All About Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia (The Complete Travel Guide)
Hi friends! I will explain in this video all About Salar de Uyuni. (The Complete Description & Touring Guide).
Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is considered one of the most extreme and remarkable vistas in all of South America, if not Earth. Stretching more than 4,050 square miles of the Altiplano, it is the world’s largest salt flat, left behind by prehistoric lakes evaporated long ago. Here, a thick crust of salt extends to the horizon, covered by quilted, polygonal patterns of salt rising from the ground.
At certain times of the year, nearby lakes overflow and a thin layer of water transforms the flats into a stunning reflection of the sky. This beautiful and otherworldly terrain serves as a lucrative extraction site for salt and lithium—the element responsible for powering laptops, smart phones, and electric cars. In addition to local workers who harvest these minerals, the landscape is home to the world's first salt hotel and populated by road-tripping tourists. The harsh beauty and desolateness of Salar de Uyuni can make for an incredible experience or a logistical nightmare. Here’s a guide to help.
HOW TO GET THERE.
Located at the crux of Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, the logistics and length of your trip to Salar de Uyuni will depend where you’re coming from. Tours originate from three main places.
From Uyuni, Bolivia.
The most popular jumping-off point for salt flats tours, Uyuni is a small, dusty town packed with tourism agencies in Plaza Arce, its main square. Travelers can book tours in advance online, through tour offices in La Paz, or they can simply arrive in Uyuni and peruse the options in town. Since Uyuni is so close to the salt flats, tourists can easily book day trips. Flights from La Paz to Uyuni can be booked through Amaszonas and BoA (one hour, about $130 round-trip). Overnight buses from La Paz are available with Trans Omar and Todo Turismo (10-12 hours, $30 to $40 each way).
From San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
Agencies drive travelers to the border before handing the tour over to a Bolivian operator. Due to the distance, this is a three-day tour.
From Tupiza, Bolivia.
This is the best starting point for travelers coming from Argentina. Tour operators recommend four-day tours from Tupiza, visiting Salar de Uyuni on the final day.
WHEN TO GO.
Salar de Uyuni has two distinct seasons. The rainy season (December to April) is when visitors come to witness the Salar’s breathtaking mirror effect. Be wary of excessive rain in December and January, as it can cause tour cancelations. During the dry season (May to November) temperatures are colder, the ground has hardened, and travelers can drive across the stark white landscape to places that aren’t accessible in the rainy season. Tour operators consider June through August their high period, and rates may rise accordingly.
CHOOSING A TOUR.
While the salt flats are one of Bolivia’s most popular attractions, it’s only a small part of the gorgeous Altiplano region. Many visitors indulge in a three-day tour (or longer) that includes the deserts, volcanos, geysers, hot springs, and high-altitude lakes to the south. Tours out of San Pedro de Atacama and Tupiza are already scheduled to drive through these sites.
Travelers can choose between a shared tour (cheaper and standardized) or private tour (higher-priced and custom-tailored). Shared tours generally provide Spanish-speaking guides who double as the driver and chef. These follow a rigid itinerary that will not likely accommodate individual requests and can hinder certain times of day, like sunrise or sunset. Private tours, by contrast, can be customized to a client’s liking, giving travelers more control over itinerary and the ability to go off the beaten path to volcanos or caves. Private tours also provide an English-speaking guide, chef, and a more comfortable vehicle.
Check online reviews and travel guides to carefully choose a reputable guide. Avoid companies that offer rock bottom prices—they may not provide an accredited guide or working car, which can endanger tourists. Also ask your agency whether they carry an emergency radio and first-aid kit.
HOW TO TAKE GREAT PHOTOS.
One of the highlights of Salar de Uyuni is an endless horizon that allows photographers to play with perspective and depth of field. Stage battle scenes with toy dinosaurs, cook your friends in pots and pans, or crawl out of seemingly giant jars of peanut butter. The key to great photos is to get the camera low to the ground and close to your prop. This gives the perspective that the prop is larger than the human subjects, who stand farther away. Don’t let your subjects venture too far, though—the larger the distance between the prop and the subjects, the harder it will be to keep everything in focus. If your camera permits, make the aperture as narrow as possible.
Thanks for watching.

