Vietnam Travel Guide: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh
Gorgeous beaches, fascinating and complicated history, incredible food, lush nature; Vietnam is a country that truly has it all. Whether this country is first or fiftieth on your list, our travel guide has all the information you need to know if you’re planning (or dreaming of planning!) a trip to Vietnam.
Leave your expectations behind if you’re heading to Vietnam: here, you’ll eat noodles for breakfast, do your shopping in the middle of the night, and discover a country with a new story around every corner.
Hanoi more than delivers on urban excitement. If you’re looking for unique and mouth-watering food, the night markets of the Vietnamese capital should be your very first stop. You can enjoy a zippy ride on a scooter, all the street-food you can eat, and a night exploring the rapid development of this modern city. From trendy clubs to traditional puppet shows, experience a nightlife that’s all Vietnam’s own, and eat and drink the night away with locals and visitors alike!
Of course, Vietnam isn’t all fast-paced cities and rooftop bars. For a slower pace, head to Ha Long Bay and sail alongside limestone islets, with their lush rainforests towering above your head. The water is emerald-green, matching the vibrant greenery, and a sailing excursion here is like nothing else you’ve experienced before! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islets of Ha Long Bay are said have been thrown into the bay by a dragon protecting the people of Vietnam. Take a junk boat tour for a close encounter, or try scuba diving or snorkelling in the bay!
You’ll find a new adventure around every corner in Vietnam. From breakfast in the Bình Tây Market and a secret tunnel system in Ho Chi Minh City, to sailing along the Mekong Delta in a traditional basket boat, you can find your perfect trip - no matter what that looks like - somewhere in Vietnam.
There’s no time like the present to start planning an adventure of your own in this majestic country, so why not start today? Eating Cao Lau and White Rose Special Vietnamese Cuisine found only in Hoi An, Vietnam
For lunch we headed over to a popular Vietnamese restaurant (Mermaid) in Hoi An, Vietnam to try eating two very unique and local delicacies - Cao Lau (Noodles, pork and greens in a gravy sauce) and White Rose (shrimp dumplings sprinkled with roasted garlic). Both of these dishes are said to have originated from Hoi An - a city know for its culinary delights and cultural attractions.
Urban Legend has it that the unique taste of the Cao Lau comes from an unknown water source (from a Cham well) just outside of the city limits. One of the most tantalizing features of this dish has to do with its udon style thick wheat noodles and five spice caramelized broth that accentuates the taste of the chewy pork and fresh greens.

On the other hand, White rose is safeguarded as a secret recipe held by only one family in Hoi An.
These delicious shrimp dumplings are made out of translucent white dough that is shaped to look like a rose and garnished by flakes of garlic and served with a sweet chili dipping sauce.
Known locally as Banh Bao Vac, the name 'white rose' was apparently given by the French. When examining the Vietnamese dish closely it's easy to see how they came up with the name as the outer section certainly could resemble flower petals.
The stories of the secret well and highly guarded recipes certainly adds an element of allure to both dishes. How accurate either of these claims actually are is something I don't personally know. What matters is that I found both dishes to be absolutely delicious and I ended up eating them both several times while staying in Hoi An.
Overall, we really enjoyed this meal which came close to $5 USD (100,000 Vietnamese Dong). When in Hoi An be sure to enjoy trying White Rose and Cao Lau:
Cao lầu is a regional Vietnamese dish made with noodles, pork, and greens and is only found in the town of Hội An, in the Quang Nam Province of central Vietnam. Its unique taste is rumoured to be contributed by the water from an undisclosed ancient Cham well just outside of the town. This rumour is promulgated in a popular guide book and has become something of an urban legend. It is likely that the origin of Cao Lau in Hoi An goes back to the town's history as a trading port. Prior to the Chinese establishment in Hoi An, in the 17th century, the town was also a centre of Japanese trading activity. The famous Hoi An bridge also dates to this period. Cao Lau noodles are clearly derived from Japanese soba noodles. Although there are some who claim that they are Chinese wheat noodles, they are not made of wheat and have a different texture.
White Rose or banh vac in Vietnamese is a dumpling stuffed with shrimp and spices and then steamed in a shrimp broth. The resulting taste is delicate and just a little bit sweet, the dumplings are topped with fried onions giving it a little crunch and saltiness. A foreign tourist coined the name White Rose when he visited Hoi An and enjoyed the dumpling. Restaurant owners liked this name and decided to adopt it. After that, the dumpling started to appear in restaurants under the name White Rose rather than banh vac.
White Rose dumplings are a a specialty of Hoi An and we have not found them anywhere else. It is said that if visitors have not eaten White Rose dumplings they have not yet enjoyed the taste of the ancient town:
Ăn trưa, chúng tôi đứng đầu trên một nhà hàng nổi tiếng Việt Nam (Nàng tiên cá) ở Hội An, Việt Nam cố gắng ăn hai món ngon rất độc đáo và địa phương - Cao Lầu (mì, thịt lợn và rau xanh trong một nước sốt nước sốt) và White Rose (bánh bao tôm rắc rang tỏi). Cả hai món ăn được cho là có nguồn gốc từ Hội An - một thành phố cho biết ẩm thực và văn hóa hấp dẫn.

