Beijing Beihai Park Tour
Beihai Park is a public park and former imperial garden located in the northwestern part of the Imperial City, Beijing. First built in the 11th century, it is among the largest of all Chinese gardens and contains numerous historically important structures, palaces, and temples. Since 1925, the place has been open to the public as a park. It is also connected at its northern end to the Shichahai.
The park has an area of more than 69 hectares (171 acres), with a lake that covers more than half of the entire park. At the center of the park is an island called Jade Flower Island (琼华岛; 瓊華島; Qiónghuádǎo), whose highest point is 32 meters (105 ft).
Beihai literally means Northern Sea. There are also corresponding Central (Zhonghai) and Southern (Nanhai) Seas. These latter two are joined inside a complex of buildings known after them as Zhongnanhai; it is the home of China's paramount leaders.
The Beihai Park, as with many of Chinese imperial gardens, was built to imitate renowned scenic spots and architecture from various regions of China; the Taihu lake, the elaborate pavilions and canals in Hangzhou and Yangzhou, the delicate garden structures in Suzhou and others all served as inspirations for the design of the numerous sites in this imperial garden. The structures and scenes in the Beihai Park are described as masterpieces of gardening technique that reflects the style and the superb architectural skill and richness of traditional Chinese garden art.
The White Pagoda (白塔, Bai Ta, White Tower) is a 40-meter (131 ft) high stupa placed on the highest point on Jade Flower Island, built to honour the visit of the 5th Dalai Lama in 1651. Its body is made of white stone. Sun, moon and flame engravings decorate the surface of the tower. Destroyed in 1679 by an earthquake, it was rebuilt the following year, and restored again in 1976 because of the Tangshan earthquake near Beijing. A reliquary, secreted inside the structure are Buddhist scriptures, monk's mantles and alms bowl, and the bones of monks (their remains after cremation).

Hutongs are reflections of the old Beijing. Narrow alley ways pulse with the rhythm of everyday life. Old walled courtyards fronted by massive red doors are a pleasure to wander through and get lost in . They are all being destroyed by the Chinese government, as are many of Chinas ancient history, and will soon be a thing of the past. There was still a nice selection of them on the north side of Houhai Lakes. The lakes themselves are a peaceful retreat in the middle of this hectic city. Willow tree branches sway in the wind and kiss the water, seniors exercise on machines, practice Thai Chi and fish while Chinese tourists stroll around the lake holding hands and taking pictures.
That night the rains came. Rain brings a different energy to a city. A peacefulness, a calm. Life continues as usual as the street vendors huddle under umbrellas and makeshift tarps shielding their produce, meats, electronics, and gadgets from the rising puddles waiting for the next customer to come, and they do. It was business as usual. Travel allows you to step into people’s lives for just a moment. It is a very voyeuristic way to spend your time. Still this was not the China we came to observe. In fact, it is not China at all that we are here to see. Tomorrow we will board another plane for a four-hour flight west to the autonomous region of Xinjiang.

What was once primarily a local problem is now becoming international because the dust storms which are occurring more frequently in the last few years and which are larger, are beginning to affect other countries.

Well the Chinese government is going to have to assume most of the responsibility because China has by far the biggest problem because it is by far the biggest country. And I think it's going to take even more resources than are being committed at present.

Population increase will certainly add pressure to the environment but population increase at this percentage doesn't necessarily lead to environmental deterioration, I don't think so. Only when people are able to make rational use of water resources, that is, to make people's behaviour more rational (towards the environment), the management of the Tarim river will definitely have a brighter future in the next six years.

Large parts of China are slowly being turned into desert, which could lead to catastrophic consequences for the one-billion strong population if the process is not halted in its tracks.
Despite hundreds of miles of wide flowing rivers and lush green fields, large parts of China are slowly being turned into a desert. Desertification is the country's biggest environmental problem. APTN went to Xinjiang in northwestern China, a region which suffers from severe sandstorms that cause extensive damage and can sometimes lead to the deaths of local people.
The loss of agricultural land is a long term concern for China which fears it may not be able to feed its population of more than one billion people. The arid desert conditions of northwest China can reach temperatures of around 50 degrees celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) at the height of summer.
Xinjiang comprises 16 per cent of the country's land surface and is home to a quarter of China's population. The province used to rely on the silk-trade, agriculture and livestock for income but now it is on the verge of exploiting huge natural gas reserves that will mean millions of dollars pouring into the local economy.
