Vance Monument Rededication
The Vance Monument, a memorial to Zebulon Vance, governor of North Carolina during the Civil War, was rededicated June 6 after months of renovation. The ceremony utilized many elements of the original dedication ceremony in 1897, including Masonic dedication rites, songs, a poem, and a message from the widow of Sen. Vance.
The 2015 ceremony included the Masonic rites led by N.C. Grandmaster Douglas Caudle; an impassioned speech by the Chairman of the Buncombe County Commissioners, David Gantt, on why we should still honor a Confederate; lovely renditions of ‘America’ and ‘The Old North State’ (North Carolina state song) by the North Buncombe High School chamber Choir; and some great anecdotes about Zeb Vance from Chris Roberts, of the 26th North Carolina Regiment. There were also some of the artifacts from the time capsule that had been placed in the monument in 1897, displayed by archivist Heather South.
Vance Monument Time Capsule Uncovered
ASHEVILLE, N.C. A piece of history was uncovered Tuesday, in Downtown Asheville. Crews with the City of Asheville removed a time capsule from the historic Vance Monument in Pack Square.
It's a mystery almost 120 years in the making. The time capsule was placed inside a Masonic cornerstone at the base of the obelisk, when it was built in 1897.
I've been here before, to Asheville, and I've seen the monument but I never realized there was something buried under it. So that makes it extra exciting, says JoAnn Rawley of Pennsylvania.
Only a gate separating onlookers from history, they kept an eye on the meticulous effort of crews as they removed the Asheville artifact.
People are taking such good care to do everything perfect, and I love that too, that people care about it, adds Rawley.
It's my little chore, to bring the North Carolina Archivist out to secure the box, says Brenda Mills with the City of Asheville. That proved easier said than done. Removing the capsule took crews more than an hour because the monument had shifted on its foundation.
Over time, just like a foundation of a house, the monument has shifted and the box is being crushed. So we can't pull the box out in tact, so we're having to pull it out in pieces, says Heather South, Archivist with the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.
A sheet was used to shield the eyes of onlookers, adding to the element of surprise. South unveiled one piece to onlookers Tuesday - a portion of what's believed to be a leather spine of a Bible.
An article published December 23, 1897 in the Asheville Daily Citizen lists items that may lie inside the copper box time capsule. They include:
-Bible
-Program of the 12/22/96.97 Dedication Ceremony
-Vance Monument History
-List of City Officers
-Year Book of the City of Asheville
-Code of the City of Asheville
-Roll of Honor for November in City Schools
-Silver Coins
-Asheville Daily Citizen 12/21
- Asheville Daily Gazette 12/22
- Asheville Register 12/17
- Asheville News and Hotel Reporter
-Epworth News
- Asheville College Monthly
- Colored Enterprise
-Muster Roll of Zebulon Vance's Company, The Rough and Ready Guard
-Membership of the Zebulon Vance Camp, U.S. Confederate Veterans
- Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina
- Proceedings of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons
- Proceedings of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar
- List of Officers of the Alpha Lodge Perfection, Scottish Rite
South says only time will tell if those items are what lie inside. My guess is there's going to be a lot of conservation work that needs to happen. But we'll just see what we can salvage, says South.
The contents of the capsule will go to the Western Regional Archives of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, where they will be cataloged.
Restoration of the Vance Monument is set to begin Monday, April 6. The 26th North Carolina Regiment along with the City of Asheville, have teamed up to make the restoration possible.
You'll have to wait until May 16 to hopefully see the artifacts salvaged from the time capsule. Details are expected to be revealed at a re-dedication ceremony for the monument, planned for 11 a.m. on May 16.