Hoi An Vietnam travel
Hội An~!!! That's how i finally step foot into Vietnam.. Most people will have know Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi as a more commonly visited place to go as first timer visiting Vietnam.
But mine it's to this little historical ancient old town which apparently is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Hội An translate to Chinese character means 'peaceful meeting place' and to add up, i didn't even heard before about this place.
So i began planning and searching via Mr Goggle to know EVERYTHING i can do at Hội An. To my surprise, it's seems like there's a good number of exciting activities to do.
That's where my mission start~! I began to initiate and gather about 40 of like-minded travelers from all walks of life, many were my friends and extended family to start planning for this trip.
We liaise with the 'World's Leading Online Travel Agency - dreamtrips.com' to help us plan for a good 4D3N family orientated adventure.
dreamtrips.com are good at what they do. Negotiate the best price for us plus VIP services. So it's all set to GO~
NOW HERE COMES THE BAD PART WHEN WE'RE THERE.
Firstly, I don't know if its me but i couldn't find any typical beef noodle along the street and that really annoys me as i was so looking forward to that. Secondly, like most places in Vietnam, we went during the time where-by the weather it's steaming burning hot.
Nevertheless, it was a fulfilling trip with my friends and family. Checked off an unknown location but definitely if you can't stand a steaming burning hot weather and not having beef pho in Vietnam. Then my verdict DOn't gO hOi An

There are as many variations on this dish as there are households in Hoi An. The noodles are Cao Lau; the way the pork is cooked (or omitted), the greens (the use or absence of mint), the use of lime or chilli jam, these are all variations on a theme.

A Day in the Life of Vietnam's New Crop of Storytellers With Tilo-Kay
If you went to see 'Co Ba Sai Gon' in theater a few months ago, you probably came across Tilo and Kay’s names. They were the creative duo behind the Ngo Thanh Van-produced blockbuster about the shenanigans of an áo dài boutique in 1969 Saigon.
Having been friends since high school, Kay and Tilo formed Tilo-Kay Nguyen, a screenwriting group and workshop that seeks to tell uniquely Vietnam stories.
Saigoneer recently had a chance to hang out with the duo to hear about their creative process, life story and love for all things movies.

This morning I was woken up with a surprise free breakfast in the train from Hanoi to Hue. I take a tour of the train and discover a DJ playing in the dining car. I check-in to my hostel, have some Indian lunch and head for the Imperial City tour, concluding with the best family dinner ever back at the hostel.

Cu Chi Tunnels Experience (daytrip from Ho Chi Minh by local Vietnamese bus) | Vietnam Travel
We spent the day exploring the famous Cu Chi Tunnels which are just a couple of hours outside of Ho Chi Minh City. We took the local Vietnamese buses from Ho Chi Minh City all the way there, it was pretty simple and took around 2.5 hours.
We chose to visit the Ben Duoc tunnels as we'd heard these were a bit quieter and slightly more authentic than the more well-known Ben Dinh tunnels, though this did mean a fair amount of bus travel!
We really enjoyed the visit, Rob found it to be an especially memorable experience since he kept getting stuck in the tiny tunnels!!
To treat ourselves we finished the day with an amazing Egg Coffee!! Our first yet! Egg Coffee was so tasty just like most Vietnamese food.

Ghost Festival Day-Praying For The Hungry Ghosts-Saigon Vietnam
Throughout East Asia and Southeast Asia during the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar it's believed that the gates of hell are opened so as to allow ghosts to wander the earth for the month. These ghosts are said to have experienced a particularly bad death, or do not have anyone praying for them in the after life. Followers of Buddhism and Taoism as well as others who believe in the presence of these ghosts will put out offerings of food and drink, as well as money. Prayers are also offered so the ghosts will not create mischief or havoc during the month. There are many superstitions that surround the ghost month including not getting married, starting a business or going on vacation. The most important day is the full moon day which is considered Ghost Festival Day falling on the 15 day of the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar. In Vietnam this also coincides with Vu Lan which is like a Mother's Day. People also go to the temple to prayer for the mothers but usually prayer for fathers as well as the rest of the family. If you spot someone wearing a red rose it means their mother or parents are still alive. If you see them wearing a white rose it means the mother or father is deceased. If you want to see any of these rituals when visiting Saigon the Ba Thien Hau Pagoda in District 5 is a good place to visit as well as other temples in this district. Hoi An, Hue, and Hanoi would also be great places to see the rituals surrounding this month or day when visiting Vietnam.

►Săn Bắt Bằng Ná và Nấu Rắn Mối!◄
Around my house I see a lot of lizards, which include geckos, skinks and I think it’s a water dragon. I was rather hungry today and I’ve always been curious to know how lizards taste. I decided to do some slingshot hunting for lizards and yes, I did eat them. To be 100% honest, they tasted great! I plan to do more catch and cook with lizards in the future! And don’t worry, it wasn’t a slingshot/catapult carnage.
