Gibraltar (25.09.2013) Upper Rock Nature Reserve
Este dia foi dedicado a uma visita a Gibraltar, particularmente à reserva natural no rochedo. Foi uma entrada engraçada pois tivemos a sorte do trânsito estar parado quando um avião se preparava para levantar voo. Saí da carrinha para ir filmar este acontecimento pouco comum para nós.
Optámos por fazer a visita guiada numa pequena carrinha turística que nos levou a ver as atracções principais no rochedo. Escolhemos esta modalidade porque no caso de subirmos no teleférico, pagaríamos o mesmo valor e ainda tínhamos de andar a pé durante vários km's para ver as atrações incluídas no título de visita.
Durante a visita à última atracção onde a carrinha iria parar decidimos mudar de planos e fazer a restante visita a pé já que o percurso era a descer pela encosta. Desta forma poderíamos ver os locais restantes onde a carrinha não passava, de forma mais descontraída e sem pressas.
Com ajuda do roteiro lá fomos percorrendo o resto do percurso turístico até chegar à Main Street que é como uma Meca do consumismo por não se pagar IVA.
O ponto alto foi sem dúvida a interacção com os macacos de Gibraltar (Macaca Sylvanus; Barbary Ape) e é aqui o único local da Europa onde se podem encontrar primatas em estado selvagem. São protegidos por lei pelo governo britânico e cada um tem nome e chip de identificação.

Today I went on this newly opened walk from the town to the upper rock,i did not go up to the very top but I must say they have done a very good job to open this once difficult walk to now a more of a stroll.

It is three hundred years since Spain ceded the rule of Gibraltar to Britain following the War of the Spanish Succession. According to legend, British rule will last as long as there are monkeys on Gibraltar and for now, it is the only place in Europe where wild monkeys roam.

It was raining the entire time during our day trip to Gibraltar. I still managed to get some cool shots of the Barbary Apes and the sun came out for a short while to let me film a big of neighboring Spain.

The astonishing huge chunk of limestone (5km long up to 1.6km wide and 426m high) rising up from the Mediterranean was one of the mythic Pillars of Hercules. The eastern side is made up of sheer cliffs with sandy beaches forming the perimeter. The western slopes are gentler and much of the lower half is the city, with the upper parts there is a large nature reserve.
Gibraltar has been a British colony since 1704 with an engaging mix of British Mediterranean the buildings, culture, style and especially the commerce are British. Legend has it that Britain will retain sovereignty of the rock as long as the famous wild Barbary apes remain.
The Upper Rock reached by either cable car, minibus (tours) or private car there are breathtaking views down to the town, beaches, the Stait of Gibraltar, Bahia de Algeciras and if the weather is clear you can Morocco in detail.
Points of interest, along with the apes, there are dolphins and whales in the bay. Great Siege Tunnels, The Morrish Castle, Military Heritage Centre, St Michael's Cave. Walk through the Main Street, great for shopping if you are missing a little bit of England, with the normal high street stores mixed in with tax free shops. Have lunch or just grab a coffee at the marina (Ocean Village).
Gibraltar is located at the entrance of the Mediterranean, connected to Spain via La Linea. After passing through immigration and customs, the road crosses the runway of Gibraltar airport.

Gibraltar Peak Hike, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
About a 45 minute drive from Canberra lies the wonderful Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve which holds many treasures, including one of my favourites, Gibraltar Peak. While you are on a steady incline the whole way up to the peak, it doesn't feel too challenging. The views and amazing 400 million year old rocks along the way will definitely not disappoint.
