The Hanging of Vassil Levski / Обесването на Васил Левски
Oh you dearest Motherland, thou doth writhe in pain, it rips my heart in two
O you, my Mother, my Native Land, Why is your cry so sad and heart-rending!
And of you O Raven, foul accursed bird, for whose death doth awake thy croaking?
And you, O Raven, accursed bird, On whose grave croak you of ill impending?
Oh yes, for I know why my nations eyes weep, so constrained by life' s bondage and suffering
I know, ah I know, you weep, my Mother, Because you're a slave in bondage lying,
She bleeds the tears of a sacred heart now so lost in the echoes of silence
You weep because your sacred voice Is a helpless voice in a desert crying.
So cry, weep on, Sofia town where the scaffold gallows rope, it twitches
Weep on, weep on! Near Sofia town A ghastly gallows I have seen standing,
And you our first born who now drifts in her winds, Bulgaria's blooding wounds so gaping.
And your own son, Bulgaria, There with dreadful force is hanging.
That Raven's deep croak, cackle of wolf and dog, the darkness of sorrow so overbearing
The raven gives its grim hoarse croak, Dogs yelp, wolves howl, the sky is bleak,
The old men pray whilst women's tear drops wash, children shield the eyes of such terror
Old men in prayers their God invoke, Women shed tears, the children shriek.
The cold chill sings of the evil she brings, life somehow still continues
The winter sings its evil song, Squalls chase the thistles in the plain,
Now we are broken, our pulse is frozen, Pray, release me of this gut wrenching pain
And cold and frost and hopeless tears Wring and twist your heart with pain.
