Sceiligs View Bray Head Loop Walk, Valentia Island, County Kerry 03082013
This is a moderate 2-3 hour (7 km) loop walking route to Bray Head and along the coastline at the west end of Valentia Island, Co. Kerry in the south west of Ireland. It is a steady climb to the tower with spectacular views along the cliff walk.
Bray Head is located on the western end of Valentia Island, County Kerry. At its summit is Bray Tower, a two-storey abandoned signal tower built by English forces in 1815 during the Napoleonic wars and used as a signal station along with several other Martello towers located all along the Ireland coast. It was designed like a 16th century Irish tower house with a chimney and is surrounded by a stone wall. In 1907 Bray Tower was used by the Navy as signal station and again during WWII it was used for coastal watches. The 90 minute walk to the tower from a new car park is scenic, historical and archaeological walk and well worth the €2 car park charge where you can soak in the views and have a picnic.
From the tower there are great views out west over the Skellig Islands, north looking out over the sheer cliffs to Dingle and south along the Skellig Coast, Portmagee and Puffin Island. If you're lucky you may also be able to see some whales passing the headland in the water below. Just below and west of the tower are the remains of the word EIRE written using stones in large letters to allow pilots during war times to identify the Irish coastline.
Near the car park, is the historic site where the first Trans-Atlantic Cable landed in 1866 which connected North America to the rest of the world. At this time Valentia Island was the centre of the world for communications.
Half the way up to the tower on the south side of the road is a unique heritage site that many miss. Here there are remains of five dry stone buildings from early Christian times with 12 decorated stones, crosses and other geometric shapes engraved on them
Kerry Gathering TV, Heritage Special, Cromwell Lighthouse and The Rocket Car, Valentia.
The lighthouse and the rocket car are trademarks of Valentias heritage, the latter was recently refurbished and now takes pride of place in Valentia Harbour, its most lauded rescue was the big cat rescue where it was utilized to pull no less then 11 men to safety from the sea, Both reflect Valentias past and the lighthouse, though now automated is still in use.

Valentia to Valencia for Down Syndrome Ireland ( V2V4DSI )
Since 2007, Pole Position Travel.com has been hosting an auction of motorcycling memorabilia in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland at the Valencia round of Moto GP, raising thousands of Euro in the process. As my daughter Robyn was born in 2005 with the condition, I have attended every year to lend my support. Last year, whilst having a beer at the auction, and with a microphone in my hand (never a good mix), I foolishly suggested I might ride down to the event in 2012. Waking up the next morning with a slightly less than perfect demeanour, it begun to dawn on me that maybe looking at a map or something might have been a good idea before I decided to volunteer myself for the challenge as for a start ferry times are much different in winter time not to mention that it gets dark rather early in the latter months of the year!...............
The full blog post can be viewed here
......................I must also thank the V2V4DSI crew who took part: (in no particular order) Paul 'Frank the tank' Tobin, Eoin 'Free wi-fi' Gorman, Tony 'Sminky' O'Connell, Stuie 'Disco' Carrick, Alan 'I don't do mornings' McCaffrey, Conor 'Cheese' O'Leary, AJ 'The Hutch' Hutchinson, Mark 'Yuuup' Nugent', Guy 'Token Brit' Robbins and Tadhg 'Mono wheel' Barry, a better bunch of lunatics one could not hope to meet, I have never laughed so much in my life as I did over the course of our wee adventure!
We have plans to do a similar challenge in 2013 although first we have the small matter of in May, but foreign shores are beckoning once more so watch this space.

The Daniel O'Connell Church of the Holy Cross in the town is the only one in Ireland named after a lay person. It is situated on the slopes of Beentee from which I recorded this footage. You can also see the decommissioned Royal Irish Constabulary barracks (white building), now a heritage centre, which according to legend, was built from the plans for a British barracks in India that got mixed up (a very common myth that occurs in many Irish garrison towns). The Cahersiveen railway station was on the Great Southern and Western Railway which ran from Farranfore to Valentia Harbour in the Republic of Ireland (left bridge).
Cnoc na dTobar or Knocknadobar (right mountain in background) was a sacred pilgrim site in prehistoric and medieval times. The Pilgrim Path from the traditional start point near St Furze’s holy well is marked by 14 Stations of the Cross leading to an imposing Celtic Cross on the summit plateau that acts as the pilgrim destination.

Ring of Kerry, Ireland - 04/06/2016
The Ring of Kerry (Irish: Mórchuaird Chiarraí) is a 179-km-long circular tourist route in County Kerry, south-western Ireland. Clockwise from Killarney it follows the N71 to Kenmare, then the N70 around the Iveragh Peninsula to Killorglin – passing through Sneem, Waterville, Cahersiveen, and Glenbeigh – before returning to Killarney via the N72.
Popular points include Muckross House (near Killarney), Staigue stone fort and Derrynane House, home of Daniel O'Connell. Just south of Killarney, Ross Castle, Lough Leane, and Ladies View (a panoramic viewpoint), all located within Killarney National Park, are major attractions located along the Ring. A more complete list of major attractions along the Ring of Kerry includes: Gap of Dunloe, Bog Village, Kerry Woollen Mills, Rossbeigh Beach, Cahersiveen Heritage Centre, Derrynane House, Skellig Experience, Staigue Fort, Kenmare Lace, Moll's Gap, Ladies View, Torc Waterfall, Muckross House, The Blue Pool, Ross Castle, Ogham Stones, St Mary’s Cathedral, Muckross Abbey, Franciscan Friary, Kellegy Church, O’Connell Memorial Church, Sneem Church and Cemetery, Skellig Michael, Beehive Cells and the Stone Pillars marking an important grave.
There is also an established walking path named The Kerry Way, which takes its own route, and a signposted Ring of Kerry cycling path which uses older quieter roads where possible. The Kerry Way roughly follows the scenic driving route of the Ring of Kerry.
There are numerous variations to the route taking in St. Finian's Bay and Valentia Island which the official driving ring misses (the official cycling route takes in Valentia Island). As well as some fine beaches, it also offers the Gap of Dunloe, Bog Village, Derrynane House, the Skellig Experience Valentia Island, Molls Gap, Torc Waterfall, Muckross House and Ross Castle.
The Ring is a popular day trip and numerous bus companies offer circuits during the summer months. As the narrow roads make it difficult for tour coaches to pass, all tour buses run in an anti-clockwise (or counter-clockwise) direction, traveling via Killorglin first. Some recommend that car owners travel in the opposite direction, going first to Kenmare to avoid delays caused by tour buses. Others advise traveling counter-clockwise to avoid having to pass the buses. In 2008 satellite navigation systems were blamed for directing bus drivers in a clockwise direction around the route.
