Nijmegen Valkhofpark: Operation Market Garden
Nijmegen Valkhofpark: Operation Market Garden 20-09-2014.
Operation Market Garden (17–25 September 1944) was an unsuccessful Allied military operation planned, and predominantly led, by the British. It was fought in the Netherlands and Germany in World War II. The success of the operation depended on taking a series of nine bridges, the last being at the city of Arnhem over the Rhine river. Airborne and land forces succeeded in the liberation of the Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Nijmegen, but failed in keeping their farthest positions in and around the city of Arnhem including the bridge over the Rhine.
The operation included two sub-operations: an airborne assault to seize key bridges (Market) and a ground attack (Garden). The attack was the largest airborne operation up to that point in World War II.
Field Marshal Montgomery's strategic goal was to encircle the heart of German industry, the Ruhr, in a pincer movement. The northern end of the pincer would circumvent the northern end of the Siegfried Line, giving easier access into Germany. The aim of Operation Market Garden was to establish the northern end of a pincer ready to project deeper into Germany. Allied forces would project north from Belgium, 60 miles (97 km) through the Netherlands, across the Rhine and consolidate north of Arnhem on the Dutch/German border, ready to close the pincer.
The operation made massed use of airborne forces, whose tactical objectives were to secure the bridges and allow a rapid advance by armored ground units to consolidate north of Arnhem. The operation required the seizure of the bridges across the Maas, two arms of the Rhine (the Waal and the Lower Rhine), together with crossings over several smaller canals and tributaries.
The Allies captured several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen at the beginning of the operation. Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks' XXX Corps ground force advance was delayed by the initial failure of the airborne units to secure bridges at Son and Nijmegen. German forces demolished the bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal at Son before it could be secured by the 101st Airborne Division. The 82nd Airborne Division's failure to capture the main road bridge over the river Waal at Nijmegen before 20 September also delayed the advance of XXX Corps.
At the furthest point of the airborne operation at Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division encountered initial strong resistance. The delays in capturing the bridges at Son and Nijmegen gave time for German forces—including the 9th and 10th SS panzer divisions, who were present at that time—to organize and counterattack.
In the ensuing battle, only a small force managed to capture the north end of the Arnhem road bridge and after the ground forces failed to relieve them, the paratroopers were overrun on 21 September. The remainder of the 1st Airborne Division was trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, having to be evacuated on the 25th of September, after sustaining heavy casualties.
The Allies had failed to cross the Rhine. The river remained a barrier to their advance into Germany until offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. The failure of Market Garden to form a foothold over the Rhine ended Allied expectations of finishing the war by Christmas 1944.

'Meer waarde dan een Rembrandt', grootste kunstschat van Gelderland in Valkhof
NIJMEGEN - Vanaf dit weekend is een van de grootste kunstschatten van Gelderland te zien in Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen. Het gebedenboek van Maria van Gelre wordt er tentoongesteld. Het boek heeft ongeveer dezelfde kunsthistorische waarde als de Nachtwacht van Rembrandt.
Het Valkhof Barbarossa's castle Nijmegen
The Valkhof hill on the River Waal (Rijn) is one of the most strategic positions in the Netherlands and was already used by the Germanic tribes and later the Romans as a fortification. In the 8th century Emperor Charlemagne maintained his palatium here on at least four occasions. It remained in used by the Holy Roman Emperors until it was burned down by Godfrey with the Beard in 1047. The castle was rebuilt by Frederic Barbarossa between 1152 1nd 1154. Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI was born here in 1165.
The site features the St Nicolas chapel based on the church built by Charlemagne in Aachen. It dates from around 1000 there is also a small remainder of the court chapel which was part of the imperial castle. Because of lack of money the castle was demolished in 1798.

Seven days of exciting new music in the beautiful Valkhofpark, Nijmegen, the Netherlands 16-22 July 2016
Outdoor public piano in the park (Openluchtpiano in Valkhofpark, Nijmegen)
Someone playing one of our street pianos in the park. Artist who designed and painted the piano art: Esmeralda Snaphaan.
Just a few days left to play the four outdoor pianos around the city center of Nijmegen, until June 22nd! When I was on my way to close them up for the night one week ago, someone was still playing :).
If you like our pianos, please spread the message and consider supporting my project as a volunteer, with a donation to NL30 TRIO 0254 8156 85 or by simply sharing this video :). Donations will cover costs like tuning this piano, which happened yesterday and was necessary, as you can probably hear in this video ;).
It would be great to have a few volunteers for every piano, to take shifts in locking and opening them every day, and taking care of the pianos on rainy days (covering and uncovering them). This is a 3D Stereoscopic 360 degree VR Virtual Reality sample. Filmed in the city park Valkhof next to our office in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
We are now doing VR filming in full 360 degrees, and real depth 3D (stereoscopic) with high resolution up to 8K x 8K (in 3D a little less). It looks amazingly good even on Oculus GO. We can also program the Oculus GO in a way that user cannot enter the normal Oculus Go Home user interface, but automatically locks into our own VR video gallery/player or whatever is needed.

NIJMEGEN - Ooit onderdeel van de stadsmuur. Een oude verdedigingstoren aan de Waalkade in Nijmegen. De toren is verwerkt in een nieuw museum dat er omheen is gebouwd: De Bastei. Komend weekeinde gaat het open: na jaren vertraging en kosten die met miljoenen opliepen.

Market Garden in 360° bij Nijmegen | Achter de Dijken
In 360° neemt Leo Blokhuis je mee naar het Valkhofpark, een plek die we vaak vergeten als het om de bevrijding van Nijmegen en Market Garden gaat. Op deze plek is in september 1944 hevig gevochten om de Waalbrug door het Britse leger. Vergeet niet om rond te bewegen met je telefoon, vinger of muis!
In Achter de Dijken ontrafelt Leo Blokhuis onze vrijheidsgeschiedenis. De drang naar vrijheid en autonomie loopt als een rode draad door onze geschiedenis. Van het prille begin met Bataven, Friezen en Romeinen tot de hevig bevochten vrede van 1945. Hét verhaal van het vrijgevochten Nederlandse volk bestaat niet. Elke eeuw kent haar eigen mythes met haar eigen helden, haar eigen vrijheidsstrijders (en haar eigen waarheid).