3D/2N tour in Salar the Uyuni - Exploring the Bolivian Salt Flats
Travel video blog about The Bolivian Salt Flats.
Our 3 days / 2 nights trips to the Bolivian Salt Flats (Uyuni) started on 29 December 2015 from the Atacama Desert in Chile and ended on 31 December also in the Atacama.
We booked our private trip to the Bolivian Salt Flats on the night before in San Pedro do Atacama with Estrella Der Sur, but they did not have an English speaking guide available for us, so we ended up taking the tour with a Bolivian driver only. Luckily I am from originally from Brazil so I could understand a bit of Spanish and I could communicate a bit with him with my Portuguese.
Day 01 - 29 December 2017
We woke up at 6 am that day for our morning pick up at 7 am. A small shared van drove us to the Chilean and Bolivian Border, from where we met our Bolivian driver and started our private tour across Bolivia. We then had a long day ahead of us driving along the desert across many places such as Laguna Verde, Laguna Branca, Licancabur Volcano, Dali Desert, Termas de Polques (Thermal pools), Geysers Sol de Manana, Laguna Colorada & Volcan Tomasil.
We found the landscapes in these places to be very beautiful and there were many spots to see Llamas and pink flamingos along the way. Perhaps the best thing about doing a private tour is that most of the time we had the scenery for ourselves. A lot of tour companies operate these tours in Bolivia, but because we were doing a private tour we had the flexibility to start the tour when we wanted, so we barely encountered other cars on our journey.
It’s important to mention though that we found this tour to be very tiring as well, especially considering that we were at high altitude, sometimes at even over 4000 meters above sea level. It’s basically a full day driving in the desert without air conditioning (none of the tours companies have AC in their cars), so it’s not uncommon to feel tired, and some people can even develop altitude sickness symptoms like fatigue, headaches and others.
We spent the evening of 29 December in a salt hotel situated at 3900 meters above sea level (Hotel Tambo Loma). Although paying for the premium tour with private guide and premium hotels, what we got was more like a basic 1 or 2 star hotel. If you are travelling in Bolivia, you should bear in mind that the accommodation in those areas is very basic. Our hotel was ok, but even the hot shower would not work in our bathroom, so be prepared.
Day 02 - 30 December 2017
This day started a bit frantic, I had been sick all night with food poisoning / altitude sickness, so the first place we stopped was a small clinic in the village nearby our salt hotel so that I could be medicated before proceeding with the tour. That means that our tour that day did not start until 11am.
The first place we visited on the tour was the Villa Incahuasi, which is a rocky island situated in the middle of Salar de Uyuni. The views from the top of the island are amazing, but you have to be up for a walk to see it properly. Unfortunately I still hadn’t recovered completely so I only went for a short walk to explore it, but it was completely worth it.
After that, we had lunch in restaurant nearby the island and then finally headed to the most popular attraction in Bolivia: The Salar de Uyuni, which is the world’s largest salt flat located in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes and at an elevation of 3656 meters above sea level. That’s where people take their creative “infinity pictures” in the salt flats. After the spending some time there, we headed to our next hotel for the night, this time in Uyuni: The Tambo Aymara. Surprisingly, for a 3 star hotel in Bolivia we found this place to be very good and comfortable.
Day 03 - 31 December 2016
We left our hotel at around 8 am that morning for our journey back to San Pedro do Atacama, stopping in Vale de Las Damas and some other places along the way. After lunch, we were dropped off at the Bolivian / Chilean border again, from where we would clear customs and make our way back to the Atacama Desert.
Travel Tips: If you are planning a trip to the Bolivian Salt Flats, the easiest way to get there is from the Atacama Desert. You could potentially fly to Uyuni from La Paz or you could fly directly to La Paz and catch a train to Uyuni, but I don’t recommend these options because of the high altitude. The easiest way to prevent or reduce symptoms of altitude sickness is by going up slowly, and the Atacama Desert in Chile is situated a lower altitude than Uyuni and La Paz (2407 meters above sea level in the Atacama as opposed to 3656 meters in Uyuni and 4000 meters in La Paz). That means that your chances of developing altitude sickness will be lower if you travel from there. Consider spending at least 3 nights in the Atacama to adjust your body to the altitude before moving up to Bolivia.

