2018,0812 - Valles Caldera - Longmire Location - Northern NM
Some folks back east don't get it, so here is an example of why New Mexicans love their state. This spectacular expanse is a caldera; the result of a volcano that collapses onto itself. It is also the filming location for the gripping western TV drama Longmire. Correct, the show was set in Wyoming but was actually filmed in New Mexico.
Majestic Vistas of the Valles Caldera in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico
Majestic views from the Valles Caldera -- the scenic crown jewel of New Mexico -- set to some glorious musical masterpieces. Please note that the photos in this video were taken from 2001-2009, and thus depict the caldera before the destruction of the Las Conchas Fire of 2011, the Thompson Ridge Fire of 2013, and the Cajete Fire of 2016, among others. The Jemez Mountains are still breathtaking, but the landscape looks different now. Therefore, this video should be considered to be an historical document showing the way the Jemez Mountains used to look -- a document of heartfelt love for the sacred Jemez.
The Valles Caldera is a 12-mile-wide collapsed volcanic crater with with lush and expansive high-altitude grassland valleys; towering mountain domes; verdant forests and woodlands; clear, sparkling streams; waterfalls; rivers carved through narrow, tall canyons; natural hot springs; red rock valleys; and some of the most stunning and isolated scenic beauty and wildlife in the Southwest. This crater, or caldera, was formed when the earth collapsed after a catastrophic volcanic eruption took place in the Jemez 1.2 million years ago.
About 80% of these photos are from behind the gates of the Valles Caldera National Preserve (and all are within the rim of the volcanic Valles Caldera).
Featuring the following music: Jupiter from The Planets Suite by Holst; Piano Concerto No. 5, Mvt. II, by Beethoven; 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky; The Tempest by Tchaikovsky; Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni.
Jemez Mountain Trail #5 - Valles Caldera, Part 2
The Valles Caldera National Preserve was a private ranch until 2000, when Congress created it from a well-known ranch known as the Baca Ranch in New Mexico's volcanic Jemez Mountain Range. This 89,000 acre property is situated inside a collapsed crater. Studded with eruptive domes and featuring Redondo Peak (11,254 feet), this old ranch property is now being developed to explore a new way of managing public lands.
History ... Until recently, the Valles Caldera was part of the Baca Ranch. The Dunigan family sold the entire surface estate of 95,000 acres (380 km2) and seven-eighths of the geothermal mineral estate to the federal government.
Valles Caldera National Preserve ... On July 25, 2000, the Valles Caldera Preservation Act created the Valles Caldera National Preserve, Santa Fe National Forest. The careful husbandry of the Baca Ranch by its private owners, including selective logging, limited grazing and hunting, and the use of prescribed fire, had preserved a mix of healthy range and timber land with significant biodiversity, including New Mexico's largest herd of elk, and served as a model for self-sustaining land development and use. Funds for the purchase came from the Land and Water Conservation Fund derived from royalties the US government receives from offshore petroleum and natural gas drilling. Under the terms of the Act, the Preserve will have to produce sustaining income; environmentalists had lobbied for the more inclusive protections of National Park status instead. The preserve is located in northeastern Sandoval County and southern Rio Arriba County, just west of Los Alamos. It has a land area of 89,716 acres (140.18 sq mi, or 363.07 km2). It is administered from the offices of the Valles Caldera Trust in Jemez Springs.

RV CamperVan Trip Jemez Mountains Santa Fe National Forest New Mexico & IM IN A VOLCANO!
This video is a quick trip to Jemez Mountains in the Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico. We stopped at the Valles Caldera (or Jemez Caldera) is a 13.7-mile (22.0 km) wide volcanic caldera in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico.[1] Hot springs, streams, fumaroles, natural gas seeps and volcanic domes dot the caldera floor landscape.[2] The highest point in the caldera is Redondo Peak, an 11,253-foot (3,430 m) resurgent lava dome located entirely within the caldera. Also within the caldera are several grass valleys the largest of which is Valle Grande. The only one accessible by a paved road. Much of the caldera is within the Valles Caldera National Preserve, a unit of the National Park System. Also stopped at Soda Dam, Shipwreck and several other awesome spots.

Hiking to the Longmire Cabin at Valles Caldera
The title should probably be Strolling to the Longmire Cabin at the Valles Caldera. We took a long time to get where we were going and then back to the ranger station. I don't think it takes the average person that long to hike this 2 mile, mostly flat ground walk. It took us a while since I had to stop every little while to take a picture. We did have a great time exploring the area though. We have lived in the area for 25 years and have never been to the Valles Caldera before. We will return! When traveling with your pets, please note, no dogs are allowed outside of your vehicle and dogs can not be left unattended. Not that you would want to leave a dog in your car.
The Valles Caldera was formed about 1.25 million years ago. It is still considered to be an active volcano. There are several hot springs in the area to show that there is something brewing underground.
You will find the Valles Caldera on highway 4 between Jemez Springs and Los Alamos, New Mexico. It is also really close to Bandelier National Monument which is another great place to visit.
Back country driving is limited in the Valles Caldera. If you plan on taking a back country road trip in the Valles Caldera you will need to come during summer months and even then only 35 vehicles are allowed per day.
There are so many things to do in this area, you could easily plan on spending a few days at the very least. There is camping available at several state and national parks in the area as well as lodging in Jemez Springs, New Mexico and Los Alamos. If you are hungry there are a couple of great places to eat in Jemez Springs. You can check out my videos of the Stage Stop Cafe, the Gilman Tunnels, Battleship Rock and coming soon Bandelier National Monument on my YouTube Channel. Please be sure to subscribe to my channel to catch even more videos of things to do in the area and elsewhere. Thank you for watching, I appreciate your views.
