cathedral in Helsinki, Finland, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary). Its name comes from the Old Church Slavonic word uspenie,
which denotes the Dormition. Designed by the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev (1808–1862). The cathedral was built after his death in 1862–1868.
The crypt chapel of the cathedral is named after the holy Alexander Hotovitzky, who served as vicar of the Orthodox parish of Helsinki 1914–1917.
The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. On the back of the cathedral, there is a plaque commemorating
Russian Emperor Alexander II, who was the sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Finland during the cathedral's construction. Main cathedral of the Finnish

Helsinki - Uspenski Kathedrale
Die Uspenski-Kathedrale (finn. Uspenskin katedraali, schwed. Uspenskijkatedralen) ist eine orthodoxe Kirche in der finnischen Hauptstadt Helsinki. Sie ist die Kathedrale der finnisch-orthodoxen Diözese Helsinki. Der Name der Kathedrale stammt aus dem Russischen und bedeutet Mariä-Entschlafens-Kathedrale.
Die Uspenski-Kathedrale befindet sich auf einem Felsen am westlichen Ende der Halbinsel Katajanokka im Zentrum von Helsinki. Zur Zeit ihrer Errichtung (1868 eingeweiht) war die weithin sichtbare Kirche ein deutliches Symbol der russischen Herrschaft über Finnland. Heute gehört sie zu den wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten der finnischen Hauptstadt.

Uspenskin katedraali eli Jumalansynnyttäjän kuolonuneen nukkumisen katedraali on Helsingin ortodoksisen seurakunnan sekä samalla Helsingin hiippakunnan pääkirkko eli katedraali. Punatiilinen kirkko sijaitsee Helsingin keskustassa Katajanokan kalliolla. Uspenskin katedraali on Pohjois- ja Länsi-Euroopan suurin ortodoksinen kirkko. Se on myös suosittu turistikohde, jossa käy vuosittain jopa puoli miljoonaa vierailijaa.
Kirkon nimi tulee slaavikielisestä sanasta uspenie, joka merkitsee poisnukkumista (kuolemista). Katedraali onkin pyhitetty Jumalansynnyttäjän kuolonuneen nukkumisen muistolle, jonka muistopäivää vietetään 15. elokuuta.

Many thousands of the bricks used for the construction of Uspensky were salvaged from another building: the dismantling of the Bomarsund Fortress provided the church with an economic building material. This is Greek-Orthodox Cathedral and the largest orthodox cathedral in Western Europe. Orthodox churches in Russia are of course larger.
Opening hours of the cathedral vary - I had tried to go there 3 times before this year but it seems to be nearly always closed. And this time it was opened 10 minutes later than announced. The cathderal is popular among tourist - but fact is that is is intended to be mainly a place for praying -not to be visited by tourist.
You can find a 2D video of the cathedral in my earlier videos. This video is 3D - and you need 3D glasses to see it correctly. Taking photos and video is allowed in the cathderal (no fflash however).

Uspenskin katedraali 150 vuotta
Uspenskin katedraalin rakentaminen vahvistettiin keisarillisella määräyksellä vuonna 1859. Rakentamispaikaksi valittiin korkea kallio Katajanokalta, aivan keisarillisen palatsin ja päävartion tuntumasta.
Maisemallisesti edustava paikka luonnollisesti heijasteli katedraalin merkitystä. Helsinkiin haluttiin luoda maineikkaiden arkkitehtien avulla pääkaupungin arvoista näyttävyyttä. Katedraali valmistui puolitoista vuosisataa sitten vuonna 1868, jolloin katedraalia reunustivat vielä pääosin puutalot.
Tänä päivänä Uspenskin katedraali on erottamaton osa Helsingin kaupunkikuvaa ja erottuu mereltä päin lähestyttäessä jo kaukaa kaupungin siluetissa. Katedraali on myös aktiivisen jumalanpalvelusyhteisön kotikirkko ja lukuisten matkailijoiden pyhiinvaelluskohde, jossa vierailee vuosittain arviolta puoli miljoonaa.

Russian orthodox church in Finland is planning to build an own church in eastern Helsinki by Itäkeskus shopping centre.
Upenski Cathedral was built 1862--1868 and opened in 1868. The cathedral is annually visited by a half million tourist. Admission is free of charge. In winter the cathedral might be closed on some days.