Why this is NOT for everyone! Uyuni Salt Flats Travel Vlog
Visiting the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia was a dream of mine and this travel vlog covers what it was really like - from the incredible mirror effect to breaking down in the desert. I got to witness first hand that this adventure is not for everyone!
In retrospect, I want to add that I believe the ''gentleman'' was exhausted from being in the jeep and sleeping in the very basic accommodations and just snapped at the driver, taking it out on him. This is an adventure trip, and if you want to check this off your bucket list, make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. Because despite all of this, it was still one of the most incredible journeys I've been on and loved it! I would highly recommend it to my fellow adventurous adults :)

Uyuni Salt Flats 3 Days/2 Nights Tour, Salar de Uyuni
Salar de Uyuni, 2017 Oct.
We took a bus from La Paz to Uyuni. Arrived very early in the morning, but local businesses were already open for tourists.
We've shopped around and chosen Empexsa Expediciones company. We've been very lucky to get Alejandro as a driver. He's been extremely friendly and helpful. Even though the tour was in Spanish, we still could understand some of the stories he was telling about the Salt Flats as he spoke slow and was very articulate.
P.S. Alejandro has tamed a wild culpeo (Andean) fox that you can see in the video and knows a lot about Quinoa ????
We also got to see Viscachas or Vizcachas some sort of rabbit look like cuties. What's more, we've seen a lot of flamingos in Laguna Colorada and Laguna Hedionda where views were amazing but the smell was very peculiar due to sulfur content. Moreover, we sighted wild llamas and alpacas wandering around deserts and lakeshores.
In those 3 days we've been swept away by mesmerizing views and experiences. Would love to do it again in the rainy season to see salt flats mirror effect.
At the end of the tour, Alejandro drove us to the Bolivia - Chile border marked by a flag and some small shed standing where all of us had to go inside one by one and pay some bribe money to some fat ass custom officer to get a Bolivia exit stamp.
Then in the freezing windy weather, we've waited for a bus to take us to San Pedro de Atacama. Wasn't a pleasant experience but we survived.

Reflections from Uyuni (4k version)
Share
Reflections from Uyuni is a Time-lapse short film that shows the intrinsic beauty of the salt flat of Uyuni and the province of Potosí in Bolivia.
The reflections produced by the water flooding the area in the rainy season, are the main protagonist of Enrique Pacheco´s camera, who invites us to dream with impossible images from another world, where the sky meets the earth forming an infinite mirage.
The salt flat of Uyuni with over 10,000km2 is the largest in the world. It is located in the province of Potosi, Bolivia, near the Andes, at an altitude of 3.656m.
The Salar serves as a transport route through the Altiplano of Bolivia, but tourism has an increasingly more important role in the area.

PERU & BOLIVIA | Salt Flats, Machu Picchu + Cliffside Hotels
We went to Peru and Bolivia. We were mesmerized by Machu Picchu, traversed the Uyuni Salt Flats, climbed a Sacred Valley mountain to slumber in a transparent, cliffside hotel suite, moonwalked in the Valley of the Moon, floated on man-made Uros islands, and braved the mines of Potosi. Peru and Bolivia are Latin neighbors that share culture, adventure and infinite beauty.

Tears of the Mountain
In a time when gods left footprints as wide as lakes and their heads towered over clouds, there was once a mountain goddess called Tunupa. Legend has it her husband abandoned her for another woman. Heartbroken and distraught, Tunupa cried while breastfeeding her child. The water from her tears and the milk from her breasts mingled to form the largest salt flat in the world—the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia.
Tunupa has since been immortalised as a mountain, which bears her name, by the Aymara people of the Andes. In Aymara belief, specific geological formations are considered sacrosanct, as gods can choose to take the shape of caves, hillsides or rivers.
Nico, this film’s protagonist, has lived and worked in the shadow of Mount Anupa all his life. The frosted expanse which surrounds the mountain is almost as large as the state of Connecticut, and is where Nico voyages to work every day. As he hacks away at the salt rock with a well-worn ax to source material for his sculptures, he steadily chews coca leaves—his labor becoming a form of self-induced meditation. “The salt flat is a nurturing entity to Nico. It is as if it connects him to a higher dimension,” says director Ivan Olita. “It provides for him and his family, so it has to be treated according to the teachings of his elders.”
Nico maintains some reverence for the Salar by using traditional and more time-consuming hand tools over mechanized instruments to extract the rock. “Myths are a potent way to investigate our reality from a different perspective,” says Olita. “They inform the life of the people from the area they belong to and can help us connect with it more profoundly.”
The wonder of Bolivia’s bleached sea, which continues to draw the awe and respect of local residents, also precipitates its own desecration. Salar de Uyuni is one of the flattest places on Earth and holds up to 70% of the world’s lithium reserves, making it a hotspot for tourists and a mining magnet for tech companies.
“The Aymara myth intertwining with contemporary myths of technology exemplifies the co-dependence between man and nature,” Olita comments. “But most of all it is an attempt to identify the connection that exists between places that live in the collective consciousness and the people that actually inhabit them.”

