 Full Episode
FLORIDA KEYS - Art Loft takes a dive into the Florida Keys - and this time, quite literally!
First up, photographer Stephen Frink is the conduit for those who can't travel underwater. But do the same rules of photography apply on the ocean floor?
Then we travel to Islamorada where a conceptual cartoonist evokes emotions we've always had, but may not have ever been able to articulate.
In Marathon, a water sports park has a message about the human impacts on the environment - and they are using street art to illustrate it.
As we move into the Lower Keys, a stained and fused glass artist in Stock Island is using an intricate hand painted technique that is not often used.
And finally, we hit Key West where we meet author and historian Arlo Haskell. Did you know cigar manufacturing was actually pioneered by the Jewish community in Key West and not the Cuban community? We discover this and more in his latest book.

FLORIDA | Episode 18 | Key West, Florida 2018 | Opening Week Lobster Season
Florida lobster season officially began August 6th, 2018 and we we fortunate enough to make the 13 hour drive down to the farthest point in the continental U.S. to take part. Join us as Da Spencer Adventure meets up with a bunch of new friends at the epicenter of Lobstering in the southern United States. It was our first try at it and I must say we did pretty good. The plan was to find enough keepers to enjoy at least one good lobster meal for the family. Thanks to Captain Frank and the crew of the Lady Elaine, we were able to bring in a great catch! Ensure you are properly licensed and adhere to all State and Federal regulations. As always, leave the land and sea better than you found it for future generations to come.

ys are also home to unique animal species, including the American crocodile, Key deer, protected by the National Key Deer Refuge, and the Key Largo woodrat. The Keys is the northernmost range of the American crocodile, which is endemic from South America to Panama, north to the Florida Keys. The Key Largo Woodrat is found only in the northern part of its namesake island, and is a focus of management activities in Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. About 70 miles (110 km) west of Key West is Dry Tortugas National Park, one of the most isolated and therefore well-preserved in the world.
The waters surrounding the Keys are part of a protected area known as the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Tropical cyclones[edit]
The Keys are occasionally threatened by tropical storms and hurricanes, leading to evacuations to the mainland. Hurricane Georges, after tearing up much of the Caribbean, caused damage and extensive flooding in the Lower Keys in 1998, before making landfall in Mississippi. In 2005, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma affected the Keys (although none made a direct hit), causing widespread damage and flooding. The most severe hurricane to hit the area was the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, a Category 5 hurricane.
Tropical cyclones present special dangers and challenges to the entire Keys. Because no area of the islands is more than 20 feet (6.1 m) above sea level (and many are only a few feet elevation), and water surrounds the islands, nearly every neighborhood is subject to flooding as well as hurricane winds. In response, many homes in the Keys are built on concrete stilts with the first floor being not legally habitable and enclosed by breakaway walls that are not strongly attached to the rest of the house. Nonetheless, Monroe County, as reported in the Federal Register, has estimated that there are between 8,000 and 12,000 illegal enclosures inhabited by people.[13]
Because of the threat from storm surge, evacuations are routinely ordered when the National Weather Service issues a hurricane watch or warning, and are sometimes ordered for a tropical storm warning. Evacuation of the Keys depends on causeways and the two-lane highway to the mainland. Time estimates for evacuating the entire Keys range from 12 to 24 hours. Evacuation estimates are significant in emergency planning, of course, but also because they are a factor in local and state regulations for controlling development. The building permit allocation was increased in 2005 when local governments reduced estimates for evacuation
The Conch Republic — Independence from America
In 1982, the United States set up a border blockade on Highway 1 in the northern most part of the Florida Keys, effectively shutting down traffic to the archipelago. This angered the local government of the Florida Keys so much, that they decided to secede from the Union.