Haunted History of ~Woodfin~ Asheville ~Buncombe County~ North Carolina
Three miles north of Asheville is Woodfin, Asheville's neighbor to the north, here you will find the Church of the Redeemer,it is a historic Episcopal church located in Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina. It was built in 1886-1888, and is a native stone cruciform chapel in the Romanesque style. It measures 50 feet long and has a steeply pitched slate gable roof. It features stained glass in round-arch windows—including a Tiffany window signed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Also on the property is a contributing cemetery. It was built by Dr. Francis Willis, a British physician, who built the private chapel on his 100-acre estate.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985
Church of the Redeemer, built in 1886-1888 with two Tiffany windows, was originally the family chapel for a nearby mansion. The mansion has since burned down. According to witnesses, a female apparition has been spotted coming down the stairs of the sloped cemetery in black. She then crosses Riverside Drive and vanishes into the river. Some believe that this woman drowned in the river many years ago, and might be related to the family who lived in the mansion,or could it be one of its potential victims when the mansion burnt down seeking water to extinguish the flames.
There is the story of the woman in white, who occasionally appears on the steps of the Church of the Redeemer near the prison, then making her way to the nearby waters of the French Broad River before moving on to the prison, not a quarter of a mile away...read all
There are also reports of restless ghosts of the creepy, abandoned Craggy Prison
VIDEO HERE
The Old Craggy Prison was dedicated in May 1924 by the Buncombe County Commissioners, Craggy was one of 51 county prisons that the state assumed responsibility for with the passage of the Conner Bill in 1931. It was one of 61 prisons renovated or built during the late 1930s to house inmates who worked building roads.
In 1987, the General Assembly provided $8.4 million for replacement of the old prison with a new 312-bed facility as part of a $28.5 million Emergency Prison Facilities Development program. The new prison, located about three miles from the old site, opened in May 1989.
The state opted to close the old prison and build a new one as part of the Epps v Martin settlement agreement.
The town is named for Nicholas Washington Woodfin, a renowned lawyer and statesman of early North Carolina, under whom Governor Zebulon Vance clerked as an attorney. Woodfin is the only municipality bearing the name Woodfin in the United States. The town was incorporated in 1971, although the community itself dates back to at least the mid-19th century.

Hundreds in Asheville Celebrate Marriage Equality
Asheville, NC--The Campaign for Southern Equality planned a rally regardless of the decision. The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to legalize same-sex marriage in all 50-states.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Vance Monument. Rainbow flags flew high.
It is truly a beautiful sight to look around, to see your faces, said Rev. Jasmine Beech-Ferrara, Executive Director of the Campaign for Southern Equality.
63-year-old Leslie White and Dawna Wade were two of the people in the crowd. They're married.
When we came out, it was not safe, said White.
Over decades, they've lived through a massive change in the tide towards gay rights.
Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The constitution grants them that right.
That's huge. It says in a way that has never been said, I'm a person. I'm a human being. I'm legal, said Wade.
People held signs saying America is ready for the freedom to marry and Love wins.
Now it can be more out in the open. Everybody gets to love everybody however they want, said Kristen Moore.
This fight has been going on for decades and decades and decades, said Beach-Ferrara.
It was a day to remember as people snapped photos and recorded videos.
I look out today and I see people who have lost people who did not get here with us and their spirits are with us, said Beach-Ferrara.
It's a day Leslie and Dawna never thought they'd live to see.
I really didn't believe it. The last couple of years it seemed like a possibility, but five years ago? I would have laughed. My family still doesn't agree with it, said Leslie White.
Agree, or not, it is now the law.
Kennedy wrote, Two people become something greater than once they were.
The crowd sang, Love won't be denied.

UNCA Students Call for Vance Hall to be Rena
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Confederate Governor and Colonel Zebulon Vance's name is on the campus police station at UNC Asheville and students say it's time for that to change.
A group filed an online petition this week as leaders across the South debated removing the Confederate flag from license plates and state capitols.
The debate comes in the wake of the shooting deaths at a black church in Charleston.
On Tuesday, someone spray painted Black Lives Matter on the Vance Monument in downtown Asheville.
Vance owned slaves.
Amina Kone, incoming president of the Black Student Association at UNCA, said it's time for university leaders to change the name of Vance Hall.
After learning about the history of it, it does bother me, she said. It does kind of get under my skin a little bit.
Vance Hall is in Governors Village at UNCA, which has five dorms named for North Carolina governors.
Students first asked to have the name of the building changed last spring.
UNCA Chancellor Mary Grant says the issue is still being discussed.
Last spring, student leaders and the UNC Asheville board of trustees came together to discuss the issue of building naming, she said in a written statement. The names of specific buildings, including Vance Hall, were considered in the context of what those names might mean to today's students. It was a candid and thoughtful discussion and will continue to be an important conversation for the campus community in the future. UNC Asheville is committed to being an inclusive community and I'm glad our students, faculty and alumni engage these issues with passion.

Autumn Afternoon in Burnsville, North Carolina
Burnsville, North Carolina is located in Yancey County, a 40 minute ride from Asheville. The town dates back to 1833 when local resident John Yellow Jacket Bailey conveyed land to the state to become the center of the newly-designated town. Referred to at the time as the Publick Square, Burnsville Town Square remains the beautiful centerpiece of this friendly, authentic small town named in honor of Captain Otway Burns, a North Carolina hero in the War of 1812 and later a state legislator.
This video features shots of the Square, the statue of Otway Burns (placed in 1909), the majestic Nu Wray Inn, a modern hotel that started as a stagecoach stop in 1833 and is included on the National Register of Historic Places, and the shops and restaurants along Main Street.