Protests at Copacabana, Bolivia Border Closed | Bus Ride from Cusco, Peru to La Paz, Bolivia
Hi Guys,
In this video we take a bus from Cusco, Peru to Puno, Peru to the Bolivia border. Unfortunately over the past few month's the Copacabana Border has been having protests and on several occasions they have closed the border. There have been many protests in Peru and Bolivia and many roads, businesses have been closed. It's not a very good time to visit South America as from our experience we have run into protests in every country we have visited so far.
After doing research we quickly learned this has been an ongoing problem and isn't likely going away anytime soon. Luckily for us, the protest's we have witnessed haven't been violent; However they have caused massive disruptions in our travel plans and have cost us thousands of dollars in rescheduling hotels and flights that we're non-refundable.
The bus rude from Cusco to Puno took about 8-9 hours and was an. overnight bus. We didn't get much sleep, the seats only recline slightly and the road was extremely bumpy. We arrived in Puno at around 5AM and waited in the hotel loby for hours until a room became ready. We stayed overnight in Puno, Peru for one night. During the day in Puno we visited the floating islands on Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia in the Andes Mountains, is one of South America's largest lakes and the world’s highest navigable body of water. Said to be the birthplace of the Incas, it’s home to numerous ruins. Its waters are famously still and brightly reflective. Around it is Titicaca National Reserve, sheltering rare aquatic wildlife such as giant frogs.
The next day we boarded the Bolivia Hop bus and began our trip to Copacabana. When we we're 10 minutes from the border, they had announced that the border was closed. We only had one option, to drive backwards for a couple hours and try to enter Bolivia from another border. Everyone's hotel in Copacabana was already booked and we all lost lot's of money from this. When we arrived at the alternative border, we had many problems. A stop at the border should have take 1 hour, turned into a 6 hour ordeal and there we're no good restaurants or anything it was just a small town with a few convenient stores and dirt roads with garbage everywhere.

OTB'S Save the Deena Tour: The Story of South America by School Bus, S1E16
Like the prodigal son, the bus and the gang return for the long awaited 16th chapter of the Save the Deena Tour - The Story of South America by School Bus.
After a long journey into La Paz, Bolivia, we are immediately greeted by their infamous traffic plagued with micro buses a sort of shared taxi van, and felt out of place with a giant Thomas School Bus.
It was actually the local government's unique solution to the traffic problem that brought us here in the first place.
After dropping the bus off for repairs, the gang departs in a search of the righteous traffic zebras of La Paz; a government sponsored program designed at keeping at-risk youth off the streets, while simultaneously providing a friendly solution to the traffic issue.
Volunteers embark on a grueling training session before they are finally allowed to don the 'Zebra Skin' and wander precariously into traffic, in an well meaning, but perhaps slightly mis-guided, attempt to direct it.
In comparison to street lights or roundabouts, this solution seemed impossibly ridiculous, and so of course we had to participate. Brandon and Max volunteered in the program, and underwent the training that allowed them to wear the uniform, and it's off into traffic we go.
It is important to note that neither Brandon nor Max were under the influence of a psychedelic made famous in the 60's and 70's.
After an inside glance at daily life we embark on the 750+km journey to Uyuni - home to the famous and beautiful salt flats, a tired primordial sea with the coldest temperature of the trip.
The next day we explore the train cemetery, and make our way to the Uyuni Salt Flats. Upon arrival, in classic OTB fashion, there's another roadblock to endure... But what will it be??

So what is the Save the Deena Tour?
Humanity is filled with countless untold stories of successes and failures, history and growth, spirit and realism. And yet, that’s how it remains. Untold stories. And If you’ve ever traveled you come to realize that, the more you travel, the less you know. And that's how we discovered that Human Experiences are better lived than learned.
What does that mean? We believe that the lens of a story is best told by experiencing it yourself.
As such, we ditched the 9-5 lifestyle to drive a bus through South America to experience the trials and triumphs of the people themselves, and to share the unique stories we came across with the rest of the world.
We spent 7 months in South America hunting down stories that highlight the exceptional efforts of humans and in the process, w came to understand and grow within our own human experience.
